The paintings that Rubens devoted to the theme of the youth of Christ are among the most impressive and influential examples of art that expressed Roman Catholic spirituality as reasserted at the Council of Trent. The vast majority of these works are his numerous images of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi. The oldest sources for these and other scenes from Christ's youth are of course the accounts of the Gospels, but these were usefully completed by several supplementary descriptions, more especially the Apocrypha, patristic literature, and the pious legends woven around the birth of Christ in the course of the Middle Ages. In his interpretations of the scenes from Christ's youth, Rubens built to a large extent on a pictorial tradition that had developed in the Low Countries and Italy in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in which mediaeval views and patterns originating from Northern Europe had merged with those of the Italian Renaissance. In Rubens's representations of scenes from Christ's youth, and especially in his many interpretations of the themes of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Adoration of the Magi, the ideas of Counter-Reformation iconography found their most explicit embodiment in the clear Eucharistic connotations that are present in these works.‎

‎Acquaforte e rotella, 1864, firmata in lastra in basso a sinistra. IN basso a destra troviamo l’imprint dell’editore Carlo Lovera di Torino. Dimensioni: 420x305 mm (foglio), 215 mm x 175 mm (ovale). Stampata su carta cina, appllicata su carta coeva. Opera tratta da Album speciale della Società Promotrice delle Belle Arti di Torino. È questa la più bella delle acqueforti di Ferdinando Di Breme, forse l'unica in cui l'artista raggiunga un effettivo equilibrio tra il segno preciso e minuto della tradizione del Lauro e quello sciolto e libero di Fontanesi. Ferdinando Di Breme Di Sartirana, nato da una delle maggiori famiglie dell'aristocrazia di Milano, si trasferì adolescente a Torino, visse a Parigi tra il '37 e il '48 dove venne nominato presidente della Società Entomologica di Francia. Nel '49 venne nominato Senatore del Regno, nel '50 Presidente della Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Torino e nel '55 Direttore dell'Accademia Albertina. L'intervento del Di Breme a favore della diffusione della grafica originale non si limitò ai provvedimenti istituzionali, ma si concretò pure in una cospicua attività acquafortista, dovuta alla frequentazione del Fontanesi a Ginevra. Nel 1864 esce a Torino l'Album speciale della Promotrice, con il frontespizio e una tavola del Di Breme. Il presidente della Società degli acquafortisti di Parigi le lodava per "la fermeté du dessein et l'énergie de la pointe". Infatti, il Breme., che ebbe anche il merito d'instaurare all'Albertina una scuola d'incisione, occupa un posto non trascurabile tra i grafici italiani del secolo scorso.
