Francis Horner Scottish Whig politician journalist and political economist; Slave Trade Autograph Letter Signed to ‘Harrison’ regarding ‘Stephen’s book’ a pardon for thieves the Attorney General ‘Thorpe’ and the General Assembly.
1 April 1815. Taunton Somerset. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. At the time of writing a year and a half before his death Horner was Member of Parliament for St. Mawes in Cornwall. 1p 4to. Eighteen lines neatly written. Addressed to ‘My dear Harrison’ and signed ‘Fra Horner.’ In good condition lightly aged with negligible remnants of windowpane mount adhering at edges of blank reverse. Folded for postage. He has received both of Harrison’s letters and is ‘particularly obliged’ to him for ‘sending the copy of Stephen’s communication. The omission is much to be expected to which the escape of the convicted slave-dealers is owing; but it is very important that we should be if possible by an official communication of the opinion of the Attorney General to state to the Subscribers the real grounds of the pardon granted against these men. When it is properly explained the matter throws new disgrace upon Thorpe.’ He has not seen the third edition of Thorpe’s book ‘nor the notice with which he has there honored me’ and he begins to feel ‘very anxious about the report to be made to the General Assembly’. He ends with details of his return to London. Note: He is referring presumably to the trials of the Slave Traders Samuel Samo Joseph Peters and William Tufft slave traders and "A letter to William Wilberforce Esq. M.P. vice president of the African Institution : containing remarks on the reports of the Sierra Leone Company and African Institution" pubd 1815Slave Trade 1 April 1815. Taunton [Somerset]. unknown

GEORGE II (Parliament)
A Bill for preventing Frauds committed by Bankrupts and by the Executor and Administrators of Traders dying Insolvent and for the Relief of the Creditors of Traders becoming Insolvent.
London: William Bowyer 1731. First edition. A rare surviving example of this Bill in its original form with a docket title. Although no printer details are given ESTC states that this bill was printed by William Bowyer and from his records that only 1500 copies were printed and that most of the sheets were later 'overrun' i.e. reimposed and reprinted. The legislation was not passed on this occasion but was enacted in the next session as 5 Geo.II.c.30. It is interesting to see the original bill printed up but with gaps for dates and other details throughout the legislation. 311p. Without any binding or boards as issued. sewn to spine. Possibly abstracted from a larger volume. 33cm x 20cm. ESTC: T80404. .
No place: no printer identified 1783. Pro bono work First and apparently only edition of this speech promoting the establishment in Toulouse of an order of lawyers offering free legal representation to the poor a "league of generous defenders of the oppressed and destitute". When Maître Gez c.1700-1792 gave this speech to his peers at the Parlement in Toulouse he had already constituted a group of thirty-two lawyers providing free counsel to the poor. The group was divided into two chambers according to seniority and met monthly. Appealing to the generosity of his peers to form a society of men dedicated to the pursuit of justice and set free from the "domination of greed" Gez cites as models to follow Montesquieu Beccaria and Servan as well as the Bareau of the city of Nancy which had already implemented a similar system. Jean Nicolas Joseph Abraham Gez had a long career at the Bar and was made a member of the Académie des Sciences Inscriptions et Belles Lettres de Toulouse in 1785. Quarto 238 x 190 mm 21 pp. Engraved vignette at head of first leaf. Disbound and stab sewn through the original stab holes. Small marginal stain to first leaf top corner with small stain; a very good copy. unknown
