‎Erasmus Quellinus was een leerling en medewerker van Rubens. Met zijn rijk gevarieerde oeuvre en zijn verzorgde stijl leverde hij een belangrijke bijdrage aan de fascinerende schilderkunst van de 17de eeuw en aan de artistieke uitstraling van Antwerpen, waar hij in 1640 stadsschilder werd. Zijn leergierigheid, zijn belangstelling voor de filosofie en zijn interesse voor andere kunstvormen, vooral voor de beeldhouwkunst en de architectuur, maken hem tot een atypische en erudiete kunstenaar. Hij werkte dikwijls samen met stilleven-, genre- en dierenschilders. Zo ontstond een corpus van originele, hoogwaardige werken, met intrigerende bloemenschilderijen als beste voorbeeld. Quellinus werkte in de barokke stijl van Rubens, maar ging geleidelijk aan een andere richting uit: gebaren en bewegingen werden minder exuberant, op de achtergrond kwamen er monumentale architectuurdecors en het kleurenpalet werd alsmaar levendiger. Erasmus Quellinus wordt terecht gezien als een voorloper van het classicisme in de Vlaamse schilderkunst.‎

Bumping to the lower backstrip edge and book corners. Fading to the backstrip commensurate with the loss of dustwrapper and some faint rubs to the book panels. Browning to the text block edges. Browning and offset tanning to the endpapers and age toning of the internal text. Previous owners details to the top right-hand corner of the free front end paper. Plain text dustwrapper with dark cream coloured background with back and read titles to the front panel and back titles to the backstrip. Chipping to be dustwrapper corners and backstrip edges. Rubbing to the dustwrapper edges and dustwrapper panels and considerable browning of the backstrip. The lower 0.5 " of the backstrip is missing there is a piece missing from the top backstrip measuring 1.75 " x 1.25 " and a smaller hole is also present 3 inches from the bottom edge. There is a 2.5 " curving tear to the top left-hand corner of the rear dustwrapper panel. Clipping of the dustwrapper front fold over lower right-hand corner. The author who died in 1887 at aged 37 wrote about mid-Victorian rural life in the county of Wiltshire detailing the lives of its labourers small-holders Parsons . Size: 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall. In part: "That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Patriotism Valour Fidelity and Abilities of Henry Pilliam I do appoint him a midshipman in the Navy of the United States." Neatly signed at the conclusion by President Jefferson and countersigned by Secretary pf the Navy Robert Smith. The document bears an embossed Navy Department seal to the upper left. Intersecting folds overall wrinkling and light staining otherwise fine condition. Such appointments by Thomas Jefferson are quite scarce as he and the Republican party opposed a strong navy. However as Jefferson's term neared its conclusion the naval forces were beginning to grow out of necessity in order to protect the maritime interests of the United States as merchant vessels were  frequently being interfered with during their voyages on the high seas. Ultimately these disputes would culminate in the War of 1812 during President Madison's administration. A desirable and well-preserved example of a Jefferson appointment. Very good.</p> unknown‎

The corners of the book are scuffed and there is rubbing and fading to the covers particularly back panel closest to the spine where there is a small hole. External and internal pages are brown and there are a few creases as well. No publishing date evident but publishing date approximately 1950s. On the verso of the front cover back cover and verso of the back cover there are advertisements.
