Con questo volume Marie-Louise von Franz invita i lettori a imparare qualcosa dalla saggezza che si esprime nelle fiabe, qualcosa che sia utile oggi. Il libro si presta a una lettura immediata, vista la semplicità delle fiabe e il riscontro con le storie moderne che l'autrice racconta; ma può essere oggetto di una lettura meditata, che si soffermi sulla ricca esperienza umana contenuta nelle osservazioni psicologiche. Dagli archetipi fiabeschi prende infatti le mosse una psicologia contemporanea del femminile (della donna in primo luogo, ma anche dell'elemento femminile nell'uomo), capace di dare risposte autentiche a molte domande che l'epoca attuale si pone.

br. Ciò che le persone davvero cercano è la sensazione di essere pienamente vive. Tale spinta a «individuarsi» (di qui il titolo del libro) più che mai pone problemi a chi vive nelle nostre società. Nelle fiabe raccolte nel testo l'avvicinarsi al nucleo dell'anima, situato nell'inconscio, è un viaggio pieno di avventure e di pericoli, al cui centro sta un uccello magico che rappresenta l'essenza preziosa difficilmente raggiungibile, o ciò che copre questa essenza. Come tutti i simboli anche quest'uccello ha duplice aspetto: buono e cattivo. Il Sé interiore, in effetti, può esercitare anche una seduzione, contro la quale dev'essere vigile il nostro atteggiamento conscio.

brossura Ha scritto Jung che le fiabe consentono di studiare meglio l'anatomia comparata della psiche: esse sono infatti l'espressione più pura dei processi psichici dell'inconscio collettivo, e rappresentano gli archetipi in forma semplice e concisa. Marie-Louise von Franz utilizza in questo volume l'approccio della psicologia analitica nel tentativo di rendere accessibili all'uomo moderno le esperienze di vita che sono contenute nelle fiabe. Per esemplificare la sua proposta di lettura, la von Franz studia inizialmente un testo dei Grimm, "Le tre piume", il cui motivo dominante sta nel difficile riconoscimento dell'elemento femminile, per poi passare ad altre fiabe di vari paesi in cui si ritrovano temi che, trasposti nelle categorie junghiane, rivelano la loro ricchezza e consentono riferimenti illuminanti. In queste pagine, scritte con ammirevole chiarezza, lo stesso simbolismo degli animali, degli oggetti, dei gesti e dei numeri trova non una spiegazione meccanica, ma una carica di significati capaci di parlare alla nostra sensibilità.
