‎[Spain] [England] [Trade] [Political] [War of Jenkins Ear]‎

‎Popular Prejudices Against the Convention and Treaty with Spain Examin'd and Answer'd. With Remarks On a Pamphlet Entitled Considerations upon the Present State of Our Affairs at home and Abroad‎

‎London: Printed by T. Cooper 1739. First Edition. Wraps. Fair. Disbound trimmed wraps. Approx. 7.5" x 5". 30 pages 1. Front wrap mostly detached. Pages 29 30 and the rear wrap have a small chip upper edge resulting in loss of a couple of letters.

This pamphlet was published shortly before "The War of Jenkins Ear" with Spain. Contents cover trade issues in the new American colonies; sale of "Negroes"; Native Americans; European countries etc.

Sabin 64143. From wikipedia:

The War of Jenkins' Eara was fought by Great Britain and Spain between 1739 and 1748. The majority of the fighting took place in New Granada and the Caribbean Sea with major operations largely ended by 1742. It is considered a related conflict of the 1740 to 1748 War of the Austrian Succession. The name derives from Robert Jenkins a British sea captain whose earb was allegedly severed in April 1731 by Spanish coast guards searching his ship for contraband. In 1738 opposition politicians in the British Parliament used the incident to incite support for a war against Spain.2

The most significant operation of the war was a failed British attack on Cartagena in 1741 which resulted in heavy casualties and was not repeated.3 Apart from minor actions in Spanish Florida Georgia and Havana after 1742 Britain and Spain focused their efforts on the War of the Austrian Succession in Europe. First edition. a-b2 B-Z4. i-x 1-176. 186 pp. Diplomatic messages with the USA on pages 19-144. One full-page engraved map titled "Route of the Egyptian Army under Ahmed Pasha on a Slaving Expedition February 1843" by Standidge and Co. p. 169. Later black half morocco binding over black cloth with five raised bands forming six compartments on spine with gilt-lettered title in second and fourth compartments and date in sixth with the binder's ticker of Monastery Hill Bindery on back pastedown

Important documents letters and reports regarding Great Britain's efforts to curtail the African slave trade across the globe including over 100 pages of diplomatic cables with the USA.

"Class D. Correspondence" referred to diplomatic letters between the Foreign Office and nations that had not signed treaties with Great Britain regarding the slave trade. Every year from 1830 to 1859 this correspondence was presented to both Houses of Parliament and published: this is the annual compendium covering the year 1843. And though the importation of slaves was illegal in the United States at that time there is a considerable amount of American-British interaction. Great Britain had abolished slavery in toto throughout its colonies in 1834 after the passage of the Abolition Act of 1833. It had been home to a powerful abolition movement that held influence in government for some time prior. Great Britain's economy had grew less dependent on slavery than its rivals like the US were and slave revolts on its far-flung colonies had been costly to put down. Those reasons coupled with domestic religious and social sentiment had led the British Empire to take action. Insistent British diplomatic correspondence is included here with other key major powers who had not yet signed on to trying to halt the slave trade.

‎[TRADE AND DIPLOMACY IN 1930S JAPAN]‎

‎Japanese Business Card Album‎

‎Japan. circa1939. 103 name or business cards mounted on 17 window-faced card leaves a little faded and a few tears in an album 26.2 x 18.3 cm; green linen boards gilt decorated spine a little chipped and rubbed but in remarkable original condition. An album of Japanese name cards collected in the late 1930s apparently by Bruce Rogers who held a post at the University of Oregon. The name cards which are organized roughly in alphabetical order in a purpose-made album offer a fascinating insight into the network of contacts of a western resident in prewar Japan. They include cards presented to Rogers by journalists academics businesspeople diplomats and others. Though quite a number of his contacts are Americans or other foreigners the majority are Japanese. There are three cards from George Albert Makinson 1886-1972 and his wife presented at the time when Makinson was US Consul General in Osaka a post he took up in1938 and a card presented by Parliamentary Lower House member Honda Yoshinari 1871-1952. Some of the cards include inscriptions thanking Rogers for hospitality and one particularly interesting one is inscribed with a message of introduction from a Japanese acquaintance asking for Rogers to be allowed to be present during an air-raid drill in Tokyo an omen of the approaching war. . hardcover‎
