Rare Photograph of the Mining Town of Forest City California Before it was Destroyed by Fire in 1883
Undated and uncredited albumen photograph image size 4.75" x 7.75" identified in a handwritten caption on the mount as Forest City a town in Sierra County California where gold was discovered in 1852. Slight fading and spotting crack in the glass negative appearing in lower left but still a clear image of the town; very good overall. By 1854 the town boasted a population of about 1000 and was home to five hotels a school a restaurant two stables two meat markets six carpentry shops four blacksmiths four clothing stores several general stores and of course many saloons. A telegraph line reached the town in 1855. Forest City suffered several devastating fires over the years with the worst one occurring in 1883. Although efforts were made to rebuild most of the mines had dried up and the town's population began a steady decline. Today it is a ghost town. Report Card from Big Creek School in Fort Bend County Texas 1913-1914: Rare Ephemera from a Settlement Long Gone from the Map if it was ever on one
Richmond Texas: Coaster Print 1914. Ephemera. Good. No Binding. Old report card from a school in Fort Bend County Texas for a 3rd grade student Russell Brumbelow. The School is named Big Creek but we cannot find any mention of this school in county histories or on the Internet and only a few references to Big Creek the community. Big Creek the waterway starts south of Rosenberg and runs some 25 miles southeast to the Brazos River. The school was likely in that part of the county perhaps in the Fairchilds area. Edward Risinger is listed as Superintendent. Coaster Print in Richmond Texas printed the report card. Big Creek the community did exist as evidenced by the existence of a post office as early as 1846 and record of its discontinuance in 1867. This report card offers evidence that the settlement was still recognized by 1914. Oil was discovered at Big Creek in 1922. Finding an old map with Big Creek on it has been difficult none yet. The folded report card measures 3 3/4 X 6 1/4 inches. Well-preserved though browned with age it offers advice to parents instructions to teachers and a few inspirational quotes. The student was graded in the subjects of Reading Spelling Writing Arithmetic Grammar and Geography. He did quite well!. Coaster Print unknown

Report of the Case of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania versus John Smith Esq. Marshal of the United States for the District of Pennsylvania . . . by a member of the Bar of Philadelphia
Philadelphia Pa: David Hogan 1809. Paperback. Very Good -. Title page continued: "Containing The Speeches of the Attorney General and Jared Ingersoll Esq. on behalf of the Commonwealth and William Lewis Esq. on the part of the Defendant. And also the opinion of the Honorable William Tilghman Esq. Chief Justice of the State of Pennsylvania." iv 1 6-52 p.; 21 cm. Printed by T.T. Stiles. Disbound from a nonce volume. Early American Imprints 2nd series Shaw & Shoemaker 18494. This report is part of a lengthy and complicated matter involving a Revolutionary War privateer Gideon Olmstead who fought for over three decades for a larger share of a British ship taken during the war and Elizabeth Sergeant & Esther Waters the daughters and heirs of David Rittenhouse Pennsylvania's treasurer during the Revolution. Rittenhouse had been charged with protecting the prize money until the matter was resolved. However even after federal courts ruled in favor of Olmstead Pennsylvania refused to relinquish its claim to the money. In 1809 the United States Supreme Court in U.S. v. Peters 9 U.S. 5 Cranch 115 1809 in a nationalistic Marshall Court decision made it the first case to strike down a state statute. In response Gov. Snyder ordered the militia "to protect the daughters of Rittenhouse" who lived in adjoining houses at Arch and 7th Streets which they did for five weeks in March and April 1809. When the U.S. Marshal John Smith tried to serve the writ he was stopped by crossed bayonets. After he entered Sergeant's house through a rear window and arrested her Gov. Snyder finally paid the sum to the marshal striking a blow to the doctrine of state supremacy. This report relates to the unsuccessful attempt to force the marshall to release Elizabeth Sergeant Pennsylvania Chief Justice William Tilghman ruling that although he thought he had the power to discharge them if the federal court did not have jurisdiction he determined that in this case the federal court did have jurisdiction and so she should remain in custody of the U.S. marshall. A very scarce early 19th-century American legal report. In Very Good- Condition: disbound; scattered foxing and soiling first several leaves are the most heavily foxed; trimmed too closely at the foot of p. 39 with slight loss of text; old dampstain along upper edge of some leaves.
