ONE: Circular dispatch dated from Downing Street 30 May 1846. TWO: ‘Regulations and conditions’ Whitehall London 1846. Both items are scarce: no copy of the first and only two copies of the second on OCLC WorldCat and JISC at Manchester and Glasgow. Extracted from a volume of Parliamentary Circulars with the ownership signature "Frederick Peel" Member of Parliament from Feb. 1849 dated 1839-1851. Both are in good condition lightly aged. Disbound from a volume and paginated in manuscript. ONE: Printed ‘Circular’ headed in manuscript ‘Banking Companies’ and dated from Downing Street 30 May 1846. 1p 8vo. Paginated in manuscript 67. Thirty-two lines of small print in a copperplate font. At foot of the page not in Gladstone’s hand: ‘/sd/ Grey last word deleted W. E. Gladstone’. The document explains that the Item Two constitutes a ‘modification’ of ‘certain Regulations’ Lord John Russell had transmitted on 4 May 1840. The regulations are not forwarded as ‘inflexible rules’ but the recipient is urged ‘to procure their introduction into any Bills which may be brought into the Legislature of the Colony under your Government for the Incorporation of Banking Companies’. TWO: Printed ‘Regulations and conditions for the observance of which provision should be made in charters or legislative enactments relating to the incorporation of banking companies in the colonies’. 3pp 8vo. Bifolium. Paginated in manuscript 69-71. Dated from Downing Street London 15 January 1846. A scarce item of which no other copy has been traced. 9pp 8vo. Disbound from a volume and paginated in manuscript 57-65. Extracted from a volume of Parliamentary Circulars with the ownership signature "Frederick Peel" Member of Parliament from Feb. 1849 dated 1839-1851. In good condition lightly aged. Printed in lithograph in facsimile of a manuscript document. Begins by explaining the purpose of the dispatch in true Gladstonian style: ‘I find that the impulse which has been given in every other part of the Civilized World to plans of Railway communication has been felt in many of the British Colonies. The subject has been pressed on my attention from many different quarters and under circumstances both physical and economical as distinct and as various as are the conditions of those widely extended Settlements. To attempt to lay down any one set of rules or even a single rule binding inflexibly on the executive Governments of them all would obviously be futile and impracticable. But the experience of this Country has ascertained some general principles on the subject the application of which it may now be presumed are applicable in various degrees to the Legislation of every Country in this new field of enquiry. The object of this Despatch is to state compendiously what these rules or principles are.’ He proceeds to set out his principles under ten headings. Limited reprint edition (all copies are numbered) of 1854-1855 Berlin edition of Salzenberg's book exemplifying a growing 19th-century appreciation of Romanesque and 'Byzantine' architecture. For the original edition see Blackmer 1483; Brunet V, 103. "Salzenberg's important work remains the major source of information about the mosaics of St. Sophia". (Blackmer). 1000 copies were printed for individual persons. This copy belonged to 'Ender S. Özer Bagciman. All copies were numbered. (651/1000). The churches Salzenberg describes illustrating the development of a Christian architecture away from the secular long nave basilica or of the classical temple (never intended for congregational use), to a Greek-cross plan with a central dome, allowing greater accessibility to the altar table. Most of the text is devoted to the cathedral of the Holy Wisdom [i.e. Hagia Sophia], built-in Constantinople for Justinian I by Anthemius of Tralles and Isidore of Miletus, who dared to set a large dome over a square with the support of pendentives, achieving, with eastern and western half-domes, an uninterrupted span of over 200 feet. This building provided a model or inspiration to architects of the Middle East and Europe seeking to experiment with central, domed structures. In 1927 Walden helped train sled dogs and drivers for Admiral Richard E. Byrds Antarctic expedition and he led the dog-sled freighting of the supplies from the ships to Byrd's base camp "Little America". Walden later became the original breeder of the Chinook sled dog. In 1930 Walden considered to be one of the most respected and heralded pioneers of the Klondike and Alaskan gold rushes was presented a photographic album by Admiral Byrd that contained over 500 images of the Antarctic expedition of 1928-30. Dana Coman Dr Francis Dana Coman 1895-1952 was with Byrds first and second expeditions to Antarctica and was a personal doctor of Admiral Byrd. He later had a mountain named after him by Finn Ronne of the Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition of 1947-48. Later Printing of this northland classic no date title page dated 1928 copyright page. Introduction by Walter Collins O'Kane. Illustrated with map end pages 12 black and white photos 9 attributed to noted Pacific Northwest photographer Asahel Curtis brother of the renowned photographer Edward Curtis 3 photos unattributed. Book is Very Good two quarter-sized stains rear boards that bleed onto rear end pages but do not affect text some underlining and marginal notations in ink by Dr. Coman. Printed in New York by Daniel Ader 211 Center St. A wonderful little early guide to the city of what is now collectively Minneapolis touting the business climate and commercial opportunities quality of education future prospects etc. together with a historical sketch of the metropolis. The publisher William Wales was the first Quaker to settle in Minnesota and induced others of the sect to emigrate here. He was active in the Quaker community and was a bookseller and stationer in St. Anthony. Thomas Hale Williams also of Minneapolis was the founder of the Minneapolis Athenaeum in 1859 "which finally became part of the Minneapolis Public Library where he served twenty years as librarian treasurer and director without compensation.
