Send General Pacthod to the Army of Naples where he can serve.""</p></blockquote><p>In May 1810 Napoleon was at the high-water mark of his empire strengthening and intensifying his Continental System against Britain. Napoleon focused then on restricting British commerce and enhancing his alliance with Austria. His mind was also much on the Netherlands. On May 13 1810 it was announced that the Netherlands were formally annexed to France further consolidating Napoleon’s control over Europe. Bergen op Zoom a fortified city in the Netherlands was a key stronghold for French forces during Napoleon’s empire.</p><p>By 1810 Napoleon controlled most of the Italian peninsula acting as King of Italy crowned 1805 with his stepson Eugène de Beauharnais as viceroy. The region was restructured into the Kingdom of Italy in the north and the Kingdom of Naples in the south introducing modern law abolishing feudal rights and improving infrastructure while by 1810 the Italian army achieved parity with French units.</p><p>The War of the Fifth Coalition was Austria’s final attempt to challenge Napoleon Bonaparte after earlier defeats but it ended decisively with French victories at Battle of Wagram and the Treaty of Schönbrunn which stripped Austria of further territory and influence in northern Italy and the Adriatic. In the aftermath Napoleon moved to tighten and rationalize his control over the region reinforcing the authority of his Italian client state under Eugène de Beauharnais and integrating Venice more fully into a centralized military-administrative system. Though already under French rule Venice’s strategic importance—as a fortified lagoon city naval arsenal and forward position facing Austria—meant that after 1809 it became a focus of consolidation rather than conquest with garrisons reviewed command structures regularized and trusted officers installed to ensure the city’s security and readiness in anticipation of future conflict.</p><p>Napoleon was at Bergen op Zoom in May 1810. The Duc de Feltre was an officer diplomat and statesman who served as Minister of War under Napoleon.</p><p><strong>Letter signed</strong> Bergen-op-Zoom May 9 1810 to the Duc de Feltre assigning officers to the army and government of Italy. <em>""I approve the slate of officers you propose to use for the Army of Italy. General Jacques-François de Menou served as the administrator and Governor of Venice in the Kingdom of Italy. After a notable career including commanding the Egyptian campaign he died on August 13 1810. Hegira: 1260 = Gregorian: 144. First only and extremely rare Ottoman Turkish translation and 'Bulaq Edition' of this account of Napoleon described as 'Extrait du Memorial de Sainte-Helene. The Bulaq or El-Amiriya Press is the first official and governmental printing press to be established in Egypt and function according to industrial printing basis causing not just a qualitative but also a quantitative and knowledgeable leap in science throughout the Arab region. The Bulaq Press was part of Mohamed Aly's inclusive development plans for the modernization of Egypt. The Khedive first initiated his plans by establishing a strong Egyptian army; one that is capable of strengthening his grip on the country. It thus became essential that this army be provided with the necessary instructive and educational books and material by which to learn military plans and techniques as well as the different types of artillery and laws that define a soldier's duties and rights. A pressing need eventually developed for establishing a governmental press; one that should provide such material. By 1815 CE. Mohamed Aly initiated the process of bringing the art of printing to Egypt by sending the first official delegation headed by Nicole El Masabki to Milan in Italy to learn the principles of printing. The same delegation was later able to return and establish the first official press in Egypt. This rare and unusual book published and printed in Bulaq Press shortly after the foundation of the printing house. After his final defeat at Waterloo and his subsequent second exile Napoleon Bonaparte spent 10 weeks on board the HMS Northumberland as it sailed him to the far-flung reaches of the South Atlantic. His destination was St. Helena a small and windswept island under British control. Almost 2000 kilometers west of Africa St. Helena measured only 122 square kilometers 47 square miles - half the size of his former home-in-exile Elba. His intended home Longwood was not finished by the time he arrived and so Bonaparte stayed with a British family - the Balcombes- at their residence The Briars. He made a great friend of the family's younger daughter Betsy and the pair got on famously. Napoleon was given very few privileges. Once he met a slave and desired to free him the English government denied his request on the grounds that he was trying to align with the slaves and start an insurrection. Napoleon spent most of his days dictating his memoirs to his generals reading plays novels and the latest books from Europe that his captors would allow him. He spent six years there though there are really only anecdotes to describe his life at the time which for the most part carry expressions of loneliness and boredom. Extremely rare. ‎19/12/1808. <blockquote><p>A letter never before offered for sale acquired from the direct US-based descendants of the recipient; it does not appear in the published works of Napoleon or online at the Fondation Napoleon</p><p> </p><p>Napoleon's letters mentioning the surrender at Bailen are great rarities and we have not seen one having been sold publicly</p></blockquote><p>The Battle of Bailén was fought in 1808 between the Spanish Army of Andalusia led by General Francisco Javier Castaños and the Imperial French Army's II corps d'observation de la Gironde under General Pierre Dupont de l'Étang. This battle was the first open-field defeat of a Napoleonic army. The heaviest fighting took place near Bailén sometimes anglicized Baylen a village by the Guadalquivir River in the Jaén province of southern Spain.</p><p>The defeat was total. Dupont surrendered all his forces those who were not killed instead of fighting his way out. Napoleon considered it a great treachery the biggest blow to his ego to date. Apart from the blow to French prestige Bailén threw the French invasion forces—faltering after their failure to secure Gerona Zaragoza Valencia Barcelona and Santander and with the country rapidly arming and mobilizing against them—into panic and disarray. With the sudden loss of 20000 troops Napoleon's military machine abruptly fell apart and had to be put back together.</p><p>The fate of the prisoners was tragic in most cases. Dupont had surrendered with the understanding that his men would be allowed back to France. But his Spanish opponents once the surrender occurred did not honor the agreement and instead most of the 20000 or so captured were sent west and ended on vessels the vast majority eventually dying. A few among them Dupont were sent back to France to Rochefort and from there made their way back to the front lines to be incorporated into the ranks.</p><p>General Mouton the Count of Lobau was a prominent general and later Marshall of the Empire for Napoleon. Mouton means ""lamb"" in French the source of Napoleon's now famous statement on Mouton: ""My lamb is a lion."" Napoleon valued Mouton to the extent that for his great Russia campaign he made him senior aide to camp. In 1806 Mouton was a Brigade General. He would remain in Napoleon's service until the end of the Empire during which time he showed himself to be forthright direct “he's no fawner†Napoleon is noted to have said but also disciplined loyal meticulous and highly organized. He was at Austerlitz with Napoleon and was charged with the preparation of the campaigns in Spain 1808 Russia 1812 Germany 1813 and Belgium 1815. Napoleon also wrote “Mouton is the best colonel to have ever commanded a French regiment.â€</p><p><strong>Letter signed</strong> Chamartin Madrid December 19 1808 to General Mouton. <em>""There are at Retiro 4 depots of isolated men one from the 1st corps one from 4th one from the 6th and another of isolated French prisoners of Dupont's corps which is returning.
