‎Jenny CARRE (1902-1945), est créatrice de costume de théâtre pour le Châtelet et La Gaîté Lyrique. Proche de MINSTINGUETT (Jeanne Bourgeois), elle travaille à des revues musicales et des décors de films, dont celui de "Rigolboche". Elle est collaboratrice d'Henri R. FOST pour certaines pièces et dessins. Son style, aux mouvements souples et ronds, est proche de l'Art Déco. La première gouache est épinglée à la seconde, elle représente une dame de la cour en buste, vêtue à l'espagnole de noir et de rouge, avec une touche de blanc dans les gants et l'éventail. Le visage est juste suggéré. Le second dessin représente la "dame de cour" en pied, toute en dentelles noires et blanches. Une rétrospective au Musée des Années 30 et un livre consacrent son oeuvre en 2008. Marques de crayon, pliure centrale.‎

‎Très rare édition originale, dédiée à la duchesse de Montfort. Carré avait été envoyé par Colbert en Orient pour faciliter l'installation de la Compagnie des Indes, il rapporte comment il a sauvé de la mort six Turcs enterrés jusqu'au cou destinés à être décapités, comment il a baptisé une centaine de petites filles vouées à mourir de soif en Perse, alors qu'elles étaient vendues pour le sérail. Il raconte qu'il s'est fait détrousser à Falloudja, qu'il a dû combattre des brigands, chasser les fauves, et croiser des déserteurs sur les routes, ou dans une caravane, rencontrer deux Géorgiennes qui ont été achetées par un riche marchand du bazar. Il entre aussi dans des détails négligés par ses prédécesseurs : beauté des paysages, comparaison des harems avec les cloîtres des nonnes, maladies et médecine traditionnelle. Barthélemy Carré, né en 1636 et mort après 1700, est un ecclésiastique français qui a effectué deux voyages en Asie (1668 et 1674) pour le compte de Colbert, en relation avec la Compagnie des Indes orientales. ‎Édition originale de cet ouvrage sur lEmpire Ottoman dû à Antoine-Laurent Castellan (1772-1838), peintre, graveur et voyageur français, publication célèbre pour la richesse de son iconographie ethnographique constituée de 72 gravures à pleine page dues à M. Lambert, toutes aquarellées dans cet exemplaire. Si la qualité de la mise en couleur peut varier selon les exemplaires, celle de celui présent est riche et nuancée. Le coloriste a réalisé un travail d'une grande finesse, mettant en valeur chaque détail, soulignant ainsi la beauté des gravures. Le succès de ces petits volumes illustrés poussa dailleurs léditeur français Nepveu à publier dautres ouvrages de la sorte sur dautres régions du monde. Élève de Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes qui lui apprend des rudiments de peinture, Castellan voyage beaucoup, notamment en Turquie, en Grèce, en Italie et en Suisse. A son retour, il publie plusieurs ouvrages sur ces voyages qu'il illustre à partir de ses propres dessins, cest le cas du présent ouvrage. Les planches représentent une variété de sujets avec une majorité de portraits mettant à lhonneur les costumes, mais aussi des scènes de vie, des instruments de musique ou encore de larchitecture (mosquée, harem etc.). Parmi les nombreux portraits on peut citer: Vizir. Sultan, Musicienne. Danseuse. Surveillante du Harem, Turch-Oghan écrivant avec le Calam. Maître décriture, Porte turban du Sultan. Porte épée du Sultan, Mamlouks, Ministre des affaires étrangères. Interprète. ou encore Derviches tournans. En plus de la richesse de ses illustrations, louvrage regorge dinformations sur lhistoire et la culture du vaste empire ottoman. En effet, l'auteur y développe un abrégé de l'histoire ottomane (t.1 & 2), une étude de la Cour (t.3) et du gouvernement (t.4), un aperçu de la religion (t.5) et un panorama des costumes et des arts métiers (t.6). First edition of this work on the Ottoman Empire by Antoine-Laurent Castellan (1772-1838), French painter, engraver, and traveler, a publication famous for its rich ethnographic iconography consisting of 72 full-page engravings by M. Lambert, all watercolored in this copy. While the quality of the coloring may vary from copy to copy, the coloring in this copy is rich and nuanced. The colorist has done a very delicate job, highlighting every detail and thus emphasizing the beauty of the engravings. The success of these small illustrated volumes prompted the French publisher Nepveu to publish other works of this kind on other regions of the world. A pupil of Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes, who taught him the basics of painting, Castellan traveled extensively, notably to Turkey, Greece, Italy, and Switzerland. On his return, he published several works on these travels, which he illustrated with his own drawings, as is the case with this work. The plates depict a variety of subjects, with a majority of portraits highlighting costumes, but also scenes from everyday life, musical instruments, and architecture (mosques, harems, etc.). Among the many portraits are: Vizier. Sultan, Musician. Dancer. Harem Supervisor, "Turch-Oghan Writing with the Calam. Master of Writing, Sultan's Turban Bearer. Sultan's Sword Bearer, Mamluks, Minister of Foreign Affairs. Interpreter, and Whirling Dervishes." In addition to its rich illustrations, the book is full of information on the history and culture of the vast Ottoman Empire. The author provides a summary of Ottoman history (vols. 1 & 2), a study of the court (vol. 3) and the government (vol. 4), an overview of religion (vol. 5) and a panorama of costumes and crafts (vol. 6). A beautiful copy with particularly vivid and refined colors. A very fine copy, fresh and superbly bound.‎
