Sm. folio 3 leaves BLACK-LETTER throughout with fine woodblock arms of William III on front cover and woodblock illuminated capital on first page of text; disbound uncut a remarkably crisp clean copy. 8 Gulielmi III.The death of Queen Mary in 1695 isolated William as an object of Jacobite hatred; the motive for his assassination being the stronger since his death would no longer leave her in occupation of the throne. In February James II moved to Calais and the Jacobite conspirators moved to action. As William drove home to Kensington Palace from his weekly outing in Richmond Park he had to pass along a narrow and muddy lane near Turnham Green. Here he was to be surrounded and murdered. This was the most serious of the several plots against him but the plotters' security was lax and on 24 February William announced in parliament knowledge both of the plan and of the proposed invasion from France. This act arraigns Sir George Barclay and a number of lesser Jacobites including Johnson alias Harrison Durant alias Durance Michael Hare Major George Holmes Philip Hanford alias Browne Richard Richardson John Maxwell Bryerly Plowden and Hungate.Conspirators already languishing in Newgate are named as Counter Major John Bernardi Robert Cassells Robert Meldrum James Chambers and Robert Blackbourne. ‎James Ewing (1784-1853) of Strathleven House, Dumbartonshire, Member of Parliament for Wareham, 1830-1831, and Glasgow, 1832-183‎

‎Glasgow Electors;James Ewing of Strathleven House Autograph Letter Signed to his sister Mrs Elizabeth Hyde of Bath expressing relief on his removal from Parliament. On printed address 'To the Electors of Glasgow' after losing election‎

‎Letter dated 'Glasgow February 9 1835'. Address by 'BELL AND BAIN PRINTERS Glasgow' and dated 'QUEEN-STREET January 15th 1835.'. Letter and address are on a foolscap 8vo bifolium with the address covering the first three pages and the letter the reverse of the second leaf which also carries the address 'Mrs Hyde 31 Henrietta Street Bath' forwarded to Kew and then 10 New Street Margate with ten postmarks and a red wax seal. In fair condition on aged and worn paper with a few nicks and short closed tears along folds. LETTER: 1p. foolscap 8vo. Addressed to 'My dear Elizabeth'. Of most interest is the concluding passage which reads: 'No man I assure you can feel less disappointment at not returning to the slavery of Parliament - On the contrary I feel the pleasures of emancipation. Not so many of my friends - and among the rest poor Deans who is nowhere and almost greeting.' The rest of the letter concerns Mrs Hyde's residence with Ewing writing that she has 'made a very cheap and from what you say a very proper change to Bath. At another season however I should have recommended Malvern. I should doubt the propriety of your letting Kew - you have given a good reason against it.' He suggests that she make 'an arrangement for getting quit of the Lease' and returns to Scotland. He has made a 'fair offer' for <Ardinterry>. ADDRESS: 3pp. foolscap 8vo in small type. The first page carries a letter from Ewing dated 'QUEEN-STREET' January 15th 1835' and signed in type 'JA. EWING.' The letter begins: 'GENTLEMEN WHEN I offered to you a renewal of my services I stood on great public principles. I declared that while I was anxious to improve - I was determined to preserve the existing institutions of the Country; that till the Reform Act had received a full experiment I would consent to no theoretic changes; that I was inviolably attached to the British Constitution and resolved to protect the rights of the Commons the privileges of the Peers and the prerogative of the Crown; and that in consistency with these views and the independent grounds on which I first had the honour to be returned I would give a fair hearing to the Ministers appointed by the King before I could condemn their measures.' It concludes: 'Gentlemen I now retire into the shade of private life. To the diversified interests of this great City I have ever afforded all the aid in my humble power - and I have now ended my public career in the last struggle to maintain its independence. All my aspirations will still be for the fulfilment of the motto to your arms "Let Glasgow flourish!" One word more with regard to my Country. In the aspect of the political horizon it is impossible not to perceive the small cloud which indicates a coming storm. I can no longer act as one of the conductors endeavouring to withdraw the lightning; but my last prayer shall be that the stroke may never descend on the venerable and beautiful fabric of the Constitution.' The other two pages are headed 'SENTIMENTS OF THE BRITISH PRESS' and carry fourteen extracts from newspapers ranging from the Glasgow Herald to the Dumfries and Galloway Courier. The final printed item at the foot of the last page is a 'STATEMENT OF THE POLL' with Ewing beaten into third place by Oswald and Dunlop. No copy of this document has been found on either COPAC or WorldCat although Glasgow has another address to the electors of Glasgow this one from 1834 not 1835 as above. Letter dated 'Glasgow February 9, 1835'. Address by 'BELL AND BAIN, PRINTERS [Glasgow]', and dated 'QUEEN-STREET, January 15th, unknown‎

‎GLORIOUS REVOLUTION / ABDICATION OF JAMES II. The debate at large between the House of Lords and House of Commons . anno 1688‎

‎London: Printed for J. Wickins; and to be sold by the Booksellers of London and Westminster 1695. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo. COLLATION: A-B4 C-F8 G-Q4 COMPLETE. 2 19-176 pp. Attractive half calf antique marbled boards red morocco label gilt compartments gilt with small tools. ¶ FIRST EDITION of this important collection of Parliamentary debates providing original and valuable documentation of the constitutional crisis that ensued during the Glorious Revolution of 1688. James II of England a.k.a. James VII of Scotland while fleeing to France dropped the Great Seal of the Realm into the Thames. In Parliament the question was discussed whether he had forfeited the throne or had abdicated. The present volume offers detailed arguments for the both but ultimately the latter designation was agreed upon and in a full assembly of the Lords and Commons it was resolved in spite of James's protest "that King James II having endeavored to subvert the constitution of the kingdom by breaking the original contract between king and people and by the advice of Jesuits and other wicked persons having violated the fundamental laws and having withdrawn himself out of this kingdom has abdicated the government and that the throne is thereby vacant." The Scottish parliament pronounced a decree of forfeiture and deposition. ¶ In our copy the imprint reads "and to be sold" in another issue the imprint reads "and sold". ¶ References: Wing 2nd ed. Provenance: the Sunderland copy sale of the Bibliotheca Sunderlandiana Puttick & Simpson 1882 Fourth Portion lot 9338 -- subsequently in the Theological Institute of Connecticut now known as the Hartford Seminary with blindstamps. NB: in 1976 a collection of more than 200000 books from the Hartford Seminary Library were sold to Emory University including this one --> deaccessioned from Pitts Theology Library. Printed for J. ‎Jean-Charles d'Augeard (1725-ap.1777), président à mortier au Parlement de Bordeaux, conseiller du roi. L.A.S., Poitiers, 14 mars 1777, 1p in-4. [215]‎

‎John Elliot Burns [John Burns] (1858-1943), Independent Labour Party Member of Parliament for Battersea:‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed 'John Burns' to an unnamed male correspondent the M.P. J. W. Logan.‎

‎28 August 1893; on parliamentary letterhead. 8vo: 1 p. 14 lines of text. On aged and spotted paper laid down on a piece of card and with the head of the letter not affecting the text but causing the loss of the top half of the letterhead worn away. Originally a 2-page 12mo bifolium but with the text from the second page laid down below the first. The subject of the letter appears to be the simmering controversy surrounding a 'Fracas' or 'Scene in the House' reported in The Times throughout August 1893 being an altercation involving the two Members of Parliament Logan and Hayes-Fisher both of whom claimed to be the injured party. Burns reproduces a letter which he says he is sending to the press 'in reply to one you send me but which I found subsequently you had published'. He refers to a statement 'attributed to me and referred to by you' which he says is 'due to a misapprehension of some chaffing remarks of mine in the Lobby of Friday last. I regret to say that I did not see you shaken like a dog and I am sorry to say that I did not witness the pulling of your ear'. 28 August 1893; on parliamentary letterhead. unknown‎

‎On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square Hyde Park W. London 4 February 1876. 4pp. 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition lightly worn and aged with minor trace of mount on second leaf. Waddy's letter 'fortifies' his own opinions and he would 'certainly not neglect a new opportunity for Grantham which is manifestly attended with real uncertainty owing to the local influence of the Custs'. He feels that rather than being 'given up' Grantham should be 'seriously attended to'. He next endorses the North-Eastern circuit: 'each place is good! - There will be always more causes at Leeds than at al the Mid circuit places including additions & as long as there is a strong Bar business will come there - on the Midland the tendency will be to London & looking to the future I am all for NE Circuit. or all for London & Westminster'. Changing the subject he writes: 'Slave circular requires care in dealing with it In point of abstract law I may be right it was foolish to bring the captains duty to a fast line. Hitherto it has always worked in favour of the Slave - He has always some how escaped & the Captain has always contrived so to manage that he should - Complaints may have arisen but what if sic that compared with the fact of escape somehow!' Waddy 'may have to speak' and should turn over 'the above hint' in his mind.' He is well but his brothers 'have ordered me not to come out'. Note: a response to the "Slave Circular" fugitive slaves discussed in Parliament in this year. On letterhead of 16 Sussex Square, Hyde Park, W. [London] 4 February 1876. unknown‎

He urges Spencer to 'get him to deliver a course of Lectures on Painting at the Surrey Institution. From speeches which I have heard him deliver I should think his language & delivery well calculated for the purpose & likely to render him popular.' He explains that he is prevented from writing himself by a 'complaint in my eyes'. Butterworth had strong connections with the Surrey Institution through his brother-in-law Adam Clarke 1762-1832 the first Librarian. Bedford Square [ London ]. 19 October 1830. unknown‎
