Questo libro nasce dal profondo desiderio di restituire ai procidani un tassello della cultura tradizionale, fatto di brevi narrazioni, aneddoti divertenti, fiabe, storie della paura, credenze, e al contempo di fare rivivere le voci dei narratori intervistati nel corso di una lunga ricerca sul campo iniziata nel 1980. Oltre quaranta anni fa, infatti, la Soprintendenza ai B.A.A.A.S. di Napoli commissionò ai curatori di questo libro e ad altri ricercatori una rilevazione del patrimonio folklorico procidano in tutti i suoi aspetti, dalle cerimonie religiose a quelle magiche, dalla narrativa di tradizione orale ai canti. I testi raccolti mediante interviste agli anziani dell'isola furono depositati nel 1980 presso il Museo Nazionale delle Arti e Tradizioni popolari di Roma e la Soprintendenza di Napoli. Le trascrizioni dei testi qui riportati comunicano in modo quasi fedele la modalità espressiva e la spontaneità degli informatori intervistati. Tali narrazioni possedevano un tempo un grande valore pedagogico e una funzione 'terapeutica' all'interno della cultura popolare dell'isola; inoltre esse venivano spesso raccontate in occasioni di narrazioni collettive. Le illustrazioni di Alessandro Mautone, famoso artista e ceramista campano, particolarmente sensibile al linguaggio metaforico del mito e della fiaba, sembrano cogliere in profondità, attraverso il gesto artistico, il senso ultimo del racconto, il suo messaggio più intimo e cifrato. Il suo tratto disegna un passato ancestrale in cui le fiabe, le narrazioni e i miti hanno ancora una forte valenza simbolica ed esplicativa della realtà.

Library rebound in orange buckram with lettering and decoration in white; covers bright and clean with mild rubbing to extremities. Binding is tight spine square. Library markings as usual. Light smudging or spotting to some pages throughout unobtrusive except page 14 -19 have some small tears and paper damage rendering several words difficult to make out. Overall a sturdy and serviceable reading copy. I believe this is the same book published in the USA as "The Enchanted Moccasins and Other Legends of the Americans Indians"; Enchanted Moccasins is one of the 28 tales comprising the collection. Originally compiled by Henry Schoolcraft re-interpreted and developed by Matthews to "enable them as far as worthy to take a place with the popular versions of the Arabian Nights' Entertainments. and other tales of Europe and the East to which they bear a resemblance in romantic interest and quaint extravagance of fancy."
