ill., br. Questo libro contiene una varietà di mostri e fantasmi, alcuni originari del Giappone, altri incorporati nel folclore nipponico da culture straniere. Secondo la leggenda, un antico imperatore ricevette in dono da un animale magico chiamato appunto Hakutaku un volume straordinario, una sorta di "bestiario dei mostri" contenente informazioni su tutti gli spiriti, i fantasmi, gli dei e i demoni del Giappone. Di questo libro, andato perso molto tempo fa, sarebbero sopravvissuti alcuni frammenti. Nel corso dei secoli, gli artisti giapponesi crearono enciclopedie illustrate dedicate al mondo degli spiriti (yokai) e del soprannaturale. Le loro fonti principali erano i racconti e le tradizioni del folclore locale, ma anche la storia e la letteratura; e non mancarono di attingere all'immenso patrimonio degli antichi classici cinesi, reinterpretati attraverso il filtro della cultura e della sensibilità giapponesi. Inventarono così tanti nuovi yokai! E ancora oggi l'abitudine di collezionare e raccontare storie simili è molto sviluppata in Giappone.
