First, only and extremely rare Ottoman Turkish translation and 'Bulaq Edition' of this account of Napoleon described as 'Extrait du Memorial de Sainte-Helene. The Bulaq or El-Amiriya Press is the first official and governmental printing press to be established in Egypt, and function according to industrial printing basis, causing not just a qualitative but also a quantitative and knowledgeable leap in science throughout the Arab region. The Bulaq Press was part of Mohamed Aly's inclusive development plans for the modernization of Egypt. The Khedive first initiated his plans by establishing a strong Egyptian army; one that is capable of strengthening his grip on the country. It thus became essential that this army be provided with the necessary instructive and educational books and material, by which to learn military plans and techniques, as well as the different types of artillery and laws that define a soldier's duties and rights. A pressing need eventually developed for establishing a governmental press; one that should provide such material. By 1815 CE., Mohamed Aly initiated the process of bringing the art of printing to Egypt by sending the first official delegation, headed by Nicole El Masabki, to Milan in Italy, to learn the principles of printing. The same delegation was later able to return and establish the first official press in Egypt. This rare and unusual book published and printed in Bulaq Press shortly after the foundation of the printing house. After his final defeat at Waterloo and his subsequent second exile, Napoleon Bonaparte spent 10 weeks on board the HMS Northumberland as it sailed him to the far-flung reaches of the South Atlantic. His destination was St. Helena, a small and windswept island under British control. Almost 2000 kilometers west of Africa, St. Helena measured only 122 square kilometers (47 square miles) - half the size of his former home-in-exile, Elba. His intended home, Longwood, was not finished by the time he arrived and so Bonaparte stayed with a British family - the Balcombes- at their residence The Briars. He made a great friend of the family's younger daughter Betsy and the pair got on famously. Napoleon was given very few privileges. Once he met a slave and desired to free him, the English government denied his request on the grounds that he was trying to align with the slaves and start an insurrection. Napoleon spent most of his days dictating his memoirs to his generals, reading plays, novels, and the latest books from Europe that his captors would allow him. He spent six years there, though there are really only anecdotes to describe his life at the time, which, for the most part, carry expressions of loneliness and boredom. Extremely rare. Francois Marquis de Chasseloup-Laubat 1754-1833 was a French general who fought in the French Revolution and was chief of engineers in the army of Italy under Napoleon. He led the seiges of Maastricht Milan and Mantua. He reconstructed the defences of northern Italy during the peace of 1800-1805 during which time he constructed the great fortress of Alessandria on the Tanaro. He then served in the Polish and German campaigns where he directed the siege of Danzig and reconstructed many fortresses. Napoleon praised Chasseloup as one of his best generals.<br/>The detailed plates at the end of the work give plans for cannon and fortifications as well as designs for a portable bridge a well a sawmill and other instruments of war. <br/>Scarce; OCLC locates only 5 copies. Quarto modern three-quarter crimson morocco gilt raised bands olive morocco spine labels marbled boards. $2600.Early edition of this military officer's ""historical sketches"" of Napoleon and his contemporaries with frontispiece portrait and 45 fine engravings depicting scenes from Napoleon's life and career printed on papier de Chine and mounted handsomely bound.Auguste de Chambure was a colorful and charismatic officer who served throughout the Napoleonic wars; his name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe. After being commissioned as a sous-lieutenant in 1806 at the age of 17 Chambure served in Prussia and Poland where he was wounded. In 1809 he fought in Spain where he was wounded at the Siege of Saragossa. Later that year he was promoted to lieutenant; the next year hebecame an aide-de-camp to his brother-in-law General Reynaud and he served at the Siege of Ciudad Rodrigo. His next major action came in May of 1811 when he fought at the Battle of Fuentes de Oñoro where his right shoulder was shattered. In 1812 he returned to the army and in February of 1813 he was promoted to captain and joined General Rapp's staff. Rapp was in charge of defending Danzig and Chambure served in the defense once the Coalition powers laid siege to it. He promptly made a name for himself by leading a company of volunteers known as the Infernal Company or the Lost Children in brilliant actions behind enemy lines but in December 1813 they were forced to surrender Danzig and Chambure was taken prisoner. After returning to France in 1814 after Napoleon's abdication Chambure became an aide-de-camp to General Reynaud again. When Napoleon left exile and resumed power for the Hundred Days Chambure rallied to him. In 1820 he received a pension as captain but in 1830 he resumed his military career working for Marshal Soult.The 46 fine illustrations in this volume were engraved by Fauchery Alfred et Tony Johannot and others after designs by Devéria Steuben Scheffer Lami and others: ""Our first idea was to erect a monument which could attest to foreign nations the superiority of our school of engraving and ensure for each of our artists the degree of renown deserved for his talent"" Chambure's foreword translated.
