L'immaginario fiabesco birmano è profondamente influenzato dall'intreccio tra il misticismo karmico di origine buddhista e induista, prevalente nell'area tibetana e nepalese, e l'animismo arcaico imperante tra le tribù cambogiane e tailandesi su cui il buddhismo si andò a innestare. I personaggi sono grandi re, principesse bellissime e principi innamorati, tigri, scimmie e altri animali ora sciocchi e tracotanti, ora più umani degli uomini stessi; troviamo monaci ed eremiti, ubriaconi e fumatori di oppio, poveri contadini, ladri sfrontati e figure appartenenti alla mitologia birmana, come i naga, divinità capricciose dall'aspetto di serpente, o i nat, inquieti spiriti custodi di alberi, fiumi, ponti e luoghi di passaggio, che spesso prima erano esseri umani caduti vittima di una morte ingiusta o violenta.
