Non diversamente dai cavalieri del nostro medioevo, gli eroi e i guerrieri dei miti e delle leggende giapponesi danno prova del proprio coraggio lottando contro mostri terribili che opprimono i villaggi e le corti di principi e di sovrani. Come Yorimasa, che uccide col suo potente arco una sinistra creatura che affligge l'imperatore al calar delle tenebre; o Raik?, che entra nel palazzo dei temibili oni per uccidere il re di quei mostri e liberare le fanciulle che quegli tiene schiave. I shoj?, per esempio, restituiscono la vita al povero Yurine dandogli da bere il loro sakè sacro, mentre i tengu insegnano a Yoshitsune le tecniche marziali che gli permetteranno di sconfiggere il gigantesco Benkei. Attraverso le suggestive vicende raccontate in questo libro rivive un Giappone magico e cavalleresco che non mancherà di sorprenderci e di affascinarci.
