Two half-page woodcut illustrations show the architecture of Japanese buildings. The first view is of Arai it is animated with a wide variety of Japanese moving along the street infront of the Guards. Pilgrims men and women with children ladened horses and a host of others pass infront of the "Go-Yoh" lantern. The second scene shows the vast interior of a Japanese Ryokan inn with palanquin set to he side women bearing trays with tea bowls while others sit on thier knees waiting. Tansu and other utencils in the background with Tatami mat floors. Both are illustrated by "Our Special Artist" meaning the I.L.N.'s special artist who most often was Charles Wirgman. . unknown

This battle took place in the neighborhood of the Ning-Po. Chinese naval pirates became bolder as the Bri- tish fleet reduced their patrols in the Shanghai area. London 1860 I.L.N. Single sheet 2 engravings very good one shows Dr. D.S. Macgowan M.D. the lower shows a grand view of the Edo Tokyo Castle with text 28.5 x 40.5 cm. This full sheet shows two woodcut views. The first shows Dr. D.S.Macgwan medical missionary to China on his visit to Japan. He published an interesting essay on the electric telegraph and cyclones which was also published in Japanese with the help of the Prince of Satzuma Satsuma. Macgowan also printed his impressions of the Japanese. He also published other books about China and medical missions in China. Substantial text accompanies the illustration as well as continues on the back side. The second illustration shows the grand Imperial LPalace at Jeddo old Tokyo Japan. With caption. . unknown
