‎The Monthly Epic - A History of Canadian Magazines 1789-1989‎

‎355 pages including index and black and white illustrations. Traces the magazine industry from its boisterous pre-Confederation beginnings to the vibrant and influential medium that it is today. Will satisfy not only journalists, editors and publishers, but any reader of magazines who looks to them for the timely information that they provide. Book is unmarked but for remainder stamp upon bottom edge and shows only faint wear. Attractive price-clipped dust jacket shows very light wear. Excellent copy. Book‎

‎Moore, Robert; Buckley, Jamie‎

‎Behold the Front Page!‎

‎Unpaginated. What would the bible be like if it was written today? What if the task of gathering and spreading the Good News was left to the journalists of the late twentieth century? Lovely clean, unmarked copy with very light wear. Book‎

‎Jose, F. Sionil‎

‎Mass: A Novel‎

‎232 pages. Winner of the 1980 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Journalism, Literature and Creative Communication Arts. The story of the illegitimate son of Antonio Samson, the major protagonist in Sionil Jose's novel, The Pretenders. Now grown-up, Pepe Samson escapes from his village of Cabugawan to live in Manila's sprawling slum - Tondo. The story of his journey from one swampland to another; also the story of thousands of young Filipinos who have finally found meaning in their lives. An affirmation of faith in the future as envisioned by the dedicated Filipino youth today. The last, in terms of chronology, of the author's five Rosales novels. Light wear. Unmarked. Nice copy. Book‎

‎Rayner, William‎

‎Images of History : Twentieth Century British Columbia Through the Front Pages‎

‎180 pages including index. A decade-by-decade history of 20th century British Columbia as recorded on the front (and inside) pages of our newspapers. This instant history is sometimes told eloquently, and sometimes matter-of-factly, but it is a living record of our society. Author spent 34 years with the Vancouver Sun. Black and white illustrations. Lightest wear. Clean, bright and unmarked. Excellent copy in glossy illustrated covers. Book‎

‎Davey, Frank‎

‎Reading Kim Right‎

‎175pp. A book not about Kim Campbell, but about "Kim Campbell." It addresses not a person but a public image that has come to Canadian national consciousness in a cluster of photos, quips, speeches and headline adjectives. Suggests that such a web of images is all any voter has available for judgement in a modern democracy and further, that in the late 20th century democracy called Canada, we get not the candidate we deserve, but the candidate of our desires. (Ms. Campbell and her party were all but destroyed in the federal election which occurred shortly after this book was printed.) Light wear. Clean and unmarked. Nice copy. Book‎

‎Brooks, Brian S.; Sissors, Jack Zanville‎

‎The Art of Editing‎

‎461 pages. Clean, bright and unmarked with negligible wear. Lovely copy. Book‎

‎Wiens, Peter B.‎

‎Wenn der Farmer Schriftleiter Wird : A Collection of Editorials As They Appeared in Der Bote 1963 to 1976‎

‎310 pages. Text in German. "For 13 years (1963-1976) the author served as Editor of Der Bote. His touch with the 'grass roots', his love for the Church, his kindness and sense of humour combined to make his editorials refreshing. Some of these editorials which explored his special interests in leadership, Church schools and the Mennonite Brotherhood now appear in this book." - from dust jacket. Book clean, bright and unmarked. Moderate wear to dust jacket which is now preserved in a glossy new archival-grade Brodart cover. Very nice copy. Book‎

‎Templeton, R.J.‎

‎The Future is Ours... Not Hitler's - Second and Third Series‎

‎56 articles which appeared in the Vancouver, B.C. press from February 8, 1941 through February 28, 1942. The articles were commissioned by Colonel H.S. Tobin, Managing Director of Vancouver Breweries Limited and appeared in the Vancouver media. Given the dire situation faced by Britain, the directors of the brewery felt it best to set aside the greater portion of its advertising appropriation for patriotic, rather than regular business purposes and these articles were the result. Due to their popularity, they were reprinted in book form. Prior owner's name upon title page. Somewhat above-average external wear to pale green cardcovers which bear a two-inch opening between spine and top of back cover. A worthy copy of this fascinating look back to the early 1940s. Canadian unity is discussed. Book‎

‎Ahluwalia, Raj‎

‎We Interrupt This Program : The News Broadcasts That Kept Us Tuned In - Complete with Two Audio CDs‎

Examples include: Canada enters the war on Germany; Man Walks on the Moon; Parti Quebecois wins the Quebec Election; Montreal Massacre; Air India Bombing. "Two CDs include broadcasts from these important and moving events in the history of our country and of the world." - from dust jacket. Book clean, bright and unmarked with virtually zero wear. Dust jacket in similar condition with the exception of a closed one-inch opening to top edge of back panel. An excellent copy. Book‎

‎Pierson, John D.‎

‎Tokutomi Soho 1863-1957 - A Journalist for Modern Japan‎

‎Webb, Gary (Signed); Waters, Maxine (Foreword)‎

‎Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion‎

‎Signed and inscribed by Gary Webb upon half-title page. xxviii, 548 pages. Footnotes, glossary and index. "Shows how the L.A. crack market flourished through a breathtaking combination of government negligence, greed, and criminal conduct... Demonstrates that U.S. government agencies, including the CIA, DEA and FBI, were aware of the activities of this well-connected drug network and did little or nothing to stop it. Indeed, in several instances documented here, the Justice Department, the CIA, and the secret National Security Council unit run by Oliver North, took extraordinary steps to protect the ring from public exposure. In the final chapters Webb reveals the conflict that led to his newspaper's stunning repudiation of its own series - and at what cost he stood by his story." - from dust jacket. Webb was found dead in his home in 2004 with two gunshot wounds to his head. Curiously, his death was ruled a suicide. Clean and unmarked with light wear. Dust jacket now in archival-grade mylar. A quality signed copy of this heroic work. Book‎

‎Tarbell, Ida; Steffens, Lincoln; Poole, Ernest‎

‎McClure's Magazine, May 1903, Vol. XXI, No. 1 - The History of the Standard Oil Company (Chapter VII) / Pittsburgh Corruption / New York's Street Waifs‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of chapter seven, The Crisis of 1878, of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This feature of 16 pages includes photos of: the company's tank farm at Olean, NY; John L. McKinney; Torpedoed oil wells with side-flow and upright flow; A.J. Cassatt; M.N. Allen; a 25,000 oil tank on fire; and a one-page illustration of the hanging in effigy of "Buck" McCandless. With this work, Tarbell invented what we know today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. The New York University Department of Journalism ranked this study as the fifth best work of 20th-century American journalism. Also contained in this issue is a most scathing 15-page photo-illustrated article on the corruption pervasive in Pittsburgh, PA. Also included is a 9-page article entitled Waifs of the (New York) Street which describes, with illustrations, the heart-breaking life of children forced to work as 'newsboys, peddlers, messengers, and bootblacks that swarm by day and night through every crowded street of busy New York.' Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average wear. This copy lacks: covers; backstrip; pages 1-2 (title page and first half of table of contents); Advertising pages 133-136. Book‎

‎McClure's Magazine, December (Dec.) 1903, Vol. XXII, No. 2 - The History of the Standard Oil Company - The War on the Rebate‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of The War on the Rebate, Chapter 1 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 14-page chapter includes a one-page illustration of J.D. Rockefeller by George Varian, plus photos of William C. Scofield, Daniel Shurmer, John Teagle, George Rice, and Benjamin Butler. This chapter deals with organized espionage, the Scofield-Shurmer-Teagle Case, and related matters. Also contained in this issue is an intersting article entitled The Lone Fighter, by Ray Stannard Baker, which argues the U.S. is not a free country and Americans are not free, due to labor bosses, and government by and for 'The Bosses". Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average but not excessive external wear. Moderate moisture exposure. Dozens of pages of glorious illustrated ads. A sound vintage copy. Book‎

‎Tarbell, Ida; Baker, Ray Stannard; Schell, Frank H.‎

‎McClure's Magazine, February 1904, Vol. XXII, No. 4: The History of the Standard Oil Company - Cutting To Kill‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of Cutting to Kill, Chapter 3 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 14-page chapter deals with J.D. Rockefeller's fervent desire to learn every detail of the oil trade, to be able to reach its remotest point, to control even its weakest factor - as this was his ideal of doing business. Illustrated with facsimiles of documents. Also included is an intersting article by Ray Stannard Baker which examines the corner in labor in San Francisco, where unions hold undisputed sway. The Owl Drug Co. boycott is discussed and photos of Walter Mac Arthur, Eugene E. Schmitz, and P.H. McCarthy are included. Also included is war correspondent Frank H. Schell's personal account of his experience at the Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest day in American history. Binding intact. Unmarked. Above-average external wear. Moderate moisture exposure. Dozens of glorious illustrated ads. A worthy vintage copy. Book‎

‎McClure's Magazine, June 1904, Vol. XXIII, No. 2: The History of the Standard Oil Company - A Modern War For Independence‎

‎A very rare copy of this, the first appearance of A Modern War For Independence, Chapter 6 of Part 2 of Ida Tarbell's ground-breaking History of the Standard Oil Company. This 18-page chapter deals with the united opposition of producers which developed against J.D. Rockefeller's heavy-handed dominance of their industry. Illustrated with photos of A.D. Wood, Lewis Emery Jr., Thomas W. Phillips, Peter Theobald, E.H. Jennings, David Kirk, Michael Murphy, James W. Lee, Hugh King, and Clarence Walker. With this work, Tarbell invented what is known today as investigative journalism. She was motivated to expose the methods of J.D. Rockefeller's Standard Oil as she felt he had unfairly damaged her father's oil business. The New York University Department of Journalism ranked this study as the fifth best work of 20th-century American journalism. Also included is a fascinating illustrated article by P.T. McGrath entitled The Peril of the Icebergs which discusses the horrors of ships colliding with icebergs, strongly foreshadowing the Titanic disaster eight years later. Dozens of glorious illustrated ads. Binding intact. Unmarked. Average wear. Lacking covers, backstrip, and half of page 85 which contained ads. A worthy vintage copy. Book‎
