Broadside trimmed 10-1/4 by 9 inches mounted on a larger sheet of paper. $2500.Dramatic printed broadside from the English Civil War ordering the burning of an ""impious and blasphemous book.""This broadside calls for the arrest imprisonment and then exile of author Laurence Clarkson and the seizure of his book The Single Eye which earned the censure of the government. The document reads in part: ""Upon report from the Committee for suppressing licentious and impious practices under pretence of Religion Liberty &c. The Confession of Laurence Clarkson touching the making and publishing of the impious and blasphemous book called The Single Eye� the said Laurence Clarkson is to be forthwith sent to the House of Correction there to be kept to labor for one Moneth and from that time to be Banished out of this Commonwealth and the Territories thereof and not to return upon pain of Death� the book called The Single Eye and all printed copies thereof are to be forthwith seized and burnt by the hand of the Common Hangman in the New-Palace at Westminster and upon the Exchange; and that the Lord Major and Sheriffs of London and Middlesex be required to cause the same to be done accordingly."" Those in possession of the book are also ""required and enjoined forthwith to deliver the same to the next Justice of the Peace� who are hereby required to cause the same to be publiquely burned."" Another man named in this broadside Mr. Rainborow is stripped of his duties as a Justice of the Peace in Middlesex County and forbidden from returning to that position anywhere in England or Wales. Edinburgh: printed by Sir D. Hunter Blair & J. Bruce 1803. Disbound from stab-sewn binding some browning marginal paper repair to first leaf but overall sound condition. Folio pp. 1-14 disbound. One of the most important amendments to the laws of Transportation formalising the requirement for convict vessels to carry a Surgeon and thus directly responsible for a huge improvement in mortality rates. The Act is also interesting for noting some of the abuses rampant aboard convict transports and other passenger vessels travelling from Britain. The First Fleet had been provisioned by the Admiralty itself and the Surgeons on board led by John White had an excellent record. From the Second Fleet onwards the task was contracted to private companies infamously derelict on the Second Fleet itself and with wildly varying results over the ensuing decade. On several occasions officers colluded to deny the convicts their correct rations so the surplus could be sold upon arrival at Port Jackson for a handsome profit. A plan to return convicts to naval vessels was scuppered by the ongoing conflict with France. This Act regulated the terms of carrying all passengers free or convict detailing acceptable provisioning and the role of the Surgeon and allowing for a bond of £50 per head to be paid by the owners of any vessel. Although abuses continued aboard the convict transports conditions did improve overall and the casualty rate for convicts sent to New South Wales fell from one in ten between 1795 and 1801 to one in forty-six for the period 1802-1812. One curious result was that British conservatives started to criticise the transports as being too comfortable and therefore a poor deterrent to crime. printed by Sir D. Hunter Blair & J. Foundation Act of the Australian Agricultural Company a fabulously lucrative investment scheme that followed a formal meeting at the chambers of John Macarthur in Lincoln's Inn during April 1824. In principle the Company derived from a simple conundrum; the Australian colonies abounded in unutilised land and convict labour but lacked a corporate structure to attract investment capital. Accordingly in return for raising one million pounds in capital the company was awarded a land grant by the New South Wales government of one million acres. The Company was formed and incorporated by this Act of Parliament and a Royal Charter issued on the first day of November 1824. This Act comprises a pivotal document in the early economic history of Australia. Once established the Australian Agricultural Company opened up vast areas of wilderness for grazing and agriculture and provided the impetus for much of the inland exploration of New South Wales for the following two decades. Following the recommendation of Commissioner Bigge the Company was based on a Mediterranean production model of wool grapes olives flax and similar crops suited to the southern climate. The Van Diemen's Land Company was founded along similar lines to the Australian Agricultural Company - vast areas and surplus convict labour could be brought to profitable advantage with a Company to attract investors into the fold. The Company was offered vast tracts of land beyond existing settled areas and opened up lands previously unseen by European eyes. This Act follows the decision of April 1825 by the Colonial Office to offer the Company some 250000 acres in the remote northwest of Tasmania for a peppercorn rent. It details the organisation of the company share offers transfers and the like and comprises an important document in the early economic history of the colony. The Van Diemen's Land Company was plagued by poor management practices and charges of favouritism from the Colonial Office. Settlers resented expectation that convict labour be granted to the Company so denying them of much needed labour. Investors lost considerably in the Company until the Victorian gold-rush of the mid 1850's created a market for potatoes grain and timber and revitalised the fortunes of the venture. Collection of 17 reports concerning the Maori Wars Land Settlements and the Administration of Sir George Grey
Auckland: Government printer 1861 1865. Very good condition. Foolscap folio some tables and a coloured folding map occasional foxing and browning occasional contemporary notes and marginalia in ink; bound in later quarter polished calf with labels. An engaging collection of 17 official reports and papers dating from Sir George Grey's second term as Governor of New Zealand a formative period for European-Maori relations in New Zealand's history. Grey had been recalled after a controversial tenure as governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner of South Africa. An able self-promoter Grey had offered to return in the hope that his rapport with the Maori would enable him to quell the emerging troubles and took little time in maligning the efforts of his predecessor Thomas Gore Brown. Grey was an able negotiator but his intentions were suspected both by the Maori and the British commander Lieutenant-General Duncan Cameron who acted with great caution following his efforts to defeat the Maori in southern Taranaki. Cameron whose report On the Native Insurrection is included here suspected Grey and the government of trying to use the British Army to acquire Maori land. On one occasion at Weraroa Grey took to the field himself and with a small force of colonial troops and 'friendly' Maori captured a native supply depot which the Maori promptly evacuated. This was hailed not least by Grey as a famous victory. The papers collected here begin with the Auckland printed Native Addresses of Welcome continuing with Reports on the state of Maori relations and finish with Wellington published Papers on The supply of ammunition to rebel natives and Murder of the Rev. Carl Sylvius Volkner by the Hau Hau Fanatics with page references of the Maori-translated passages in an early hand. Of special interest is the folding coloured map showing the proposed system of roads and settlements for military defence of the North Island included as an integral part of the report titled Memorandum on Roads and Military Settlements in the Northern Island 1863.
