Bonaparte Napoleon
Napoleon Announces the Fall of the Last Major Prussian Stronghold After His Victory at Danzig Allowing Him to Turn His Attention to the East and the Russians
In an important letter to his Secretary of War he seeks to defend his flank against the English and Swedish and plant spies in contested areas Napoleon’s dual mindset – confident ego-driven yet practical – can be well seen by reflecting on the fact that although he felt he was destined to rule the Continent and could lay Europe at his feet yet he felt his chances of victory were greatly undermined if he had to fight all three Continental powers at the same time and thus always sought the ability to control the battlefield. The historic victory at Austerlitz dealt Austria a powerful blow but it also awakened Prussia to the danger France could play as it moved closer and closer. A new coalition the Fourth was formed in late 1806 with Prussia and Russia the largest Continental powers. Danzig held an important strategic position. As well as being a key heavily fortified port with 60000 inhabitants at the mouth of the river Vistula it was a direct threat to the French left as it lay within Prussian lands but to the rear of the French army as it advanced eastward. It was also a potential dropping off point for allied troops that could threaten the French army by opening another front to their rear. Danzig was also difficult to attack yet Napoleon felt he had no choice. On March 23 the French batteries opened fire. Russian forces made an attempt between May 10-15 to bring 7000 reinforcements to the city. These and other efforts of the Russians and Prussians failed. Danzig capitulated on May 24 1807. Napoleon then ordered the siege of the nearby Weichselmünde fort and that garrison capitulated shortly afterwards. Napoleon was pinning down the enemy. He wanted his Generals Guillaume-Marie-Anne Brune and Gabriel-Jean-Joseph Molitor to defend Colburg which was in French hands and to protect against English or Swedish attacks but they had not arrived on the scene. Letter signed Finkenstein Palace in Prussia May 28 1807 to General Clarke his Minister of War showing his well-known impatience for Brune and Molitor to arrive so he could proceed with his plans. “I have received your letter of the 25th. I am shocked that Marshal Brune has not yet arrived at Stettin. I presume that Boudet’s division has arrived by now. I have announced to you the taking of Danzig. Weichselmunde has also surrendered such that all is accomplished on this end. We found at Danzig immense extensive stores above all in wheat. The enemy may yet try something to unblock Colberg. It is to Marshal Brune to go to its help. I await news of Molitor’s division. Write to Marshal Kellermann and to the prefects of the Rhine River relative to the prisoners who escaped France. If you can find in Berlin a good agent that could be sent to Koenigberg he might serve as a useful spy. Travel from Berlin by sea can now be done quite quickly and in this season one can travel very rapidly by the Baltic.†Brune and Molitor arrived and the latter was named Governor of Swedish Pomerania as a further buffer. Feeling free Napoleon’s eyes turned to a further advance along the Baltic Sea toward Russia. Less than a month later Napoleon defeated the Russians at Friedland and the Treaty of Tilset which marked the high water mark of Napoleon’s empire unknown

Bonaparte Napoleon
Napoleon Escalates Efforts to Obtain the Parthenon Marbles Arresting Lord Elgin’s Agent in the Acquisition of Those Antiquities and Many Others
We have never seen another letter of Napoleon relating to his quest to acquire classical antiquities The hunt for antiquities by Napoleon was intense and worldwide. At one point Napoleon held the jewels of the Egyptian Empire symbolized by the discovery of the Rosetta Stone. But works of art were for him trophies of his conquests and he sought to bring these global treasures to the Louvre. There is one treasure that Napoleon tried to get but did not: the Elgin Marbles the great sculptures that adorned the Parthenon. There were a large collection of Classical Greek marble sculptures made under the supervision of the architect and sculptor Phidias and his assistants in Ancient Greece. From 1801 to 1812 agents of Thomas Bruce 7th Earl of Elgin removed about half of the surviving sculptures of the Parthenon as well as sculptures from the Propylaea and Erechtheum. The Marbles were transported by sea to Britain. The ongoing war between Britain and France interrupted and challenged the transport of these antiques. When the French and Turks who had power in Greece became friends again it became important for the British to get the Parthenon marbles out of Greece as quickly as possible. Lord Elgin tried to buy a big ship but was unsuccessful and even though he was able to hire several smaller ones the crates were piling up faster then they could export them. To add to his problems his own ship the HMS Mentor with seventeen cases on board including some of the finest sections from the Parthenon freize sank in a storm at the entrance to the harbor of Kythera. With fifty cases still in Piraeus it seemed like half of Elgin’s treasure would have to be left behind. Then on Christmas Eve in 1802 the HMS Braakel ran aground outside Pireaus. To handle many of these challenges Elgin sent his right man and chaplain Phillip Hunt who after the wrecking of the ship carrying the marbles appeared with a small army of Greeks and Albanians and rescued the ship. These made it back to England. It was to Hunt and William Richard Hamilton his private secretary that Elgin gave the primary task of collecting antiquities. The Treaty of Amiens temporarily ended hostilities between France and Britain. It was signed in the city of Amiens on March 25 1802 by Joseph Bonaparte and Marquess Cornwallis as a “Definitive Treaty of Peace.†This peace lasted only one year until May 18 1803 and was the only period of general peace in Europe between 1793 and 1814. After the end of this treaty Napoleon vowed to arrest English citizens traveling through his dominion. But he did so with strategy. In 1803 he arrested Lord Elgin and held him until 1806 with the goal of getting him to give the Emperor his collection. Elgin claimed afterward that he could have obtained his liberty and named any price should he sell to Napoleon his collection of antiques. Elgin and Hunt had separated in 1803 and Hunt was compiling information to later write a memoir of the hunt for antiques. And when Hunt entered French territory or Napoleon realized he had Napoleon expanded his effort to get the Marbles and other antiques. Letter signed St. Cloud May 8 1804 to Minister of War Marshall Berthier. “My intention Citizen Minister is that Mr. Hunt anglican minister attached to Lord Elgin at Orleans be arrested and conducted under secure escort to Fort Bitche where he will be handed over to the Commander.†That this arrest was made at the highest level attests to its importance to Napoleon. We have never seen another letter of Napoleon relating to his quest to acquire classical antiquities unknown

Bonaparte Napoleon
Napoleon Prepares to Host the Ministers of Spain for the Secret Treaty of Fontainebleau
His handwritten accounting of finances for hosting the Ministers there and for the long term restoration of the Palace We have never seen such a handwritten accounting by Napoleon The Treaty of Fontainebleau of 1807 was a secret agreement between Spain and France for the partition of Portugal. In that Treaty Spanish King Charles IV and Napoleon I outlined a proposed conquest and partition of Portugal by Spain and France as part of Napoleon’s ongoing attempt to isolate England. Consisting of twenty-one articles seven of which were secret the treaty divided Portugal into three parts. The north would go to the King of Etruria the grandson of Charles IV; the central provinces would be awarded to Napoleon until a general peace could be concluded; and the south the Algarve would go to Manuel de Godoy Charles’s first minister. At the conclusion of the peace Charles IV would be recognized as emperor of Spanish America. The treaty also allowed a French army of 25000 men and 3000 cavalry to cross Spain into Lisbon with a 40000-troop reserve just north of the Spanish-French border at Bayonne in case of English intervention. The treaty was signed October 27 1807 nine days after a French army crossed into Spain and began its march on Lisbon. Although this treaty permitted French soldiers on Spanish soil legally it was never published and the terms of the division of Portugal remained unfulfilled. The Treaty of Fontainebleau ultimately led to the Napoleonic occupation of Spain the capture of Charles IV and the designation of Napoleon’s brother Joseph Bonaparte as ruler of Spain. Autograph manuscript undated but from early October 1807 headed “â€For Fontainbleau†the rest entirely in Napoleon’s hand clipped perhaps by Napoleon from a larger accounting document. All numbers likely represent French livres tournois. 1° small appartments. 50.000 2° bedding 20.000 3° kitchens 400.000 to make all the kitchens 4° court of ministers des ministres 300.000 to house all the ministers Total of 770.000″ This was sent at the time of another note of Napoleon on October 4 1807 to General Duroc the Grand Marshall of the Royal Palace. In that note he writes he wants to stay in Fontainebleau and that he wants it restored to its former state. He wants the kitchens restored and the project completed in two years unknown

Bonaparte Napoleon
Napoleon Takes Over in Egypt: He Authorizes the Mission of his Famed Future Spy Lascaris of Arabia to Map and Organize Territory Napoleon Hoped to Rule
Lascaris a descendant of Emperor Lascaris and a Knight of Malta would advocate for Egyptian independence before going to Arabia as Napoleon's spy Napoleon’s venture into Egypt is well known. In May 1798 he headed an invasion force of 25000 men in an attempt to seize control of the country from the Mamelukes. His aim apart from Egypt itself was twofold — destroy the Ottoman Empire and gain access to India via the Red Sea with the intention of crushing the British there and taking it over as well. This was after all the man who reputedly said while in Egypt that Europe was not big enough for him. Napoleon got off to a good start in July when at the Battle of the Pyramids he gained a crucial victory that ended centuries of Mamelukes rule in Egypt. Although August brought a defeat at the hands of Lord Nelson at the Battle of Abukir Bay and ended an effort at a quick Middle Eastern conquest Napoleon set about installing an organization in Egypt and also began a campaign of cultural influence. Theodore Lascaris de Vintimille known as Lascaris of Arabia is a figure of great note and entire novels are dedicated to his exploits. In 1798 he sent Lascaris to Egypt to organize Egypt and begin outreach to Egyptians he wanted to rule. Lascaris embarked on a campaign to create an independent A decade after the Egypt incursion Napoleon chose him to unÂdertake a secret campaign among the Bedouin tribes to live among them and learn their ways – over a century before Lawrence of Arabia did the same. This order shows that Lascaris was already working for Napoleon in 1798 and was mapping out and organizing territory. Order Signed Cairo Egypt November 8 1798 authorizing that a commission aimed by the general engineer shall honor “the expenses incurred by “Lascaris architect for the establishment of the offices of administration and recording of the territory.†Napoleon’s dream ended in disaster. His fleet had been destroyed by Nelson at Abukir Bay thus cutting him and his army off. Before long despite a couple of military victories against Ottoman forces he slipped back to France leaving his stranded army at the mercy of the Ottomans and British. In 1801 the remnants of his army were repatriated in British ships unknown
