METHODISM AND SLAVERY 1860
THE DOCTRINES AND DISCIPLINE OF THE METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH. 1860
New York: Carlton & Porter 1860. Hardcover. Very good. Original publisher's brown cloth. 16mo. 3 3/8 x 5 1/4". 278 xxiii 9 pp. Binding tight contents clean front cover spotted top edge of front cover rubbed. Overall in GOOD ANTIQUARIAN CONDITION.

First Edition thus with additional material brought up to the year 1860. EXTREMELY PROBLEMATIC STATEMENT BY THE METHODIST CHURCH ON THE QUESTION SLAVERY ISSUED ON THE EVE OF THE CIVIL WAR. Slavery was the issue that split the Methodist Episcopal Church into northern and southern branches. This book clearly states "We declare that we are as much as ever convinced of the great evil of slavery" and "seek its extirpation by all lawful and Christian means." p. 266. Additionally there is a very interesting chapter on "Printing and Circulating of Books Tracts and Periodicals" pp. 217-229.

Initial publication and subsequent survival of copies from this edition were drastically impacted by the ensuing Civil War. We have located three other copies currently on the market all in poor condition except ours which is preserved in very good state. Carlton & Porter hardcover
