‎DISTORTED IDEALS IN GREEK VASE-PAINTING The World of Mythological Burlesque‎

‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good in Near Fine dust jacket. 2008. Hardcover. 052189641X . Remainder mark black marker line to top textblock. Else very light shelfwear to book. Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; This book examines Greek vase-paintings that depict humorous burlesque and irreverent images of Greek mythology and the gods. Many of the images present the gods and heroes as ridiculous and ugly. While the narrative content of some images may appear to be trivial others address issues that are deeply serious. When placed against the background of the religious beliefs and social frameworks from which they spring these images allow us to explore questions relating to their meaning in particular communities. Throughout we see indications that Greek vase-painters developed their own comedic narratives and visual jokes. The images enhance our understanding of Greek society in just the same way as their more sober siblings in "serious" art. ; 1.04 x 9.31 x 6.34 Inches; 450 pages . ‎THE TYRANT'S WRIT Myths and Images of Writing in Ancient Greece‎

‎Princeton University Press. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1994. Hardcover. 0691032386 . Light shelfwear to book and DJ. ; 280 pages; Covering material as diverse as curse tablets coins tattoos and legal decrees Deborah Steiner explores the reception of writing in archaic and classical Greece. She moves beyond questions concerning ancient literacy and the origins of the Greek alphabet to examine representations of writing in the myths and imaginative literature of the period. Maintaining that the Greek alphabet was not seen purely as a means of transcribing and preserving the spoken word the author investigates parallels between writing and other signifiers such as omens tokens and talismans; the role of inscription in religious rites including cursing oath-taking and dedication; and perceptions of how writing functioned both in autocracies and democracies. Particularly innovative is the suggestion that fifth-century Greek historians and dramatists portrayed writing as an essential tool of tyrants who not only issue written decrees but also "inscribe" human bodies with brands and cut up land with compasses and rules. The despotic overtones associated with writing inform discussion of its function in democracies. Although writing could promote equal justice ancient sources also linked this activity with historical and mythical figures who opposed the populist regime. By examining this highly nuanced portrayal of writing Steiner offers a new perspective on ancient views of written law and its role in 5th-century Athenian democracy. . ‎Cambridge University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1998. Hardcover. 0521620228 . Very minor shelfwear. ; This is a study of the works of art from early Greece that have long been presented as "illustrations to Homer " but that are argued here to be nothing of the kind. Early Greek artists showed no preference for Homeric subjects and when their interests did coincide with Homer's treated his account as at best one of the possible variants. Close descriptive analysis of texts and pictures and of the artists' aims together with statistical evidence provide the basis for the argument. ; 0.43 x 8.29 x 5.91 Inches; 200 pages . Large tear to DJ repaired with cellotape with a few tears with some loss. ; Cambridge Classical Studies; 200 pages; Although Ovid is currently enjoying a new wave of popularity most critics withhold from his poetry the close word-by-word readings that are necessary for a thorough understanding of it. Ovid twice treated the myth of Persephone and Hinds's book is at first a historical inquiry--the most extensive yet done--into the double transformation in Metamorphosis 5 and Fasti 4 of the rape of Persephone one of the great Graeco-Roman myths. The study continues as a critical exploration of Ovid's self-conscious delight in language and in writing manifested in these twin narratives providing a feast for students of both Latin poetry and narratives in general. . ‎MYTH A Biography of Belief‎

‎Oxford University Press. Very Good. 2003. Paperback. 019516105X . Light creasing to front wrap. Minor shelfwear. Scholar's name to half-title Robert Brown. ; Exploring classic works such as the Song of Songs the Tao Te Ching the Rig Veda the New Testament and the Indonesian myth of Hainuwele Myth: A Biography of Belief reveals the cultural energies that ancient "mythmakers" sought to corral in their creations. David Leeming argues that myths are by definition evolving creations that live on in the work of modern-day "mythmakers" such as W. B. Yeats Virginia Woolf and Albert Einstein. Leeming provides an engaging new outlook on the role of myth in the works of these and other contemporary artists and scientists. The similarities between modern concepts like the "Big Bang" and ancient myths of creation illustrate our continuing need to confront the mysteries of existence by way of metaphor and narrative. Leeming suggests that myth and factual knowledge do not negate but complement each other. Whether it is the "American Dream" alien abduction or belief in virgin birth and resurrection these "living myths" play a very therapeutic role in the development of a healthy society. ; 192 pages . ‎MYTH AND HISTORY IN ANCIENT GREECE The Symbolic Creation of a Colony‎

‎Princeton: Princeton University Press. Fine in Very Good dust jacket. 2003. Hardcover. 0691114587 . Book is fine. DJ has light shelfwear with a few small scratches. ; Xvii 178pp. Surely the ancient Greeks would have been baffled to see what we consider their "mythology." Here Claude Calame mounts a powerful critique of modern-day misconceptions on this front and the lax methodology that has allowed them to prevail. He argues that the Greeks viewed their abundance of narratives not as a single mythology but as an "archaeology." They speculated symbolically on key historical events so that a community of believing citizens could access them efficiently through ritual means. Central to the book is Calame's rigorous and fruitful analysis of various accounts of the foundation of that most "mythical" of the Greek colonies--Cyrene in eastern Libya. Calame opens with a magisterial historical survey demonstrating today's misapplication of the terms "myth" and "mythology." Next he examines the Greeks' symbolic discourse to show that these modern concepts arose much later than commonly believed. Having established this interpretive framework Calame undertakes a comparative analysis of six accounts of Cyrene's foundation: three by Pindar and one each by Herodotus in two different versions Callimachus and Apollonius of Rhodes. We see how the underlying narrative was shaped in each into a poetically sophisticated distinctive form by the respective medium a particular poetical genre and the specific socio-historical circumstances. Calame concludes by arguing in favor of the Greeks' symbolic approach to the past and by examining the relation of mythos to poetry and music. ; 178 pages . Princeton University Press hardcover‎

Else very minor shelfwear to book and DJ. ; This study in comparative mythology interprets the Greek myths in the light of the mythologies of other Indo-European cultures - Indian Celtic Scandinavian Roman Greek Iranian and Ossetian. The author uses a modified version of the schema proposed by the French theorist Dumezil to consider the profound connections between such works as the "Iliad" the "Odyssey" the Indian epics - the "Ramayana" and the "Mahabharata" - the Iranian "Book of Kings" and the Scandinavian "Yaglingasaga". The book includes a long critical exposition of the discipline of comparative mythology from its 18th-century origins to the revival of the discipline by Dumezil and his followers from 1938 to the present. It also reassesses the profound critique of Dumezil which linked him with Nazi ideology. ; 256 pages . I. B. Tauris hardcover‎

Else very minor shelfwear to book. Dustjacket has light shelfwear with 1 tiny chip to head of spine. ; In The Experiences of Tiresias its title referring to the shepherd struck blind after glimpsing Athena's naked body Nicole Loraux explores the ambivalence in how the Greek male defines himself in relationship to the feminine. In these essays Loraux disturbs the idea of virile men and feminine women a distinction found in official discourse and aimed at protecting the ideals of male identity from any taint of the feminine. Turning to epic and to Socrates however she insists on a logic of an inclusiveness between the genders which casts a shadow over their clear officially defined borders. "Nicole Loraux documents with delicate sensitivity to text and context the mobility of the contrast between 'man' and 'the feminine. '. Her readings of tragedy are particularly compelling. "--Mary Margaret McCabe The Times Literary Supplement "Loraux is a pioneer in the analysis of gender difference and sexuality in classical Greece. Strongly opposed to polarized interpretations of 'masculine' and 'feminine ' she illuminates the complex and often contradictory interrelationship of the sexes in real life and in the Greek/Athenian social 'imaginary.
