‎Lincoln’s treatment of Gen. Grant, Mr. Lincoln’s treatment of Gen. McClellan. Taint of disunion.‎

‎Half polished calf and marbled boards, rubbed at corners and joints, spine sunned. Interior lightly soiled, otherwise a fine copy. This scarce political pamphlet was printed by the Democrats as’Document No. 12’. It consists of a correspondence between Lincoln and Grant to show Lincoln’s full support of him, a series of correspondence between Lincolnand McClellan to show how Lincoln interfered with him, and a collection of quotes to give the impression that Lincoln was sowing the seeds of disunion through his actions. The pamphlet was produced to show how McClellan’s lack of success was at the hands of Lincoln and his policies and that Lincoln was unworthy of true non - partisan leadership. An interesting anti - Lincoln item.‎

‎Melioeus - Hipponax. The Biglow Papers‎

‎12mo Frontispiece portrait of Lowell by H. H. Hall original purple cloth decoratively stamped in blind, lettered in gilt, pale yellow endpapers Whitman Bennett in A Practical Guide to American Book Collectiong states “The rarest imprint is Cambridge and London (as here), for only 100 copies were printed and exported.” Wilson and Randall Thirteen Author Collections of the Nineteenth Century described the Cambridge and London as “a most unusual imprint.” Luther S. Livingston had never see one (see his Bibliography only 100 were so printed, at the same time as the 500 with the Cambridge and New York imprint and hte 1,500 with the Cambridge only! The name Bigelow (subsequently changed to Biglow) was borrowed from the earlier ” Major Jack Downing” papers, in which Bigelow appears as endorsing the veracity etc. of the Major, thus continuing in a degree the outstanding former vein of American political satire. They first appears in the “Anti - Slavery Almanac” for 1847 and were an immediate success. Lowell therefore continued with a second series of “Biglow Papers” in which he assailed the Meixcan War because of its pro - slavery implications. The verse may be a little obscure to those not familiar with the personages and events of the period but are amongst the most famous satire on American politics. The Biglow Papers also enjoyed a high level of popularity in England and when Lowell began writing the second series these were much collected abroad before the first American appearance. The most well known of these is Lowell’s famous endorsement of Lincoln’s policy in giving up Mason and Slidell to Great Britain after hey had been taken on the high seas by a Union war vessel. This “Mason and Slidell” is an imaginary conversation between Concord Bridge and Bunker Hill Monument and its first separate appearance was as an anonymous pamphlet in 1862, preceding the second Biglow collection. It is one of the rarest Lowell items Spine and edges faded, spine ends with some wear, else fine One of 100 copies with the rare Cambridge and London imprint [BAL 13068.
