The book and its contents are in mostly clean bright condition. The spine ends of the book covers have some light bumping and rubbing. The dust jacket has several edge tears nicks and rubbed spots to the spine ends of the book cover along with some light rubbing to the spine joints. "Horgan first came to prominence when he won the Harper Prize in 1933 for The Fault of Angels one of his books not set in the Southwest but drawn instead from his experiences in Rochester. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1947. He twice won the Pulitzer Prize for History first in 1955 with Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History Wesleyan University Press also Bancroft Prize for History and then once again in 1976 with Lamy of Santa Fe Wesleyan University Press. Both these books broke new ground in New Mexican history. Great River is considered a classic in the historical literature of the American southwest. Accompanied by a Typed Letter Signed from him 1p 5�" X 8�" Kingston RI 1960 February 23. Addressed to Arnold Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Fine. "I am sending you my address on Lincoln at the request of Charles O'Neill" writes Horn. ".He is particularly interested in the paragraph at the bottom of page 3. I am hoping that the Rhode Island legislature will take action on my suggestion." Which consists of: "Lincoln's two addresses in Rhode Island are of such significance in our history that I hope the State will both commemorate the occasions with some ceremony on the centennial anniversary and mark with a suitable plaque or monument the places where these historic addresses were delivered." Signed boldly in full in black ink. Horn 1908-99 was an educator who served as president of this university from 1958 to 1967 and spearheaded many advancements for that institution. Charles O'Neill 1910-97 was an author known in Civil War circles for his "Wild Train: The Story of the Andrews' Raiders." A most unusual and interesting pair. University of Rhode Island unknown

Under the portrait Horn is described as "packer scout interpreter Chief of Scouts prospector rodeo champion deputy sheriff hired gun Pinkerton agent cattle detective murderer." In 1886 while serving as Chief of Army Scouts Horn played a major role in locating and forcing the surrender of Geronimo and his band of hostile Apache Indians. He wrote these memoirs while awaiting execution for the murder of the young son of a Wyoming rancher.
