‎René CAILLIÉ (1799-1838) a réalisé deux exploits dont chacun aurait suffi à immortaliser son auteur, le premier ; atteindre Tombouctou et en revenir vivant et le second, traverser le Sahara du Niger au Maroc. Dès 1816, René CAILLIE s’embarque pour le Sénégal comme domestique d’un officier et il commence à rêver de Tombouctou en lisant les récits de Mungo Park. Après un premier séjour à la Guadeloupe, il regagne l’Afrique et participe en 1818-1819 à la malheureuse expédition du major Gray à la recherche du Mungo Park. De retour au Sénégal en 1824, il séjourne durant près de deux années chez les Maures Brakna, dont il apprend la langue, les coutumes, la religion. Lassé par l’indifférence des autorités françaises et anglaises, il décide de se lancer seul, sans appuis, presque sans argent, dans l’immensité du continent noir. Le 19 avril 1827, l’auteur quitte Kakoudy, sur les bords du Rio Nuñez ; à travers le Fouta Djalon, il atteint le haut Niger dans la région de Kouroussa. Puis, par Kankan et Tengréla, il arrive à Djenné après un an de fatigues et de maladies. Là il embarque sur une pirogue qui en un mois le conduit à Kabara, le port de Tombouctou. Le 20 avril 1828, c’est l’arrivée à Tombouctou-la-mystérieuse et la désillusion presque immédiate : la ville est triste, mal bâtie, moins active que Djenné et pratiquement vassale des Touaregs. Dès le 4 mai, Caillié, se faisant toujours passer pour un musulman, prend le chemin du retour, mais quel retour ! Associé à une immense caravane, il traverse le Sahara occidental par Arouan, Taoudeni et le Tafilelt. Souffrant de la faim et de la soif, maltraité par ses compagnons, il parvient à bout de force au Maroc. Le 7 septembre 1828, il est à Tanger où le consul de France, Delaporte, l’accueille et le fait rapatrier. Voyageur autodidacte, se déplaçant dans des conditions très précaires, Caillé n’a pu faire une œuvre rigoureusement scientifique. Ses observations sur la géographie, le climat, l’agriculture, les populations, les villes des régions traversées n’en sont pas moins extrêmement précieuses et seront confirmées par ses successeurs. ‎1818. Calhoun signed the Revolutionary War pension claim of Robert Hamilton of Massachusetts who had been a Lieutenant in the Army of the Revolution. Some marginal chiping and tears at the fold affecting the "J" in the signature of J.C. Calhoun. A good copy. Wikipedia: "John Caldwell Calhoun:March 18 1782 - March 31 1850 was an American statesman and political theorist from South Carolina who is best remembered for his strong defense of slavery and for advancing the concept of minority rights in politics which he did in the context of defending Southern values from perceived Northern threats. He began his political career as a nationalist modernizer and proponent of a strong national government and protective tariffs. By the late 1820s his views reversed and he became a leading proponent of states' rights limited government nullification and opposition to high tariffs-he saw Northern acceptance of these policies as the only way to keep the South in the Union. His beliefs and warnings heavily influenced the South's secession from the Union in 1860-61. Calhoun began his political career with election to the House of Representatives. As a prominent leader of the war hawk faction Calhoun strongly supported the War of 1812 to defend American honor against Britain. He then served as Secretary of War under President James Monroe and in his position reorganized and modernized the War Department. In the 1824 presidential election he was the overwhelming choice of the electoral college for Vice President of the United States. He served under John Quincy Adams and continued under Andrew Jackson who defeated Adams in 1828. unknown books‎

‎1854. Abolition African Americana SUMNER Charles. Defence of Massachusetts. Speeches of Hon. Charles Sumner on the Boston Memorial for the Repeal of the Fugitive Slave Bill and in Reply To Messrs. Jones of Tennessee Butler of South Carolina And Mason of Virginia in the Senate of the United States June 26 and 28 1854. Washington D.C.: Buell & Blanchard Printers 1854. At the time that this description is being written just three copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. The Memorial referred to in the title was a request by 2900 undersigners chiefly men of Boston Mass. to repeal the Fugitive Slave Bill of 1850. What follows is a transcription of Massachusetts Senator and famous abolitionist Charles Sumner's speeches in the ensuing debate: "Mr Jones. asks 'Can anyone suppose that if the Fugitive Slave Act be repealed this Union can exist' To which I reply at once that if the Union in any way be dependent on an Act-- I cannot call it a law-- so revolting in every regard as to that which he refers then it ought not to exist." Sumner goes on to argue amongst other things that the Fugitive Slave Act is parallel to the hated Stamp Act that sparked the Revolutionary War as well as to make spirited rebukes against the pro-slavery Senators Butler Mason and Jones: "The veteran Senator from Virginia Mr. Mason complained that I had characterized one of his "constituents" a person who went all the way from Virginia to Boston in pursuit of a slave as a Slave-Hunter. Sire I choose to call things by their right names. White I call white and black I call black. And where a person degrades himself to the work of chasing a fellow man who under the guidance of the north star has saught a freeman's home far away from the cofle and the chain that person whomsoever he may be I call a Slave-Hunter." Delicate but in good condition. <br /> <br /> Charles Sumner January 6 1811 - March 11 1874 was an American statesman and United States Senator from Massachusetts. As an academic lawyer and a powerful orator Sumner was the leader of the anti-slavery forces in the state and a leader of the Radical Republicans in the U.S. Senate during the American Civil War. During Reconstruction he fought to minimize the power of the ex-Confederates and guarantee equal rights to the freedmen. During the war he was a leader of the Radical Republican faction that criticized President Lincoln for being too moderate on the South. Sumner specialized in foreign affairs and worked closely with Lincoln to ensure the British and the French refrained from intervening on the side of the Confederacy during the Civil War. As the chief Radical leader in the Senate during Reconstruction Sumner fought hard to provide equal civil and voting rights for the freedmen on the grounds that "consent of the governed" was a basic principle of American republicanism and to block ex-Confederates from power so they would not reverse the gains made from the Union's victory in the Civil War. unknown‎

‎Richmond 1864. Broadside 18 x 12 inches. Printed in three columns. Previously folded with a couple small separations along old fold lines. Light toning and foxing. About very good. A very scarce and quite interesting broadside circular printing of the act which allowed slaves and free blacks to be used in certain tasks by the Confederate Army during the Civil War as well as instructions for the conscription and induction of those men into the armed forces. The Confederacy was loath to arm any of its slave population but by 1864 could not spare any further manpower from their infantry to perform menial tasks and the government therefore passed a law allowing slaves to be used "in certain capacities" such as the construction of fortification the production of arms and the transport of materiel. The first column of this broadside comprises a full printing of that law while the remainder sets forth the rules for the impressment of slaves into military service for their care while in service and for the compensation of their owners. <br> <br> A fascinating piece that lays bare the desperation of the Confederacy for labor and supplies in early 1864.
