WHY WORK FOR THE SLAVE Title from caption on first page. New York 1838. 12 pages. Sabin 88237. While several of these pamphlets are uncommon the Amos Dresser Narrative is quite scarce with no copy appearing at auction since 1921. While travelling through the South selling bibles Dresser took his carriage to a Nashville shop for repairs. There a workman found a store of anti-slavery letters books and pamphlets. According to Dresser "This added considerably to the general excitement which I afterwards learned was prevailing in relation to slavery--and in a short time it was noised about that I had been 'circulating incendiary periodicals among the free colored people and trying to excite the slaves to insurrection.'" Dresser was arrested and an impromptu Committee of Vigilance convened at the courthouse to try him for violating the non-existent law of possessing anti-slavery material. Dresser informed the Committee that the pamphlets were for his own use and not for dissemination. Nonetheless the committee found Dresser guilty of being a member of an anti-slavery society and of possessing periodicals published by the American Anti-Slavery Society. He was sentenced to twenty public lashes and ordered to leave Nashville within twenty-four hours. The punishment was carried out in front of a large crowd and Dresser was escorted out of town that night. hardcover books‎

‎An APPEAL In FAVOR Of That CLASS Of AMERICANS CALLED AFRICANS‎

‎Boston:: Allen and Ticknow. 1833. 12mo. 7-5/8" x 4-5/8". 1st edition American Imprints 18214; BAL 3116; Dumond p. 38. viii 232 pp. Errata slip tipped-in. Original publisher's gunmetal blue cloth binding with printed paper title label to spine. Professionally rebacked. Chip to lower right edge of spine label no. text affected. A VG copy. "More ambitious in scope than either its predecessors or its successors Child's Appeal also differs strikingly in style and substance from other white American abolitionist tracts including the many that bear witness to its influence. Unlike Amos A. Phelps's Lectures on Slavery and Its Remedy 1834 William Ellery Channing's Slavery 1835 Angelina GrimkŽ's Appeal to the Christian Women of the South 1836 and Theodore Dwight Weld's The Bible against Slavery 1837 the Appeal relies very sparingly on religious and scriptural arguments. Unlike Weld in American Slavery As It Is 1839 Child relegates incidents of cruelty to a minor place in the Appeal. Unlike GrimkŽ Child emphasizes rational rather than emotional persuasion cultivates a political discourse that is more masculine than feminine and targets a gender-mixed rather than a female audience. And unlike abolitionist tract writers generally not excepting Richard Hildreth whose Despotism in America 1840 amplifies the Appeal's economic and political analysis Child looks beyond the issue of slavery to the larger imperative of ending discrimination against free African Americans. In short the Appeal's most distinctive and enduring feature is its indictment of racism which governs four out of eight chapters recurs as a sub-theme elsewhere in the book and shapes Child's argument throughout." eNotes History. However as Child predicted in her preface ". though I expect ridicule and censure I cannot fear them." this stance of equality extracted a personal cost in terms of her public image & popularity e.g. the Boston Athaneum retracted the free library privileges that had been conferred & her book sales plunged. Nevertheless today the work is acknowledged as a ground-breaking tour-de- force occupying a preeminent role in American Abolitionist literature. Scarce in the trade with ABPC current showing only 3cc at auction in the last 30 years with the last in 2000 with that copy imperfect lacking the errata. . Frontis. Plate. ‎Anti Slavery. The Massachusetts State Texas Committee Conducted By. Adams Charles F.; Bowditch Henry I.‎

‎The FREE STATE RALLY And TEXAS CHAIN BREAKER. Vol. 1. No. 1. Saturday November 15 1845‎

‎Boston:: Jordan & Wiley. 1845. Folio. 14" x 10-1/4". 1st edition Dumond p. 54. 4 pp 1 printed sheet folded. Self-wrappers. Evenly staggered binding 'punch' holes to fold side of paper. Minor. extremity wear. Faint vertical & horizontal fold lines. Withal a. VG copy of this scarce abolitionist newspaper. This newspaper attempted to rally support against the pro-Slavery forces which envisioned Texas if granted statehood as one in their camp. "That question . whether they the inhabitants of Texas are to consist of slaves and slaveholders. whether slavery is to be nursed and protected in that vast territory." The rear page has printed 'cut-out post- cards' addressed to the Senate & the House protesting the annexation of Texas "for various reasons but especially" if slavery is allowed. This the first of an eventual 6 issues ceasing publication with the January 12 1846 issue after 'the Texas Question' had been answered. Texas had been admitted as a state of the Union December 29 1845. Scarce. While not unknown in an institutional environment copies of this Abolitionist serial are infrequently encountered today on the commercial market- no copies at auction these last 30 years.
