An extraordinary letter of historic significance written a mere two days after the Treaty of Fontainebleau of April 11 1814 which set the terms of Napoleon's abdication and ended an era. Dupont had been one of Napoleon's most distinguished generals but his surrender in the disastrous Spanish campaign led to disgrace and imprisonment. After the fall of Napoléon Dupont became Minister of War for Louis XVIII and in just such letters as this to Marshal Victor - one of Napoleon's most trusted generals - negotiated the acquiescence of Napoléon's military leaders: in translation "Monsieur le Maréchal; - The provisional government has read with intense interest the declaration in which your Excellency has announced his adherence to the act of the Senate pronouncing the abdication of Napoleon Buonaparte and the restoration of the Bourbons on the throne on their ancestors. By this declaration taken in the interest of the country your Excellency has established anew a claim to the gratitude of the French people as well as the respect and good will of His Majesty Louis XVIII. Such is the opinion sir of the provisional government - and I am more than happy to be its messenger on this memorable occasion". unknown

First edition in English of this sarcastic and slanderous portrayal of Napoleon with 16 full-page engraved portraits most by William Read. Madame Laure Junot wife of French general and diplomat Jean-Andoche Junot was a firsthand witness to many of the intrigues of the consulate. She immediately entered into the gay life of Paris and became "noted for her beauty her caustic wit and her extravagance. Napoleon nicknamed her petite peste but treated her and Junot with the utmost generosity a fact which did not restrain her sarcasms and slanders in her portrayal of him in her Memoirs" Robert Ouvrard. Eine Vielzahl an Hochstaplern gaben sich als Kronprätendenten aus, Naundorff war aber tatsächlich der relativ erfolgreichste. <p><strong>Order of Exercises at the Musical Festival In Honor of Prince Napoleon and Princess Clothilde at The Music Hall on Wednesday September 25th 1861 Commencing at 5 o'clock P.M.</strong></p><p>Boston: J.E. Farwell & Co. printers 1861 octavo 3 1 pp. printed program. With unused ticket of admission to the Festival measuring 3 ¾ x 5 inches rare ephemeral items.</p><p>The American visit of Emperor Napoleon II's cousin Prince Napoleon nick named Plon Plon five months after the start of the Civil War was ostensibly unofficial. But after a disastrous White House meeting with President Lincoln whom the Prince thought stupid and graceless Napoleon crossed the Confederate lines to the Virginia headquarters of rebel General G. T. Beauregard whose cosmopolitan manners were more to his taste. Traveling back to the north before his departure the Prince's Confederate sympathies were only thinly disguised though not as manifest as a spurious letter attributed to him in southern newspapers blaming the War on northern "obstinacy … prodigality and avarice… political fanaticism and egotistical speculations." After his secret meeting with the rebel General possibly to discuss French support for the rebellion – or even the Emperor's plan to occupy Mexico – the pudgy Prince had to endure this "musical festival" at which a chorus of no less than 1200 Boston school children serenaded him with the Star Spangled Banner.</p>

N. Sarony 1895. 1895. Very good. - An original 4-3/8 inch high by 3 inch wide black & white photograph of the English stage actor John Glendinning by Napoleon Sarony. The image portrays the actor in profile from the knees up attired in a long checkered coat over white shirt and tie an aptly named trilby hat on his head. A pipe is held with its bowl upside down in the tall bearded actor's mouth. The photograph is mounted onto a 6-1/2 inch high by 4-1/4 inch wide cream mount with maroon rules. The photographer's credits "From negative copyright 1895 by N. Sarony" are printed on the mount under the photograph and the actor's signature is penned below. There is a tiny chip to the bottom right edge of the mount with 2 perforated holes at the top. Very good. <p>The English actor John Glendinning 1857-1916 made his first appearance at the age of 17 at the Theatre Royal in Greenock Scotland. He performed om New York in "The Ironmaster" and several other plays. He created the role of the Laird in "Trilby". N. Sarony, (1895). unknown
