Issu d'une famille écossaise qui émigra en France à l'époque des Stuart, Macquer opéra une véritable révolution, faisant de la chimie une science à part et non une branche de la pharmacie, ouvrant la voie aux Lavoisier, Gay-Lussac, Thénard, etc. Il fut le premier à constater que l'arsenic est un métal, que les alcalins décolorent le bleu de Prusse, que les diamants ne perdent rien de leur poids lorsqu'on les calcine à l'abri de l'air, etc. Il a décrit les propriétés de l'alumine, de la magnésie, du sulfate de chaux, du sel d'Epsom. Ses travaux sur les métaux sont reconnus. Membre de l'Académie des Sciences, Censeur Royal, professeur de chimie au Jardin du Roi, enfin il modernisa la Manufacture de Sèvres. Minuscule usure à trois coins, petit travail de ver dans la marge extérieure en coin inférieur de quelques feuillets du Tome 1, sinon bel exemplaire, bien relié, avec juste quelques très rares rousseurs.‎

‎* Thomas Babington Macaulay, 1. Baron Macaulay, (* 25. Oktober 1800 in Rothley-Temple, Leicestershire; ? 28. Dezember 1859 in Kensington) war ein britischer Historiker, Dichter und Politiker.... Schon auf der Universität hatte sich Macaulay mit seinen Gedichten Pompeji (Cambridge 1819) und Evenlug (ebd. 1821) Preise erworben. Seine Abhandlung über Milton in der Edinburgh Review (1825) und andere literarische und politische Porträts, von Bacon, Machiavelli, Lord Clive, Warren Hastings, Horace Walpole und Lord Chatham machten Macaulay schnell bekannt. Sie erschienen zuerst ohne seine Autorisation unter dem Titel Critical and miscellaneous essays (Philadelphia 1841) und dann von ihm selbst als Critical and historical essays (London 1843, 3 Bde.) gesammelt. Ihnen reihten sich später die Biographical essays (London 1851) an. Da sich Macaulay in seinen politischen Ansichten den Whigs näherte, so verschafften ihm diese in dem Wahlflecken Calne 1830 eine Wahl ins britische Unterhaus.[3] Macaulay spielte in den Debatten, aus denen die Reformbill hervorging, eine hervorragende Rolle. Die Regierung Grey ernannte ihn 1834 zum Mitglied des Rats in Kalkutta, in welcher Eigenschaft Macaulay den Entwurf eines Strafgesetzbuchs verfasste, das 1838 publiziert wurde.[4] Berühmt, aber schon damals kontrovers wegen der Ungewissheit über die Wirkung von Bildung war seine Forderung in einer Rede von 1835, durch die Übernahme der englischen Bildung für die Eliten in Indien eine Klasse von Personen zu schaffen, die indisch in Blut und Farbe war, aber englisch im Geschmack, in Meinungen, Moral und Intellekt.[5] Man spricht in diesem Zusammenhang von Macaulayism. Hierauf nach Großbritannien zurückgekehrt, wurde er 1839 zu Edinburgh wieder ins Parlament gewählt und erhielt 1839 von Lord Melbourne das Amt des Staatssekretärs im Kriegsministerium, behauptete sich in dieser Stellung bis zum Rücktritt des Whigministeriums 1841 und war während des zweiten Peelschen Ministeriums der hervorragendste Redner der Whigopposition. 1842 gab er seine Lays of ancient Rome heraus, altrömische Legenden in Balladenform, die sich durch dramatische Handlung, malerische Schilderungen und Kraft des Stils auszeichnen. Vom Juli 1846 bis zum Ende 1847 bekleidete Macaulay den Posten eines Paymaster General mit Sitz und Stimme im Kabinett. Bei den Wahlen von 1847 wurde er jedoch wegen des von ihm zugunsten einer Staatsunterstützung des katholischen Seminars in Maynooth abgegebenen Votums von den streng protestantisch gesinnten Wählern Edinburghs nicht wieder gewählt.... ‎J. L. MacFarlane was one of the most noted botanical artists of the 19th century to focus on orchids and a catalyst of what can aptly be termed British "orchidomania." In the late 19th century the English developed a craze for orchids similar to that for tulips in Holland some two hundred years earlier. Although the Holland tulip mania is well known the English love of orchids at this period is not. A single orchid plant could sell for the equivalent of $40000 as collectors eagerly sought new and more exotic specimens. Huge greenhouses were built using technological advances in iron construction as well as new methods of central heating. Adding to such enthusiasm was the fact that Britain enjoyed a brisk trade in botanical specimens and there was soon a proliferation of illustrated periodicals for horticulturists at every level of experience. Orchids were brought to England by collectors from various parts of the world particularly Africa Asia and South America. Since the plants were not in bloom when they arrived potential buyers were unable to determine what the plant would look like when in full flower. As a result artists were commissioned by various horticultural dealers to depict the plants in bloom in order that they could be more easily sold. It was in this way that many artists like MacFarlane got their start in the field of orchid painting though very few ever reached his level of skill and nuance. Incredibly attuned to the smallest details of the most exquisite flowers MacFarlane was uniquely able to capture the beauty and complexity of the orchidaceae. These superb exceptionally large-scale watercolors are foremost examples of this noted artist's original work. MacFarlane captured with outstanding naturalism and vibrancy the alternate subtlety and flamboyance of the orchids the textures of their soft often translucent petals and opaque leaves and stems. ‎* Karel Hynek Mácha (* 16. November 1810 in Prag; ? 6. November 1836 in Leitmeritz) war ein tschechischer Dichter der Romantik. Karel Hynek Mácha wurde 1810 als Sohn eines Müllers in Prag geboren. An der Karls-Universität studierte er Rechtswissenschaften, spielte zugleich jedoch Theater in einer Gruppe um den Schauspieler, Theaterregisseur und Autor Josef Kajetán Tyl (1808?1856). Dort lernte Mácha die Buchhändlerstochter Eleonora Somková (Lori) kennen, mit der er einen nichtehelichen Sohn zeugte. Bereits während seines Studiums unternahm Mácha zahlreiche Reisen nach Nordböhmen, ins Riesengebirge und auch nach Venedig. Aus dieser Zeit stammt auch sein dichterisches Werk, das zu Lebzeiten allerdings keine große Anhängerschaft fand. Die Erstausgabe von Máchas Hauptwerk Máj erschien im April 1836 im Eigenverlag und wurde von der Kritik zunächst ablehnend aufgenommen. Erst seit der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts galt Mácha als wichtigster und hoch verehrter Vertreter der tschechischen Romantik. Im Herbst 1836 trat Mácha ein Praktikum in einer Rechtsanwaltskanzlei in Leitmeritz an. Nur wenige Wochen später starb er kurz vor seinem 26. Geburtstag und drei Tage vor der geplanten Hochzeit mit Lori ? wahrscheinlich an den Folgen einer Unterkühlung, die er sich bei den Löscharbeiten bei einem großen Brand zugezogen haben dürfte. Ihm zu Ehren wurde der im Böhmischen Mittelgebirge bei Doksy gelegene See in Máchovo jezero umbenannt. (Quelle Wikipedia)‎
