Estes ornamentos xilogravados que adornam a obra contêm várias vezes o trigrama sagrado IHS geralmente usado pela Companhia de Jesus nomeadamente ao início dos índices e nas elaboradas gravuras que se encontram ao início dos tratados com exceção do primeiro.</p>_x000d_<p>Texto em caracteres redondos e alguns itálicos enquadrado por uma moldura composta por dois filetes simples. Encontra-se disposto em duas colunas com exceção dos textos preliminares nas páginas em numeração romana. Os títulos correntes a paginação e as notas impressas à margem estão colocadas no interior da moldura entre os filetes.</p>_x000d_<p>Exemplar com ex-libris de Francisco da Gama Caeiro com o mote <em>Fideliter non serviliter</em> Fielmente não servilmente na pasta anterior e etiqueta com cota 3.373 na guarda anterior. Pequenas falhas de pele na lombada e desgaste superficial da encadernação. Leves manchas de humidade mais notáveis entre as páginas 1-50 e nas últimas páginas numeradas. Apresenta picos de traça a partir da página 229 a maior parte sem atingir a mancha tipográfica mas com alguns afetando por vezes as notas marginais e a dita moldura sem nunca impedir a leitura. Muito raro e ainda mais no comércio já que não aparece em nenhum dos principais catálogos de leilões e livreiros.</p>_x000d_<p>Obra muito importante que compreende uma vasta compilação de conhecimentos filosóficos que cobrem uma ampla gama de áreas do conhecimento desde a filosofia natural até a ética. Trata-se de uma referência essencial para o estudo da filosofia escolástica e das ciências naturais do início do século XVII em Portugal e em todo o mundo católico onde existiam colégios jesuítas. Os temas abordados incluem os princípios da natureza a matéria e a forma e as propriedades essenciais dos <em>corpos naturais</em>. Relaciona-se com a «Metafísica» e a «Física» de Aristóteles.</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Secundus: De caelo et mundo. </em>Focado no estudo do céu e do mundo este tratado explora a estrutura do universo e os corpos celestes. Discute o conceito de esferas celestes os movimentos dos planetas e a cosmologia aristotélica. Baseia-se na «De Caelo» Sobre o Céu de Aristóteles explorando a substância movimento e partes do céu.</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Tertius: De rerum naturalium ortu & interitu. </em>Este tratado aborda a origem e a destruição das<em> coisas naturais</em>. Investiga os processos de formação de um corpo a partir de outro a natureza das mudanças e transformações que ocorrem nas <em>coisas </em>e as causas subjacentes a esses fenómenos. Relaciona-se intimamente com a «De Generatione et Corruptione» Sobre a Geração e Corrupção.</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Quartus: De Meteoris. </em>Focado nos fenómenos atmosféricos este tratado explora a natureza e as causas dos meteoros. Discute fenómenos como chuva vento trovões relâmpagos e outros eventos atmosféricos seguindo a tradição aristotélica de estudo dos meteoros que se encontra na «Meteorologica».</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Quintus: De Anima. </em>Este tratado investiga a natureza dos <em>corpos animados</em>: seres vivos que têm uma alma anima que guia as suas operações vitais. Explora a definição de alma; a distinção entre plantas alma vegetativa animais alma sensitiva e humanos alma racional; e examina também a relação entre a alma e o corpo e as operações específicas da alma racional. A investigação sobre a alma e as suas faculdades segue de perto as ideias apresentadas por Aristóteles na obra homónima «De Anima».</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Sextus: De Parvis naturalibus. </em>Aborda os chamados «Parva Naturalia» Pequenos Tratados sobre a Natureza: uma coleção de textos escritos por Aristóteles sobre aspectos específicos da fisiologia humana como os sentidos o sono os sonhos a memória e outras funções que ligam a alma ao corpo.</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Septimus: De Anima separata. </em>Este tratado foca-se no estudo da alma separada investigando o estado ontológico da alma quando separada do corpo e colocando questões acerca da distinção entre corpo e alma e da possibilidade desta possuir atividades intelectuais ou racionais independentes de um corpo e de como estas se manifestariam. Aborda temas como a imortalidade da alma e a sua natureza após a morte explorando as diversas implicações filosóficas e teológicas. Estes temas são abordados em parte no «De Anima» e em discussões metafísicas de Aristóteles.</p>_x000d_<p><em>Tractatus Octavus: In Libros Ethicorum. </em>O último tratado aborda a ética com base nos livros de Ética de Aristóteles nomeadamente no «Ethica Nicomachea» Ética a Nicómaco discutindo acerca da felicidade do bem supremo das virtudes morais e intelectuais do fim último do homem e os princípios da vida ética. Examina também a relação entre ética e política e como a moralidade individual se insere no contexto social.</p>_x000d_<p>Baltasar do Amaral Cunha Baixa Viseu 1585 – 16-- um importante filósofo e teólogo da Segunda Escolástica Portuguesa foi admitido na Companhia de Jesus em 14 de Junho de 1601. Nela foi mestre de noviços seguindo a tradição jesuítica de excelência académica e rigor intelectual lecionando Filosofia nos Colégios de Lisboa e de Coimbra.</p>_x000d_<p>Publicou o resumo do trabalho final de uma das cadeiras do curso de filosofia com o título: «Conclusiones metaphysicae. Quaestio disputanda. Num possit produci aliquid corporeum supernaturale». É composta por dois fólios e foi impressa em Coimbra na oficina de Diogo Gomes Loureiro em 1607. Esta obra faz parte de uma tradição académica características das universidades desde a sua fundação na Idade Média e que foi muito usada pelos Jesuítas. As «Quaestiones disputatae» que eram teses ou disputas públicas realizadas nas universidades e colégios jesuítas. Nessas disputas temas complexos de metafísica teologia ou filosofia natural eram debatidos por estudantes avançados geralmente sob a supervisão de um professor mais experiente. Neste caso estes trabalho de Baltazar do Amaral foi orientado por Jorge Cabral outro proeminente jesuíta da época académico jesuíta. A questão central da obra é «Num possit produci aliquid corporeum supernaturale» que se traduz como «Pode algo corporal ser produzido de maneira sobrenatural». Este tipo de questão metafísica está relacionado com a possibilidade de intervenção divina ou miraculosa no mundo material um tema recorrente nas discussões teológicas e filosóficas da época.</p>_x000d_<p>Domingo de Urbino fl. 1618 - gravador de que não se conhecem dados biográficos. </p>_x000d_<p>EN 27.5x20.5 cm. xxvi 425 i.e. 405 cxi pp. Contemporary full leather binding with raised bands and gilt tools on the spine.</p>_x000d_<p>Illustrated with a beautiful frontispiece etched in metal plate with a markedly baroque aesthetic depicting the Child Jesus in the centre with the Cross in the glory of angels. It is signed 'Dñc Urbin fecit.' - Dominicus Urbinus Sunday of Urbino fl. 1618 - no biographical data. It also has a large woodcut engraving of the Rose of the Winds on page 207 and a beautiful engraving with two feathers and the motto <em>In utrumque paratus</em> on the back of the last numbered leaf.</p>_x000d_<p>It also includes several elaborate headpieces distinctive <em>fleurons</em> and decorated initials with allegorical scenes anthropomorphic figures architectural motifs and plant motifs. These woodcut ornaments that adorn the work contain the sacred trigram IHS generally used by the Society of Jesus several times namely at the beginning of the indexes and in the elaborate engravings at the beginning of the treatises with the exception of the first one.</p>_x000d_<p>The text is in round characters and some italics framed by a border made up of two simple fillets. It is laid out in two columns with the exception of preliminary texts on Roman numeral pages. The running headings pagination and notes printed in the margin are placed inside the frame between the fillets.</p>_x000d_<p>Copy with ex-libris from Francisco da Gama Caeiro with the motto <em>Fideliter non serviliter</em> on the front pastedown and shelf mark label with 3.373 on the front pastedown. Small leather flaws on the spine and superficial signs of wear on the binding. Slight damp stains most noticeable between pages 1-50 and on the last numbered pages. There are moth peaks from page 229 onwards most of which do not reach the text area but some of which sometimes affect the marginal notes and the frame but never prevent reading. He was admitted to the Society of Jesus on 14 June 1601. As a member of the Society of Jesus he was involved in the education and training of young people following the Jesuit tradition of academic excellence and intellectual rigour teaching philosophy at the Colleges of Lisbon and Coimbra. a philosopher and theologian committed to the intellectual issues of his time in the context of the so-called second scholasticism.</p>_x000d_<p>Baltasar do Amaral published the summary of the final work of one of the subjects of the philosophy course with the title: 'Conclusiones metaphysicae. Quaestio disputanda. Num possit produci aliquid corporeum supernaturale'. It is made up of two folios and was printed in Coimbra in the workshop of Diogo Gomes Loureiro in 1607.</p>_x000d_<p>This work is part of an academic tradition that has been characteristic of universities since they were founded in the Middle Ages and which was widely used by the Jesuits. The 'Quaestiones disputatae' which were theses or public disputes held in Jesuit universities and colleges. In these disputations complex topics of metaphysics theology or natural philosophy were debated by advanced students usually under the supervision of a more experienced professor. In this case Baltazar do Amaral"s work was supervised by Jorge Cabral another prominent Jesuit scholar of the time. The central question of the work is 'Num possit produci aliquid corporeum supernaturale' which translates as 'Can something bodily be produced supernaturally'.
