‎An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton, one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines, featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925, with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war (the editor-in-chief having been called up for service). It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2,000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start, this sumptuous publication ?was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society,? (Françoise Tétart-Vittu, ?La Gazette du bon ton?, in Dictionnaire de la mode, 2016) and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot, known as Cochin, later used (in 1946) by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils, heightened in colors, some highlighted in gold or palladium.‎

‎Der Bildhauer, Zeichner und Graphiker Paul Hamann führte ein bewegtes Leben: von 1910-1914 besuchte er die Landeskunstschule in Hamburg bei dem Bildhauer Richard Luksch (1872-1936), in dieser Zeit bekam er die Gelegenheit, eine Assistenz bei Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) zu absolvieren. 1914 wurde er zum Kriegsdienst eingezogen und war als ?Mappenzeichner? an die Ost- und Westfront geschickt. Nach dem Krieg ließ er sich als freischaffender Künstler in Hamburg nieder, 1919 gehörte er zu den Mitgründern der Künstlergemeinschaft ?Hamburgische Sezession?, der er bis zu ihrer Auflösung 1933 angehörte. Er war außerdem Mitglied verschiedener anderer Künstlervereinigungen in Hamburg und arbeitete als Lehrer an der Landeskunstschule. Er schuf abstrakte Holzschnitzereien, Kleinplastiken, Porträts und lebensgroße Skulpturen ? meist weibliche Akte ? für Gärten und Parks. Nur wenige seiner Frühwerke haben den Krieg überlebt. 1920 heiratete er seine Schülerin, die Malerin Hilde Guttmann (1898-1987). 1924 folgte die Gründung der deutsch-französischen Freundschaftsgruppe ?Groupe artistique franco-allemand?. 1926 entwickelte Hamann ein neues, schonenderes Verfahren zur Abnahme von Lebendmasken mit dem Ziel, damit eine Galerie von Porträtbüsten bedeutender Zeitgenossen zu schaffen. Am Ende seines Lebens war die Sammlung auf 96 Arbeiten angewachsen. Darunter befanden sich z. B. Lebendmasken von Bertold Brecht (1898-1956), Gustaf Gründgens (1899-1963), Jean Cocteau (1889-1963), Man Ray (1890-1976), Renée Sintenis (1888-1965) u.a. Bis 1926 lebte das Künstlerpaar abwechselnd in Hamburg und Worpswede, Dann zogen sie nach Berlin. Hamann hatte Kontakt zur ?Novembergruppe?, eine enge Verbindung bestand zu Ernesto de Fiori (1884-1945), Hermann Haller (1880-1950) und Renée Sintenis. Auf Einladung des Diplomaten Sir Harold Nicolson (1886-1968) hielt sich Paul Hamann mehrmals für längere Zeit in London auf. Wegen des jüdischen Hintergrundes ihrer Familien ging das Paar im April 1933 nach Paris, hier verkehrten sie im Kreis von Jean Cocteau und André Gide (1869-1951). 1936 zogen sie weiter nach London und eröffneten ein Atelier in West Hampstead. Hamann war Gründungsmitglied der ?Free League of Culture (FDKB)? und Mitglied des ?Hampstead Arts Council?. 1940 wurde Paul Hamann, wie viele deutsche Flüchtlinge, auf der Isle of Man in ein Internierungslager gebracht. 1941 trennte sich das Ehepaar und Paul Hamann gründete in London eine private Kunstschule. 1950 wurde der Künstler englischer Staatsbürger. Von 1953 an besuchte er mehrmals seine Heimatstadt Hamburg und versuchte vergeblich, als Dozent an der Landeskunstschule zu arbeiten. Hamburg sprach ihm eine lebenslange Rente zu. Paul Hamann ist mit seinen Werken in der Londoner Nationalgallery, Berliner Nationalgalerie, der Hamburger Kunsthalle, im Museum für Hamburgische Geschichte und dem Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg vertreten.‎

Dedicated to Warren Hastings, late Governor General of Bengal, Hamilton's first novel appeared in 1796 to considerable acclaim. It satirises society through the device of Oriental letters on the model of works by Montesquieu and Goldsmith, its theme being that women also can be both strong and able. The Preface, based partly on her brother's experiences in India, is both extensive and erudite. Elizabeth Hamilton (1758-1816), Irish novelist, essayist and poet. Born in Belfast, she moved as a child to Stirling, later to London, and finally to Edinburgh in 1804. She directed all her works to her own sex whose qualities of mind she admired and promoted.
