Four Scenes with Elephants Rhinos and Warring Figures Designs for book illustrations c. 1770s
Included in this cycle of four scenes sold individually for $9000 or as a group for $36000 is a drawing of a fight between an elephant and a rhino a surprisingly popular theme throughout Western art which originated from Pliny's description of the creatures' natural animosity in his Natural History AD 23-79. The text translated into German was transcribed by Durer in his celebrated 1515 drawing of the Rhinoceros and was also included in most editions of the woodcut. The composition of this subject in this group with the rhino spearing the elephant's left side resembles two prints of the same subject by Ambroise Pare for his Discours.de la Mumie 1852 and Antonio Tempesta's Rhinoceros Fight of 1605. Photographs of exterior interior views of town buildings including: Portal im Rathaushof; Portal I am Kgl. Gymnasium; Blick I.d. Herrengasse n.d. Brugtor; the Burgtor; Klingentor; Spitalter; Baumeisterhaus; St. Jackobskirche Hochaltar; Toplerschloss; Mauerpartie am Klingentor; St. Jacobskirche Marienaltar von Tiolmann Riemenschneider; Rodertorturm; Partie am Stoberleinsturm; Markusturm u. Roderbogen v.d. Hafengasse aus.; Hof der Marien-Apotheke; and many others. Each image with the studio imprint date title and plate number of the NPG; silver gelatin process in black and white developed on heavy photographic paper with matte finish. Images are about 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" size overall. A few of the images with a little edge-chipping; one image with title bar trimmed away a few with some silvering of the process evident at the edges. In the original terra-cotta-colored cloth portfolio covers with a paste-down photo-illustration. One cdv with hand coloring. The cabinet cards average approx. 4 1/4" x 6 1/2" overall size. Cartes about 2 1/2" x 4" with several longer examples. A few of the cdv's with a name identified: Balke Virujinski Bergmann Fuhrmann; most of the photos are not identified. Several with edge tips wear soiling chipping to the mounts; a few corners clipped or chipped; others very clean and with clear images. A couple with the image faded and with some spotting. Photographs all contained within a red-velvet covered album of the period with gilt decorations and metal clasps broken; one gilt corner mount unpinned; lacking the central ornament; binding worn leaves loose within. Several of the images are loosely laid-in; many of the mounting 'windows' torn. The group of photographs are in very good condition overall; the binding is in fair to good condition. Steglitz Berlin Germany: Neue Photographische Gesellschaft NPG 1906. A group of 42 images of this ancient town in southern Germany in the Franconia region of Bavaria known for its medieval old town. Photographs of exterior interior views of town buildings including: Portal im Rathaushof; Portal I am Kgl. Gymnasium; Blick I.d. Herrengasse n.d. Brugtor; the Burgtor; Klingentor; Spitalter; Baumeisterhaus; St. Jackobskirche Hochaltar; Toplerschloss; Mauerpartie am Klingentor; St. Jacobskirche Marienaltar von Tiolmann Riemenschneider; Rodertorturm; Partie am Stoberleinsturm; Markusturm u. Roderbogen v.d. Hafengasse aus.; Hof der Marien-Apotheke; and many others. Each image with the studio imprint date title and plate number of the NPG; silver gelatin process in black and white developed on heavy photographic paper with matte finish. Images are about 7 1/2" x 9 1/2" size overall. A few of the images with a little edge-chipping; one image with title bar trimmed away a few with some silvering of the process evident at the edges. In the original terra-cotta-colored cloth portfolio covers with a paste-down photo-illustration. The portfolio is very worn broken flap pieces loose; overall the photographs are in very good condition very sharp and well-taken photographic imagery. . Photography. Portfolio. Very Good.
