(GOVENDER, ROBERT):
THE MARTYRDOM OF PATRICE LUMUMBA.
London, Neillgo, 1971. Cloth, inked cross on fly else fine in torn/def. d/w, pp. xxxvi, 265. ¶ African nationalist leader and first Prime minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo. "Could Patrice Lumumba have avoided his terrible end? Yes, the author maintains, and even become a prosperous man in the process. There would have been riches galore ... and what is more, his would have been a nice, likeable image in Western propaganda organs. In such circumstances even the most viciously African-hating newspaper in the West would have heaped encomiums on his head for his statesmanlike qualities. Statesmanship, in this context of course, simply means outright treachery to the cause of African nationalism and complete and servile obedience to foreign government and powerful financial trusts" (d/w blurb).

(KARENGA, MAULANA RON). KARENGA, MAULANA RON. CLYDE HALISI & JAMES MTUME, EDITORS
THE QUOTABLE KARENGA
Los Angeles, US., 1967, First Edition. Stapled Pictorial Wrappers, 8vo, 32pp, no illustrations. Dr. Maulana Ron Karenga (born Ronald McKinley Everett) was the founder of the Los Angeles-based Black Nationalist movement US - sometimes referred to as "United Slaves". US frequently operated in opposition to their rivals, the more widespread Black Panther Party, culminating in a deadly gun battle between the two on the UCLA campus in 1969. Not long after, Karenga and two associates were tried and convicted for torturing two US members, for which he served five years in prison. Upon his release, Dr. Karenga revived the dormant US, has since taught studies in Black History and Culture, and is credited with developing the holiday Kwanzaa. Published by US at the height of his influence and notoriety, this slender book is divided into chapters containing Karenga's thoughts on "Black Cultural Nationalism", "Revolution", "Politics", "House System", "Art", "Religion", and "Liberals". A most presentable copy of the 1967 first printing of this uncommon document of sixties West Coast radicalism showing some mild soiling, spotting and discoloration to its covers.. Very Good -.
