‎An original print used to illustrate the Gazette du bon ton, one of the most attractive and influential 20th century fashion magazines, featuring the talents of French artists and other contributors from the burgeoning Art Deco movement. A celebrated fashion magazine established in 1912 by Lucien Vogel, La Gazette du bon ton appeared until 1925, with a hiatus from 1915 to 1920 due to the war (the editor-in-chief having been called up for service). It consisted of 69 issues printed in only 2,000 copies each and notably illustrated with 573 color plates and 148 sketches of the models of the great designers. Right from the start, this sumptuous publication ?was aimed at bibliophiles and fashionable society,? (Françoise Tétart-Vittu, ?La Gazette du bon ton?, in Dictionnaire de la mode, 2016) and was printed on fine vergé paper using a type cut specially for the magazine by Georges Peignot, known as Cochin, later used (in 1946) by Christian Dior. The prints were made using stencils, heightened in colors, some highlighted in gold or palladium.‎

‎ÉDITION ORIGINALE. Il s'agit de chroniques parisiennes constituées de «Pall-Mall» dialogués, faisant suite à ceux de La Petite classe et parus dans L'Écho de Paris en 1898 et 1899. EXEMPLAIRE DE ROBERT DE MONTESQUIOU, contenant un ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE signé à pleine page sur le feuillet de faux-titre: «à Monsieur / Robert de / Montesquiou / cette dernière / erreur d'une jeunesse / un peu prolongée. / Cordialement / Jean Lorrain». RENCONTRE PIQUANTE entre les deux hommes de lettres, qui servirent tous les deux de modèle à Marcel Proust pour le personnage du baron Charlus. Pendant vingt ans, de 1884 à 1904, les chroniques littéraires de Jean Lorrain ne manquèrent pas de lui attirer des haines féroces. Bien que partageant le même goût pour les hommes, Jean Lorrain détestait Robert de Montesquiou qu'il avait surnommé "Grotesquiou" ou "Hortensiou", à cause de son célèbre recueil de poèmes "Les Hortensias bleus" (1896). Il s'était inspiré de l'écrivain pour créer le personnage du comte de Muzarett dans "Monsieur de Phocas" (1901). L'exemplaire figure sous le n°1102 dans la deuxième vente de la bibliothèque de Robert de Montesquiou, lors d'une vacation qui eut lieu à l'Hôtel Drouot en avril 1924. DES ÉCRIVAINS BELLIQUEUX : Jean Lorrain, en raison de son agressivité à l'égard de ses confrères, s'exposait à leur mécontentement. Il se battit ainsi en duel avec René Maizeroy et Marcel Proust, faillit le faire avec Guy de Maupassant pour "Très Russe" (1886) et avec Robert de Montesquiou dont il avait fait sa tête de turc favorite. Cependant, bien qu'agacé par les charges sans nuances dont le gratifie Jean Lorrain, Robert de Montesquiou «ne veut pas entendre les coassements qui montent du marécage Lorrain, sur lequel il jette de temps à autre un regard amusé. Il avait refusé la dédicace d'un recueil que lui offrait vers 1885 cet encombrant personnage et ne daignerait pas croiser le fer avec lui comme vient de le faire Proust. Il faut au petit-neveu de d'Artagnan un adversaire de meilleure qualité.» (Philippe Jullian). Du reste Robert de Montesquiou ne tarda pas à faire montre de son courage en se battant en duel peu de temps après avec Henri de Régnier, qui le blessât à la main.
