There is some very beginning bumping and rubbing to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "Stanger believed that local history was interesting and important. He was actively involved with the San Mateo County Historical Association from its inception in 1935 serving as President of the organization from 1937 to 1941. Its aim was to "collect and preserve relics historical data and information about San Mateo County." In this he was a tireless advocate. He began collecting "stuff" even though there was no place at the time to keep it. Through his efforts the College of San Mateo made a former classroom available as a museum. This was located on Baldwin Avenue in San Mateo. From 1941 to 1964 Stanger was Director of the San Mateo County History Museum. He began a class on local history at the college and students wrote term papers often about relatives who were pioneers here. Photos and memories were collected in this way.
