Important Revolutionary War era source records published as a supplement to Wharton's 'Digest of the International Law of the U.S.' taken from documents issued by Presidents and Secretaries of State etc. Includes 'A Brief sketch of the life of Francis Wharton by John Bassett Moore.' Francis Wharton 1820-1889 was a Philadelphia born legal writer and educator. He graduated at Yale in 1839 was admitted to the bar in 1843 became prominent in Pennsylvania politics as a Democrat serving as assistant attorney-general in 1845. In Philadelphia he edited the North American and United States Gazette. He was professor of English history and literature at Kenyon College Gambier Ohio in 1856-1863. He took orders in the Protestant Episcopal Church in 1862 and in 1863-1869 was rector of St. Paul's Church Brookline Massachusetts. In 1871-1881 he taught ecclesiastical polity and canon law in the Protestant Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge Massachusetts and at this time he lectured on the conflict of laws at Boston University. For two years he traveled in Europe and after two years in Philadelphia he went to Washington DC where he was lecturer on criminal law 1885-1886 and then professor of criminal law 1886-1888 at Columbian now George Washington University; in 1885-1888 he was solicitor or examiner of claims of the Department of State and from 1888 until his death was employed on this edition authorized by Congress of the Revolutionary Diplomatic Correspondence of the United States which superseded Jared Sparks's compilation. Although the focus of this book is on his work in Alabama four text sketch maps show his travels through North Carolina South Carolina and Georgia. Separate issue of a report included in the Eighth Annual Report of the State Mineralogist. A scarce geological survey of Mono County California containing detailed descriptions of several mining districts and tables reporting on bullion shipments and gold and silver percentages in bullion from the Bodie mines. The folding plate is titled "Vertical Cross Section through Fortuna Stopes Bodie Mine." Includes a description of the geology and topography of the count as a whole followed by sections on the Keith Jordan Mono Diggings Homer Tioga Lake Benton and Bodie mining districts. The latter receives the most attention as "the writer had the advantage of information gained in a residence of several years there" while serving as Superintendent of the Bodie Consolidated Mining Company. Each section names the mining companies working in the district and gives statistics on the amount and quality of ores extracted from different locations. unknown
