N.p. but United States 1867. Hand-coloured lithograph proof before letters. Ocassional marginal repairs. Sheet size: 21 3/4 x 38 3/4 inches. Image area: 17 1/4 x 35 inches. A very rare proof before letters of this spectacular image of two early steam propeller ships leaving harbor off the eastern coast of the United States. The Cuba and the Liberty were in the late 1860s mail ships sailing between Baltimore and Havana with stops along the way including Key West. The Cuba was built in Fairhaven and launched in 1863 serving as a transport for the U. S. Navy. After the war she became a mail ship in tandem with the Liberty. The Liberty was built in Philadelphia in 1864. A Descriptive Catalogue of the Marine Collection to be found at India House New York: 1935 item number 276. unknown

Three promissory notes dated September & October 1865; receipted as paid by the estate of Mrs. Jane Blatchford; for medical expenses including payment to Dr. Josiah Bowers for his attendance and also to Mills & Co. who had covered this expense for the doctor along with medicine and a telegraph dispatch. Documents with three 5 cent Internal Revenue stamps and one two cent stamp affixed; reverse with notes on receiving interest amounts paid and finishing with the principal paid. Three documents varying sizes; approx. 4" x 7 3/4" size; two are attached at one corner with the remains of old wax seal. Old fold lines a little wear. When held to light beneath the author's signature another is visible on the lower paper which appears to be Robert Robinson. William Cullen Bryant 1794-1878 American poet and journalist. ".An attentive listener inquisitive well informed shrewd in professional matters�did not conform to any of the stereotypes of the "poet" of his day.In 1843 Bryant purchased property on Long Island New York at Roslyn where he was not only free to write but also able to pursue his botanical interests planting and nurturing specimens of trees and shrubs from around the world. The house and grounds of Roslyn have been preserved." Albert F. McLean in the ANB Paper is approx. 1 3/4" x 4 1/2" size written finely in black ink. with An engraved portrait of William Cullen Bryant by W. From the County Treasurer of New York at the Broadway Bank signed by the Mayor John T. Hoffman 1828-1888 born in Ossining in Westchester County and was governor of New York 1869 -1872 judge elected 1860 and Mayor of New York 1866 - 1868. Supposed involvement with the Boss Tweed Ring ruined his political career; Hoffman was the last to-date Mayor of NY City also elected as Governor of the state. Counter-signed by the city comptroller and by Brown on the back of the check. Approx. 3 3/4" x 8" size; including a nice bit of job-printing: a good woodcut vignette and ornate corner ornaments around the edges printed in blue tones by A. Brown & Co. Nassau Street. Large format photograph of this ornately-decorated locomotive; our research indicates that it was a 4-4-0 American type outside-connected engine originally built for the New London Northern Vermont Line eventually transferred to the Central Vermont RR and eventually scrapped in 1900 see Sean Lamb's 'named locomotive' information on the riptrack site; image size approx. 11 1/2" x 16"; laid-down to paper backer with a narrow border all around three sides; at bottom edge is a printed paper label also laid-down to the backer with the partial name of the works and the photographer; see the Benson Ford Research Center archive for a full depiction of this name label; lines visible in the image where the photograph had originally been pieced together to form the 'view' which is integral to the final photo not divided; closed 2" and 1/2" tears at top also with a few chips at that edge; another �" closed tear at left margin; mount paper edge-worn and darkened some soiling; shallow crease at top right corner; back of paper also rubbed and worn; in good condition overall and an informative visual example of this works' railroad equipment engineering and decorative expertise.
