L’auteur composa cet ouvrage, en prison, après l’exécution de Robespierre (le texte est daté du 25 brumaire an 3). Dans cet écrit qui est plus qu’une suite d’une précédente brochure ("Causes secrètes … "), Vilate qui avait été l’un des membres les plus actifs au Tribunal révolutionnaire comme juré, tente de se justifier. Il minimise son rôle et charge les principaux responsables du Tribunal. Il ne parvint pas à sauver sa tête par cet écrit. Avec Fouquier-Tinville et les autres membres du Tribunal révolutionnaire, il fut jugé, condamné à mort et guillotiné le 7 mai 1795. (Martin & Walter, 33569. Tourneux, I, 4302). Quelques piqûres éparses. Bon exemplaire.‎
