Carl Milton Hughes, The Negro Novelist
The Negro Novelist: A Discussion of the Writings of American Negro Novelists 1940-1950 First Edition 1953
1953. African American Literature Hughes Carl Milton. The Negro Novelist: A Discussion of the Writings of American Negro Novelists 1940-1950. New York: The Citadel Press 1953. First edition. 288 pages. 8vo. Original cream cloth binding in publisher’s pictorial dust jacket. One of the earliest sustained works of African American literary criticism Hughes’s The Negro Novelist surveys the complete decade of Black novelists’ output from 1940–1950 situating their work within the broader trajectory of American literature and social change. The dust jacket describes it as “a significant book of literary criticism with far-reaching social implications†a claim borne out by its penetrating discussion of Richard Wright Frank Yerby Willard Motley Chester Himes Ann Petry Ralph Ellison Zora Neale Hurston J. Saunders Redding and others. Hughes both analyzes the novels themselves such as Native Son If He Hollers Let Him Go The Street Invisible Man and more and interprets contemporary critical responses making this book an invaluable resource for mid-century debates on Black authorship. Hughes emphasizes how “Negro authors rather than the American concept of Negroes may be viewed to advantage in the novels†framing Black literature as central to the American canon rather than peripheral. The book is also notable for its timing: published in 1953 a year before Brown v. Board of Education it captures African American writing at a transitional moment between the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights Movement. Its acknowledgment of women writers such as Petry and Hurston is especially significant as most mid-century criticism marginalized or excluded Black women’s voices. Later scholarship has recognized Hughes’s work as an important antecedent to the institutionalization of African American literary studies in the academy. Light wear and small chips to jacket at crown and foot of spine with a few short closed tears and surface rubbing; cloth clean and binding tight. Pages remain crisp and free of marks except a penciled number on the front free end paper. Overall very good in good-plus jacket. Foundational work of African American literary criticism and essential for documenting the early critical reception of Black novelists in mid-century America. unknown

CG. Woodson, Journal of Negro History C. G.
Journal of Negro History Covering Slave Impressment Creole Identity and Early Segregated Black Communities Three Issues 1943-46
1943. Woodson Carter Godwin. The Journal of Negro History. Archive of Three Issues of The Journal of Negro History featuring scholarship on slave impressment creole identity and early all-Black American communities. Washington D.C.: The Association for the Study of Negro Life and History 1943 and 1946. Three issues each in publisher’s printed wrappers 8vo comprising Vol. XXVIII No. 3 July 1943; Vol. XXXI No. 3 July 1946; and Vol. XXXI No. 4 October 1946. Measuring 10" x 6.5" and numbering between 111 and 137 pages each. Published quarterly by the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History which Woodson co-founded in 1915 with Jesse E. Moorland the journal was a foundational institution of Black intellectual life in the early 20th century and helped institutionalize what is now known as Black History Month.<br /> <br /> 1 The July 1943 issue includes Vincent W. Byas’ study of Creole culture in "Ethnologic Aspects of the Martinique Creole"; John Hope Franklin’s early and influential article "Slaves Virtually Free in Ante-Bellum North Carolina" which challenged prevailing understandings of slavery’s legal and social constraints in the South; W. Sherman Savage’s "The Contest over Slavery between Illinois and Missouri" a regional political analysis of antebellum tensions; and Arthur J. Alexander’s examination of the paradoxical role of Northern officials as enslavers in "Federal Officeholders in New York State as Slaveholders 1789-1805."<br /> <br /> 2 The July 1946 issue features Charles W. Cobb Jr. on "The Outlook Regarding State FEPC Legislation" an examination of early efforts to institutionalize anti-discrimination policies; Mozell C. Hill’s sociological survey "The All-Negro Communities of Oklahoma: The Natural History of a Social Movement" documenting Black self-governance and rural sovereignty in the American West; and Mexican anthropologist Gonzalo Aguirre Beltrán’s "Tribal Origins of Slaves in Mexico" which identifies distinct African cultural retentions through the rivers of Guinea and into São Tomé.<br /> <br /> 3 The October 1946 issue opens with the Annual Report of the Director and includes Bernard H. Nelson’s "Confederate Slave Impressment Legislation 1861-1865" which details conscription of Black labor during the Civil War; Marion J. Russell’s "American Slave Discontent in Records of the High Courts" a legal-historical view of enslaved resistance; Bella Gross’ study of "The First National Negro Convention" revisiting the 1830s convention movement; and John A. Schutz and Maud O’Neil’s "Arthur Holt Anglican Clergyman Reports on Barbados 1725-1733" a window into Caribbean plantation society as observed by a British missionary.<br /> <br /> These three issues together illustrate the scholarly range of The Journal of Negro History under Woodson's editorship combining archival recovery with contemporary analysis. Authors represented include some of the most influential figures in mid-century African American and African diasporic historiography including John Hope Franklin whose article here anticipates his landmark book From Slavery to Freedom 1947 and Charles W. Cobb Jr. who contributed to civil rights policy development. The Journal was co-founded by Jesse E. Moorland and Carter G. Woodson who also co-founded what is now called Black History Month. A strong archive in very good to near fine condition with light edge toning and faint foxing to wrappers. unknown

SIDEWALK STILLS
Hardback. New. Following in the great tradition of a noble and ancient genre Charles Nègre presents a series of ultra-contemporary still lifes he created at the end of the Parisian markets. The artist moves his camera out into the field capturing abandoned remains in situ. Playing on the codes of advertising the book Sidewalk Stills explores the visual charge of seemingly innocuous disposable subjects creating images that at once shock delight and make visible food waste and overconsumption. hardcover
