brossura Donne cariche d'anni, con un volto sgradevole e ripugnante, la pelle ruvida e molto scura, che all'improvviso si fa pallida, cadaverica, la fronte bassa, stretta e solcata da mille rughe, gli occhi velati, messi per storto nelle orbite e la voce roca, tremula, a volte impercettibile. Nella coscienza popolare la paura della donna masca, dotata di magici e malvagi poteri persiste, anche se affievolita. Attraverso l'immagine-icona che ci è stata tramandata, superstizioni, pregiudizi, scaramanzie sono ancora largamente diffusi ai nostri giorni, più o meno tollerati e condivisi dalla mentalità comune, apparentemente inoffensivi. Donato Bosca di queste tradizioni popolari piemontesi è stato, in questi ultimi trent'anni, studioso puntuale e appassionato. Promuovendo indagini che hanno coinvolto centinaia di anziani e di alunni della scuola dell'obbligo, ha dato impulso ad una "rivincita" culturale che consente oggi di riconoscere alle masche il ruolo di vittime più o meno inconsapevoli di una psicosi rimasta radicata nel corso dei secoli. Caricature e parodie cui le masche sono oggi destinate dal teatro e dalle strategie di rinascita del "territorio" dimostrano che, con il suo singolare e irripetibile percorso di ricerca, l'autore ha fatto emergere dal sottosuolo della memoria collettiva fonti orali e documenti ufficiali che erano indispensabili per arrivare a comprendere la complessità del fenomeno culturale legato a queste credenze.

Stith Thompson is best known for his work on the classification of motifs in folk tales. His six-volume "Motif-Index of Folk-Literature "1955-1958 is considered the international key to traditional material.
