Marconi: Pp. 505-520 17 figures illustrating the paper. � First publication of this early and important paper preceding by just a few months Marconi's first weak signals received across an ocean. The paper present a description of the experimental process to developing tuning or syntonising the wireless system. He shared the 1909 Nobel Prize in Physics with Karl Ferdinand Braun "in recognition of their contributions to the development of wireless telegraphy" and was ennobled in 1924 as Marchese Marconi.<br><br>"Marconi who was anxious to forestall any competitors sailed for Newfoundland where using a kiteborne antenna and Solari's carbon-on-stell detector with a telephone receiver on 12 December he received the first transatlantic wireless communication the three code dots signifying the letter "S." Already well known Marconi at twenty-seven became world famous overnight." DSB. <br><br>If Marconi felt he needed more publicity he certainly got it in 1912: The two radio operators aboard the Titanic - Jack Phillips and Harold Bride - were not employed by the White Star Line who ran the Titanic but by the Marconi International Marine Communication Company. ‎London: Marconi House Strand. Fair with no dust jacket. 1913. Presumed First UK Edition. Hardcover. Maroon-red boards with Black titling to the front cover only. The cloth to the spine which looks to have been plain has been mostly re-glued together with the under cloth showing through here and there with faint hand-written lettering on it reading downwards = 'General Orders 1913'. The spine is poor. The boards are patchy/discoloured and cloth 'bubbled' in some areas but overall are sound and complete front and back. Outer hinges good inner hinges splitting. There Is a small circular label with lettering & numbers on on the top front corner stained /torn but the same - P873 - written clearly on the top of the title page. A red wax seal with intertwined letters CI CE is stamped on the seal which is between the title 'General Orders' and 'Marconi House.' at the foot of the front cover. There is a small raised bumping of the cloth near the inner foot of the front cover and then a light brown stain which runs from the bottom of the front cover through the bottom of the text to the end affecting only the bottom of the blank margin of all the pages in a small semi circle average 0.7 cms . Otherwise internally the front free endpaper has a page of pencil notes and the front free endpaper has the former owner's name in old ink - crossed through in the same hand/ink and 'room 13' in the same hand written below that. There is also a small circular 2.5 cms diam faded /rubbed stamp next to the name and this appears about 6 times throughout the book - it's difficult to read the stamp but I think it says something like 'Marconis Wireless Telegraph Co Ltd'. The whole book is interleaved with plain paper leaves and I assumed originally that this interleaving was the work of the late Joanna Greenlaw from whom I bought this book as she was using this book when writing her books and the pencil notes on the front pastedown are hers I'm sure. Joanna's formative years were as a male naval radio officer and had a gender change later she was then known to many Marconi Marine ex-employees as Paul Lintzgy where he dealt with the activities of Marconi Radio Officers. She wrote �The Swansea Copper Barques and Cape Horners� and she lectured worldwide on many subjects. There is however one stamp on one of the leaves of plain paper so I think the interleaving must have been put in earlier. The name crossed out on the front endpaper is I'm sure that of George Turnbull Deputy Manager of the Marconi International Marine Communication Company. The date pasted on to foot of the Title page is '1st September 1913' but there is no date underneath the label to obscure and Marconi House became the Headquarters of the Marconi Companies in 1912. So whether this was the First issue of their General Orders ready for updating I don't know From research the General Orders seem to have been first done in 1902 but in what form Again . There are 141 pages including the Index PLUS all the plain interleaves. At the end of the book there are 3 fold-out Appendices - being Abstract tables showing "Traffic accepted for Transmission during the voyage/month ending 31st July 1913" for 1 S. S. Brittanic Station. 2 same Station - but for 'Retransmission' and 3 same - but 'Traffic Received for Delivery'. Contents cover: - General Instructions; Ships Discipline; Care of Apparatus; Inspecting of Stations; Clerical Duties; Telegraphic Duties; Accounts Salary and Personal; Duties in Home & Foreign Ports; Signaling Method of; Classification of Traffic; Acceptance of Traffic; International Charges; Accounting; Forms and Their Uses; Abstracts; Regulation of Traffic; Special Arrangements.
