ill. Le stampe, le illustrazioni e le caricature ci hanno tramandato un'immagine poco nota dei milanesi lungo tutto il corso dei cento anni che vanno dal 1790 al 1890. Un secolo che vide un susseguirsi di vicende storiche ed economiche che portarono la città alla sua fisionomia di centro culturale, commerciale e industriale all'alba del XX secolo. Mode e costumi dei milanesi appartenenti alle diverse classi sociali vennero rappresentati spesso mettendone in risalto gli aspetti più umoristici. Tutte le tecniche di stampa vennero utilizzate, dalle incisioni in rame alla xilografia, alla litografia, per finire negli ultimi anni dell'Ottocento alle oleografie, che ebbero a Milano il più importante centro di produzione italiano e che costituirono esse stesse una particolare forma di gusto estetico. Dalle mode venute da Parigi subito dopo la Rivoluzione francese, passando sotto il regno di Napoleone e poi la Restaurazione austriaca, la libertà di esprimere le idee politiche era strettamente sottoposta a censure e trovava unico sfogo nella moderata critica sociale o nella rappresentazione della vita quotidiana. Il '48, per quanto di brevissima durata, costituì un momento culminante del secolo, dando vita a una produzione caricaturale di dimensioni sconosciute in Italia. La vita dei milanesi, con l'unificazione della nazione fu oggetto di una satira di costume sempre più legata ai modi di vivere delle classi borghesi ed espresse i suoi risultati migliori nei decenni tra il 1860 e il 1880.

Da un vecchio catalogo: "Una delle opere più interessanti e di maggior successo sul folklore e la demopsicologia della Sardegna, e che ai suoi tempi suscito' una tempesta sul capo dell'Autore".
