Il y justifie la cruauté réfléchie des tyrans Tibère, Néron et Domitien, en observant que leur tyrannie coûta moins de vies humaines quune bataille glorieuse. Louvrage obtint un succès de scandale. Il était difficile, dit Jacob Kole in Biogr. Univers., de renfermer plus dérudition et de vraies connaissances dans un plus court espace. Le style en est élégant et pur, mais trop épigrammatique. Le livre est dédié au roi Stanislas. Suit un avertissement qui commence ainsi : Jentre dans la carrière des Lettres, et je nai que 25 ans. Ce nest point par vanité que je lannonce. ‎Une importante synthèse historique commanditée par Madame Adélaïde. Les 18 premiers volumes de cette Histoire universelle ont été rédigés par Jacques Hardion et les 2 derniers par Simon Linguet. Elle fut réalisée à la demande de Madame Adélaïde de France, dédicataire de l'ouvrage, qui souhaitait disposer d'un travail lui permettant facilement de se remémorer les faits historiques: “Une Histoire universelle qui n'eut ni la sécheresse ordinaire des Abrégés, ni l'étendue des Histoires particulières. Il fallait rassembler en un corps ce que l'Histoire offre de plus mémorable, de plus utile et de plus intéressant ; faire connaître les caractères des personnages qui ont joué sur les différents théâtres les rôles principaux; mettre les lecteurs en état de se faire à eux-mêmes des leçons de morale et de politique, d'après les tableaux qu'ils auraient sous leurs yeux; enfin composer un tout dont les parties fussent liées entre elles sans embarras et sans confusion” (préface). Sont ainsi évoqués les grands moments de l'Histoire depuis la création du monde jusqu'au XVIe siècle. Les 14 premiers volumes ont été imprimés par Guillaume Desprez et les 6 derniers par Louis Cellot. Chacun est suivi d'une abondante table des matières. La vignette de titre des 18 premiers volumes et le bandeau du premier feuillet de dédicace sont aux armes de Marie Adélaïde de France, dite “Madame Adélaïde” (Versailles 1732-Trieste 1800). Intelligente et très cultivée, la quatrième fille et la sixième des enfants de Louis XV et de Marie Lecszynska. fut aussi une mélomane raffinée. Elle défendit avec ardeur l'ordre des Jésuites et dénonça Voltaire auprès de Louis XV qui le fit éloigner de la Cour. Sa bibliothèque comptait plus de 10000 volumes qui furent vendus aux enchères pendant la Révolution. Jacques Hardion (Tours 1686-Versailles 1766), membre de l'Académie des inscriptions et Belles-lettres (1728) et de l'Académie française (1730), était le bibliothécaire du roi et de la famille royale à Versailles. Il traduisit Théocrite et Anacréon et fut l'auteur d'essais sur la littérature grecque. Très bel exemplaire en maroquin de l'époque. Manques au dos, le papier a uniformément bruni, sinon bon état général. Exemplaire bien complet du frontispice gravé d'après Spilfourg, avec la sentence "Soyez libres : vivez" dans la planche.‎

‎Édition originale de ce pamphlet contre la Bastille. Publiciste révolté, Linguet s'attaquait dans des pamphlets ou dans son journal Annales politiques civiles et littéraires, aux Philosophes, à l'Académie, et même au pain de blé qui « tient trop de place dans l'alimentation des français ». Ces récriminations et ces mises en cause hardies le conduisirent à la Bastille en 1780 à la suite d'une lettre de cachet. Il y resta près de deux ans. Quand il en sortit, il en jura la perte, et écrivit « ces fameux Mémoires sur la Bastille, qui ont été comme un premier coup de pioche, et qui font de Linguet le véritable démolisseur de cette prison d'état » (Monselet). Effectivement la Bastille tomba précisément le jour de son 53ème anniversaire. Linguet était né le 14 juillet ( ! ) 1736 à Reims. Il fut guillotiné à Paris, le 27 juin 1794. Curieux frontispice, représentant la statue de Louis XVI tendant les mains vers les prisonniers qu'il vient de libérer, à l'emplacement de la Bastille en ruines.
