‎Paris: D.Guilmard 1845. First edition Oblong quarto 10 x 7 inches. Title page plus the complete complement of 123 full page lithographs of French furniture. Although not stated in OCLC. this cops copy has 5 bis plates for no. 22 and one bis plate for no. 66. Publisher's blind ruled brown cloth gilt gilt cover lettering. marbled endpapers From hinge nicely repaired but still with a chip to the loer gutter margin of the marled endpapers. The text block is quite clean. A handsome copy of a wonderful trace catalog. There were 3 or 4 editions of this catalog and the only way of telling the difference is by the plate count which has by far the most number of plates. And this copy has even more as no cataloger have ever mentioned the bis plates. Only 5 of this edition located by OCLC all with no mention of any bis plates. "Little is known about the life of the Parisian publisher of Le Garde-meuble Désiré Guilmard c. 1810-c.1885 except that he founded the publishing firm of D. Guilmard in 1839. Because his name appears as the "delineator" of the majority of the furniture plates in Le Garde-meuble many historians presumed he was a furniture designer. However he is not known to have had a furniture shop nor are there any signed examples of his furniture extant. We do know that Guilmard was closely connected to the Parisian design community and through his numerous publications see below became an influential purveyor of taste. He was also an exceptionally able businessman who promoted French furniture and design during a fifty-year period of rapidly changing taste" Smithsonian. D.Guilmard hardcover‎

‎(Trade Catalogue: Iron & Steel)‎

‎Price List and Catalogue of the Pacific Rolling Mill Company Manufacturers of Iron and Steel. Seventh Edition‎

‎San Francsico California: Pacific Rolling Mill Company 1890. 8vo. 250 x 170 mm. 10 x 7 inches. 100 pp. plus 4 leaves of ruled paper 2 with measurements in manuscript. Illustrated throughout with simple drawings of parts many stenciled with green wash; one plate folding. Bound in limp cloth covered boards title in gilt on front cover; a cloth binding shows some wear to gilt title two pencil drawings on front endpaper; other a very good sound copy. Straight forward price list of iron bar steel rail rolled and forged metal axles nuts bolts washers and dozens of other metal products. There is no introduction about the history of the firm just images of parts prices and a few lines of text describing specifications for some of the more complicated manufacture items. What distinguishes this rare trade catalogue is the design sense of many of the images and the application of stenciled color to highlight the object. The printed form of the parts are in outline and as one pages through the catalogue the images take on an abstract quality. Metal parts become contoured shapes with form being determined only by the light green wash applied to the physical part of the design. Although unintentional I am sure this late 19th century publication replete with many of the characteristics of period book design exhibits a very modernist feel one that is most unusual in publications of this nature. Although called the 7th edition this is only one of three issues of the PRMC's product guide and price list that is known. Organized in 1867 PRMC grew continuously and by 1892 was producing more than 40 thousand tons of iron and steel. "This giant enterprise is so closely identified with the manufacturing interests of the Pacific Coast that there is scarcely a manufacturing firm or corporation on the Coast that does not depend upon its output. The mills are located at Potrero Point in South San Francisco and cover an immense area" Master Hands. Romaine Guide to American Trade Catalogues p. 200 this edition and one from 1886 both known in only one copy each at California Historical Society. OCLC cites an edition from 1885 in one copy at San Francisco Public Library and this edition 1890 also in only one copy at California H. S. See: Master Hands in the Affairs of the Pacific Coast Historical Biographical and Descriptive. A Resumé of the Builders of Our Material Progress. A very good copy.Comes with 3 price lists dated 1924 2 printed ink blotters 3 self-addressed envelopes 6 copies of the Contract and 4 sheets of letterhead paper featuring the Sphinx. In 1835 the world's richest deposit of white crystalline marble was discovered in the area of Georgia then known as "Long Swamp Valley." As quarries moved into the area it soon became known as Marble Hill. Around 1880 the greater world became aware of these rich deposits and soon sought to take them over. Early in the 20th century Frank H. Sidall and H.C. Clement both Northerners looking to make some money in the "New South" created the Georgia Marble Company. By 1916 the Georgia Marble Company had purchased the Southern Marble and Stone Company and four more plant facilities at Marble Hill Nelson Ball Ground and Marietta. With the final purchase in 1941 of the Georgia Marble Finishing Works at Canton the Georgia Marble Company had achieved a virtual monopoly of this excellent supply of top-tier marble. Although it was purchased by a Canadian multinational company in 2003 the Georgia Marble Company continues to be the world's largest producer of marble products. ‎New York : Veedee Manufacturing Company 1904. First edition of the trade catalog marketing a vibrator which they unfortunately entitled "The Veedee." Small octavo. 16 pp. including 6 pages of photographic illustrations of the device itself and its various methods of application. Publisher' printed red wrappers. Lower tip of rear wrapper with a very small piece excised else a very good copy.As often the case with promotional material this pamphlet starts off with many laudatory reviews: "What a gigantic thrill"; "I'd rather have a vibration treatment than eat": "It simply thrills the pain out of you." Then comes the litany of ills that this wonder device will do away with; deafness influenza asthma. kidney disease rheumatism gout paralysis sciatica etc. A fun chapter is called "A Pleasant Sensation." From the illustrations it appears to be a hand-held device you would crank to provide the "vibrations." OCLC locates zero copies. Veedee Manufacturing Company unknown‎

‎The Werner Speed Wagon and Speed Sleigh. Built by George Werner Buffalo New York. Exhibited at Pan-American Exposition Buffalo 1901.‎

‎Buffalo NY: George Werner 1901. First edition Oblong quarto. 12 pp. Printed on rectos only. Illustrated. Publisher's string-tied blue wrappers lettered in silver. Very good; no real issues. This pamphlet is composed of two illustrations of Werner's Speed Wagons one in color and the remaining pages tout the excellence of his vehicles. The first wagon shown is labeled No. 2: Regular Speed Wagon and the second is labeled No. 3; Speed Wagon on Wheels. Presumably George had already retired No. 1 in all three copies located by OCLC there are six leaves present as here. Werner's speed wagons could probably outrun any vehicle on a 1901 road. They had tubular steel running gear wire wheels and pneumatic tires. George Werner founded the family carriage business soon after the Civil War and produced vehicles for wealthy Buffalonians until 1904. George Werner unknown‎

‎(TRADE CATALOG: GAMES)‎

‎The West & Lee Game and Printing Co.'s Illustrated Catalogue of Chivalrie with Rules of the Game.‎

‎Worcester: The West & Lee Game and Printing Co. 1874. First edition. Small octavo. 31 1 pp. plus five foldout engravings of people playing the games numerous textual illustrations of required equipment. Publisher's printed light sage wrappers. A couple of chips to the lower corner of rear wrappers one of the foldouts with a tear at the fold-line light spine erosion. But a very good copy of this very ephemeral piece. Game rules seem to have had short life spans. There is no history or definition of this game but from reading the catalog it seems to be a variety of croquet. But instead of simple hoops this game used very elaboarate and expensive pieces. Castles that actually look like castles for example. This was an expensive piece of advertising and surely was meant more as a promotional than as a catalog. A yard game for the well heeled. The West & Lee Game and Printing Co. unknown‎

‎(TRADE CATALOG: HAIR JEWELRY)‎

‎Trade Cataloge of Hair Jewelry with Over 400 Offerings.‎

‎N.p.: N.p. ca. `975. Presumed first edition. Oblong quarto 11 1/8 x 8 inches. 29 leaves paginated with no gaps and printed on rectos only bearing 466 patterns. No title page but nonetheless a remarkable display of Victorian hair jewelry. Most often used to connote mourning but were used for other purposes as well. Extremely popular in the mid to late 19th century and then all but forgotten. Front blank with old two-inch cellotape repair to leaf 8. Contemporary sand-grain blue cloth with blind stamped borders but no lettering. A bit loose in the binding. Hair jewelry catalogs seldom come up.Hair was fashioned into a piece that was braided woven or otherwise worked into a form and a design. Brooches bracelets earrings watch fobs and rings could be made from hair. While it is impossible to declare with any certainty we find in the catalog of hair jewelry by Charles T. Menge of New York ca. 1875 exactly the same twining borders and two pieces that are a definite match. Of course copying was probably rampant then but an interesting tidbit nonetheless as this would make it an American company rather than a British one. N.p. hardcover‎

‎BATHROOMS OF CHARACTER Bound Together With PORCELAIN FIXTURES FOR KITCHEN AND LAUNDRY‎

‎
A fine copy of a rare trade catalogue issued by the Trenton Potteries Company. Decorative wrappers bound in dos-a-dos style tied with two silk twists one olive green one ochre. "Bathrooms of Character" has 40 pages beautifully illustrated with plans for creating a stylish bathroom. The cover design features a background in olive green squares outlined in white suggesting tiles with title letters in a raised white Arts and Crafts font. Embellishments of "tiles" with soft ochre stylized irises and foliage complete the handsome composition. The pamplet's counterpart "Porcelain Fixtures For Kitchen and Laundry" has 31 pages also nicely illustrated. Its cover design is identical to that of the bathroom pamphlet reversing the use of colors with ochre squares outlined in white and the iris designs executed in olive green. The text presents a wide array of superior qualities of the products including "Your Maid Will Find Cleaning Easy". It attests to shared contemporary frustrations "Every woman has had experience with the "servant problem". Dimensions and prices are included. This is the sixth edition of a booklet that was updated beginning circa 1914. Advertisements for the brochures were carried by some of the most prestigious periodicals of the day including House Beautiful Country Life and The Fra. Very scarce indeed particularly in fine condition and retaining the original postal envelope addressed in this case to "Gladys Drinkwater 1124 St. Vincent Street Utica N.Y." The envelope has a pencil date of 10/21/21 as well as the original three cent purple George Washington stamp canceled.
Trenton Pottery Co. paperback‎

Vento agrees with Coyer's insistence on the development of industry and trade but disagrees that this should (also) be a task of the nobility. 'Sans partager l'opinion de Coyer, l'auteur de La Noblesse Commerçante, Vento admet cependant la nécessité de développer le commerce, et expose quelques moyens aptes à le favoriser. En outre, Vento juge le célibat des prêtres et des officiers nécessaire, raison qui etaye encore sa théorie selon la noblesse ne doit pas déroger en s'occupant de commerce' (INED).‎
