London 1865 I.L.N. Single sheet 2 woodcut engravings very good captions 28.5 x 40.5 cm. An excellent early example of Japanese celebrating the New Year in the streets of Yokohama. The caption reads: "JAPANESE GAME OF BATTLEDORE AND SHUTTLECOCK IN THE STREETS OF YOKOHAMA." This livelyscene shows many children flying kites spinnig tops walking on stilts other men & women playing shuttlecock with paddles in front of buildings. The second view shows a group of twelve sword bearing Samurai with title: "JAPANESE OFFICERS GOING TO PAY VISITS OF CONGRATULATION." They are in formal dress wearing Haori & Hakama with some bearing the Naginada long polearm weapon while others bear gifts born on their shoulders. Nicely done showing the early period costume and customs. . unknown

McClure and his crew spent three years locked in the pack ice aboard the HMS Investigator before abandoning it before making their escape across the ice.1 Rescued by the HMS Resolute which was itself later lost to the ice McClure returned to England in 1854 where he was knighted and rewarded for completing the passage. 1st. London: Illustrated London News 1894. full page w/story of the arrest and 5 photos of Salta Argentina .Very handsome and suitable for framing. In 1892 he was at the centre of a scandal over the failure of a series of companies which he set up and controlled starting with the London and General Bank and culminating in the Liberator Building Society leaving thousands of investors penniless. Instead of advancing money to home buyers the Liberator had advanced money to property companies to buy properties owned by him at a high price. After the swindle was discovered Balfour fled the country. He was arrested in Argentina by Inspector Frank Froest of Scotland Yard in 1894; with extradition proceedings held up by legal wrangling Froest simply bundled Balfour into a train and then a boat sailing for England. Balfour was tried at the Old Bailey and sentenced to 14 years penal servitude most of which was served in harsh conditions in Portland prison and he was released in 1906. 1st. Unbound. Very Good.
