Five acts lacking separate titles but complete appears to be two extra tittle pages a few tears and corner folds one act with margin tear not affecting text minor some soiling; otherwise very good. This is an interesting collection of Parliamentary Acts relating to America during the reign of George III. While most of the acts are from the colonial period there is also some Revolutionary War material. There are several acts concerning the importation of rice from South Carolina and Georgia and others that relate to importation of wheat beaver skins and tea into the colonies. Others address the quartering of troops in the colonies as well as better pay for soldiers and dealing with mutiny and desertion. Additionally several acts refer to a continuation of the right of the king to secure and detain people charged with or suspected of "high treason" and for the exchange of American prisoners brought to Great Britain. The lengthiest act relating to the raising of money makes several specific references to colonial Georgia including the provisioning of the garrisons commissioning of troops of Highland Rangers with schooners and granting money to the trustees of Georgia for the improvement of the colony. Another act provides for a speedy trial for those who commit treason against the king. Collection of 89 Acts of Parliament Passed During the Reigns of George II and George III.
Bound volume of 89 acts folio 11 3/4" x 7" period full calf 446 pp. Various paginations actual page count is done by hand and a manuscript index at the front lists the acts and indicates the page it is on. Binding is worn backstrip is gone hinges are cracked covers almost detached and some signatures are loose some early ink notations and page numbering are on top of pages it appears there are some remnants of wax seals on the margin of the last page some soiling at endpapers normal aging and browning but internally pretty clean; despite the mentioned flaws the contents are in very good shape but the binding needs work. While this collection of Acts passed under George II and George III is not sequential a previous owner has provided a useful index as to the contents and location of various acts. The laws cover a very broad area of issues from the more mundane such as dog stealing punishments for disorderly houses and preventing abuses in making bricks and tiles to more important issues including the raising and training of the militia regulating the price of corn preservation of public highways and the punishment for selling ale and apiarist without a license. Other important acts include regulating places of entertainment regulating the trials of controverted elections establishing trade agreements in the East Indies changing some of the rules passed by Queen Elizabeth on providing relief to the poor and wildlife preservation. Suppression of the Slave Trade Parliamentary Acts 1828-1838
1828. Slavery & Abolition This archive contains two British parliamentary acts addressing the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade. Both published in London by George Eyre and Andrew Spottiswoode. The first document "An Act to Continue an Act for Amending and Consolidating the Laws Relating to the Abolition of the Slave Trade" 25th July 1828 was issued under the reign of King George IV. It reinforces prior legislative measures aimed at abolishing the slave trade within the British Empire and its territories ensuring penalties for violations and the removal of enslaved individuals from illegally operating vessels. The second document "An Act to Revive and Continue Until Six Months After the Commencement of the Next Session of Parliament and to Amend an Act for Authorizing Her Majesty to Carry into Immediate Execution by Orders in Council Any Treaties Made for the Suppression of the Slave Trade" 14th August 1838 was enacted under Queen Victoria. This act sought to extend and strengthen Britain's ability to enforce anti-slavery treaties with foreign nations allowing for immediate action against those engaging in the slave trade. Both pieces are significant records of Britain's legal efforts to combat slavery in the early 19th century and underscore the ongoing legislative process that led to the full abolition of slavery across the British Empire in 1833. THE 1780 RESTORATION OF TRADE ACT "An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; . .

"An Act to allow the exportation of provisions goods wares and merchandize from Great Britain to certain towns ports or places in North America which are or may be under the protection of His Majesty's arms; and from such towns ports or places to Great Britain and other parts of His Majesty's dominions." The effect of this act was to amend the American Prohibitory Act of 1776 to to allow the resumption of trade betwenn Britain and those parts of the American colonies that remained under British control. The Prohibitory Act had been the final straw that led to the American Revoltion but if Parliament thought the 1780 revisions would reverse British fortunes in the colonies they would be disappointed: The Restoration of Trade Act was too little and too late. Paper is very brittle. 4 leaves; the signature mark not present on the first leaf but page 5 is signed C; thus possibly part of a larger work. This prints the Lords Protests to the Duke of Marlborough's bill regarding the commissions of military officers and then prints the bill itself. Following are section relating to the election of Peers in Scotland some wording in an act relating to plantations in America a lengthy section on West India Trade and a discussion of the discretionary powers of the Crown and Ministers. The final sections are dated 26 and 29 Martii 1734 as the year was still being reckoned using the old system and so changed on March 25. Proceedings in the House of Commons regarding the impeachment of the Earl of Portland the Earl of Orford Lord Somers and Lord Halifax in March-April 1701. The Earl of Portland was one of the main negotiators of the Second Partition Treaty which sought to stave off what became the War of Spanish Succession. The treaty was wildly unpopular in England and after its signing discontent among the public and in the House of Commons led to impeachment proceedings against Portland along with Orford Somers and Halifax who were said to be cognizant of the negotiations. Title continues: 'As Exhibited In His Parliamentary And Legal Speeches, And Miscellaneous Writings.' Henry Peter Brougham (1778-1868), 1st Baron Brougham and Vaux, was a British statesman who became Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. Brougham helped to found the Edinburgh Review in 1802 and contributed many articles to it. He was called to the bar in 1808. In 1810 he entered the House of Commons as a Whig. Brougham took up the fight against the slave trade and opposed restrictions on trade with continental Europe. In 1820, he won popular renown as chief attorney to Queen Caroline, and in the next decade he became a liberal leader in the House. He not only proposed educational reforms in Parliament but also was one of the founders of the Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge in 1825 and of University College London in 1826. As Lord Chancellor from 1830 to 1834 he effected many legal reforms to speed procedure and established the Central Criminal Court. Price clipped dust jacket not marked or torn with creasing to upper and lower rear edges. 336pp. James Maxton was Britain's most charismatic socialist politician of the inter-war years and the best-known platform orator of his time. He was MP for Bridgetown in Glasgow from 1922 until his death in 1946. Gordon Brown's biography examines the shaping of Maxton's political career from Conservative student to socialist teacher in Glasgow, and eventually on to leadership of the Independant Labour Party.
