Manuscript Letter Signed from the Spanish Consulate in Gibraltar to the Governor General of Cuba Discussing Cargo and Shipping
Gibraltar 1828. Good. 3pp. on a bifolium. Previously folded with separations. Tanned somewhat brittle. An interesting example of official communications concerning trade between colonial Cuba and the Spanish mainland. In this manuscript letter date March 14 1828 the new Spanish Vice Consul in Gibraltar writes to the Governor General of Cuba concerning several topics. These include the regulation of shipping to Cuba and by implication the rest of the Caribbean through Gibraltar particularly of French ships leaving Mediterranean ports. Also discussed is keeping track of individuals particularly merchants going to Cuba by means of identification papers and other documents. The consul also reminds the colonial government of the importance of documenting duties and tariffs paid for shipping cargo and goods. unknown

Mexico City: May 13 1796. About very good. Broadside 17 x 12.25 inches. Old fold lines. Slight separation and loss at center fold slightly affecting a few letters. Minor wear else. Proclamation made by the Viceroy of New Spain authorizing trade between Cuba and the United States. The Caribbean was in tumult in the 1790s with Toussaint L'Ouverture overthrowing the French colonial government and outlawing slavery. Likewise in Cuba there was a similar revolt against slavery demanding abolition and equality -- both revolutions were of substantial concern to slaveholders in the American South. Specifically the present decree mentions flour and other vital foodstuffs as a measure against shortages in Cuba intended to prevent further trouble. "Para precaver la escasez de viveres y con especialidad de harinas que verosimilmente causaria la guerra concedio El Rey Permiso por Real Orden de 25 Junio de 93. para que los Anglo-Americanos.pudiesen conducirlos a la Havana pagando los derechos los puertos habilitados de España." The Viceroy at the time was Don Miguel de la Grua Talamanca de Carini y Branciforte First Marques de Branciforte. The Marques was notoriously corrupt even for colonial Spain having gained position through marriage to the Prime Minister's sister. He made sure to make some profit on everything that passed through his hands including taking advantage of the War in Cuba to remove the French from their lands and sell them to his benefit. A Letter to a Member of Parliament, Concerning the Importance of our Sugar-Colonies to Great Britain. By a Gentleman, who resided many Years in the Island of Jamaica.
First and only edition, [2], 30pp., stitched as issued in blue paper wrappers, a very good copy. The author argues against putting an additional duty on sugar "which... would be a great hardship on the sugar-planter in the West Indies, and very little benefit to the revenue...". He sets out all the costs involved in producing sugar, such as the price of slaves and the cost of keeping them, the higher freight costs, insurance, cost of animals and contributions to the defence force. Finally, he states the advantages of the sugar trade for Britain and shows how an additional duty would be to the detriment of the trade. This is one of the early books on May 1 in Turkey printed by the Turkish Revolutionary Workers' Confederation of Trade Unions. Cover art illustrated by Turkish painter Orhan Taylan 1941-. In the Ottoman Empire the first celebration of Labour Day was organized in Skopje in 1909. In Istanbul Labour Day was first celebrated in 1912. No celebrations could be organized between 1928 and 1975. On 1 May 1976 the Confederation of Revolutionary Trade Unions of Turkey DISK organized a rally on Taksim Square with mass participation one year ago "Bloody First May" which was an attack on leftist demonstrators on 1 May 1977 International Workers' Day in Taksim Square Istanbul Turkey. This booklet was printed for the commemoration of this celebration. Orhan Taylan was born in Samsun to an artist mother in 1941. Graduated from Robert College 1960 and the Fine Arts Academy of Rome 1965. First solo painting exhibition in 1968. Took leading positions in artists' organizations 1975-1978. Organized mural painting symposiums and executed several murals 1976-80. His paintings were exhibited in London Amsterdam and Moscow within Turkish Highlights exhibitions between 1988 and 1990. Aside from regular exhibitions in Istanbul and Ankara his works were also shown in solo gallery exhibitions in Paris New York Geneva and Athens. Orhan Taylan exhibits mainly figurative oil paintings and occasionally metal sculptures and drawings. Lives and works in Istanbul. During the 1971 Military coup taken in custody on summer midnight together with his wife and cartoonist Tan Oral. All his archives and hundreds of books destroyed. 1977 Group exhibitions in Paris and Berlin. Comme fonctionnaire au Bureau des Tailles d'Angoulême, Léonard Antoine du Tillet de Villars (1738-1809) fut l'un des premiers défenseurs de la nécessité d'établir un cadastre national, unique et centralisé afin de réformer l'impôt, sa répartition, le calcul de l'assiette et la perception, vers plus de justice fiscale. Le cadastre servira, par ailleurs, d'outil statistique pour mesurer de la richesse du royaume et de sa population et comme tel permettra d'évaluer les facteurs favorables à la puissance de l'Etat. Turgot qui ne partageait pas le point de vue centralisateur de Tillet du Villars le démît de ses fonctions. Cette étude constitua une source théorique de première importance pour Gracchus Babeuf, organisateur de la "conjuration des Égaux" et précurseur du communisme (cf. V. Daline, 'G. "Nouvelle édition, revue & corrigée", parue un an après l'originale de cet ouvrage présenté comme une traduction de l’anglais, mais en fait œuvre en propre de l’abbé J.-B. Dubos L'auteur exhorte Angleterre à rester en dehors de la guerre de succession d'Espagne, à développer sa marine et à favoriser ses échanges commerciaux. Il analyse en détail les routes et marchandises échangées entre l’Angleterre et le reste du monde (Espagne et Portugal, Amérique, Guinée, France et Pays-Bas, Allemagne et Hollande, Méditerranée, etc.) en appuyant son analyse sur des statistiques chiffrées. L’ouvrage est célèbre pour prophétiser que les colonies britanniques d’Amérique se révolteraient un jour contre leur maître et acquérir leur indépendance. Historien, diplomate et habile négociateur, Dubos prit une part importante aux négociations de plusieurs traités de la période. Cet ouvrage, probablement de commande, a été réalisé sur ordre du gouvernement français qui avait fourni des renseignements alors inédits. (Einaudi, 1626. Goldsmiths, 'Online Catalog', 4038. Baron Pierre Charles Fran?ois Dupin (178-1873) was a French Catholic mathematician, engineer, economist and politician, particularly known for work in the field of mathematics. In 1816, after some difficulty, Dupin was allowed to visit Great Britain to study its commerce and industry. This work is the result which placed him in the foremost rank of statisticians. "In the following work, I have endeavoured to exhibit the full extent of the Military and Naval Forces which the government of Great Britain can bring into the field, or launch upon the ocean... My observations on these subjects were derived from a residence of five years in England; during which time I was constantly employed in visiting and viewing every object and institution worthy of notice relative to the British Army and Navy." Small folio late 19th century marbled boards cloth spine slightly abraded; original blue printed wrappers bound in; blindstamp of the Boston Public Library on the first page; unopened. The July 1858 issue of "Annales du Commerce Exterieur". The immediate cause of the 1857 panic was the failure of the New York branch of the Ohio Life Insurance and Trust Co. a major financial force that collapsed following widespread embezzlement. Others causes included the removal of funds from U.S. banks by British investors which raised questions about the overall U.S. economy. The fall of grain prices which spread economic misery into rural areas. The collapse of land speculation programs that depended on new rail routes ruining thousands of investors. Investor confidence was further shaken in mid-September when 30000 pounds of gold were lost at sea in a shipment from the San Francisco Mint to eastern banks. The gold and SS Central America sank during the North Carolina Hurricane of 1857. Public confidence in the government's ability to back its paper currency with specie was shaken as well. Eventually the panic and depression spread to Europe South America and the Far East. No recovery was evident in the United States for a year and a half and the full impact did not dissipate until the Civil War. The South was hurt less than the other regions of the country and many there concluded that the superiority of their economic system had been vindicated this has been posited as a contributing factor to the secession of many of the Southern States resulting in the Civil War. Pages 57-62 outline the trade between France and the United States during the years 1856-1857 with a retrospective look at past trade.
