Wolf set the "Homeric Question" nearly two centuries ago when he argued convincingly that "Homer" was a non-literate bard incapable of composing and performing the monumental Iliad and Odyssey as we have them. In the long debate that has followed one of the most prominent figures has been Milman Parry who argued that there was great economy and extension of formulaic diction in the Homeric poems that the poet was in effect highly constrained by this formulaic diction and by the strict metrical requirements of the oral tradition. He concluded that only a non-literate bard could have composed such epics under these constraints. In Naming Achilles David Shive takes issue with Parry's findings. Engaging in a close analysis of the hero Achilles as he is named in all the grammatical cases he has concluded that Parry's thesis does not hold that there is more extension and less economy than Milman Parry claimed to find. Homer's poetry can be seen as more creative less restricted and in fact does not differ markedly from subsequent literary work. . Oxford University Press hardcover

Very Good Russian Very attractive early Russian edition of this famous Georgian national poem 'The knight in the panther skin', richly illustrated in very well binding. This is a Georgian medieval epic poem, written in the 12th century by Georgia's national poet Shota Rustaveli, and a definitive work of the Georgian Golden Age, the poem consists of over 1600 Rustavelian Quatrains and is considered to be a "masterpiece of the Georgian literature". Original decorative green cloth bdg. with Rustaveli's embossed portrait. Art-nouveau borders on board. Faded titles and decorations on spine. A very good copy. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In Russian. Shalva Nutshubidze, (1888-1969), was a Georgian philosopher, translator, and public benefactor, one of the founders of the Tbilisi State University (TSU), founder of Alethology. The main fields of scientific activity of Shalva Nutsubidze were: alethology, history of Georgian philosophy, history of the old Georgian literature, Rustvelology, problems of the oriental renaissance. He was also a well-known translator: he translated The Knight in the Panther's Skin of Shota Rustaveli, Visramiani, and other outstanding literary works in Russian. Nutsubidze is co-author of a well-known theory about the identity of Pseudo-Denys Areopagite and Georgian philosopher of the 5th century Peter the Iberian (Theory of Nutsubidze-Honigmann).

Ogni momento dell'anno aveva il suo bravo proverbio indicatore pronunciato dai più anziani con fare grave perché nella corte erano rappresentate tutte le tappe della vita, dalla gravidanza al parto, alla crescita, all'adolescenza, al fidanzamento, al matrimonio, alla maturità, alla vecchiaia, fino alla morte rigorosamente in casa. A decenni di distanza l'autrice ha rivissuto quegli anni e, grazie anche alle ricerche di Dino Coltro di cui si dichiara debitrice, si è documentata sul significato di riti cui aveva partecipato da bambina senza comprenderne la valenza storica e culturale. In quest'opera ripercorre il vissuto nella corte, il linguaggio, le tradizioni e le consuetudini del mondo contadino veneto come è esistito fino alla fine degli anni sessanta.
