‎Wallraf, Adolf‎

‎Historiography and Identity IV: Writing History Across Medieval Eurasia‎

‎, Brepols, 2021 Hardback, x + 377 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:6 b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503586588.‎

‎Summary Historical writing has shaped identities in various ways and to different extents. This volume explores this multiplicity by looking at case studies from Europe, Byzantium, the Islamic World, and China around the turn of the first millennium. The chapters in this volume address official histories and polemical critique, traditional genres and experimental forms, ancient traditions and emerging territories, empires and barbarians. The authors do not take the identities highlighted in the texts for granted, but examine the complex strategies of identification that they employ. This volume thus explores how historiographical works in diverse contexts construct and shape identities, as well as legitimate political claims and communicate 'visions of community'. ‎Historiography and Identity I: Ancient and Early Christian Narratives of Community‎

‎, Brepols, 2019 Hardback, vi + 322 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Language: English. ISBN 9782503581576.‎

‎Summary The six-volume sub-series Historiography and Identity unites a wide variety of case studies from Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages, from the Latin West to the emerging polities in Northern and Eastern Europe, and also incorporates a Eurasian perspective which includes the Islamic World and China. The series aims to develop a critical methodology that harnesses the potential of identity studies to enhance our understanding of the construction and impact of historiography. This first volume in the Historiography and Identity sub-series examines the many ways in which historiographical works shaped identities in ancient and medieval societies by focusing on the historians of ancient Greece and the late Roman Empire. It presents in-depth studies about how history writing could create a sense of community, thereby shedding light on the links between authorial strategies, processes of identification, and cultural memory. The contributions explore the importance of regional, ethnic, cultural, and imperial identities to the process of history writing, embedding the works in the changing political landscape. ‎Historiography and Identity V: The Emergence of New Peoples and Polities in Europe, 1000-1300‎

‎, Brepols, 2023 Hardback, xiv + 501 pages, Size:156 x 234 mm, Illustrations:2 b/w, 9 maps b/w, Language: English. ISBN 9782503588490.‎

‎Summary In many countries in Northern and Eastern Europe, the period after 1000 saw the emergence of new Christian kingdoms. This process was soon reflected in works of historiography that traced the foundation and development of the new polities. Many of these texts had a lasting impact on the formation of political, ethnic, and religious identities of these states and peoples. This volume deals with some of these earliest histories narrating the past of the new polities that had emerged after 1000 in Northern, East Central, and Eastern Europe, as well as in the Adriatic regions. They have often been understood as 'national histories', but a closer look brings out the differences in their aims and construction. One question addressed here is to what extent these historians built on models of identification developed in earlier historiography. The volume provides an overview of several fundamental texts in which identities in the new Christian kingdoms were negotiated, and of recent research on these texts. ‎WATERCOLOURS COSTUMES. HECKEL Catharina SPERLING.‎

‎Four young ladies in fancy gowns.Augsburg ca. 1725. Four drawings in brown ink watercolour and coloured gouaches on vellum highlighted with gold each 5.9 x 9.0 cm. Each mounted in a later passe-partout with a gold border in an ebonized wooden frame 23.5 x 20.5 cm.‎

‎A matching set of four lovely and delicate watercolour drawings each depicting a young lady in a fancy German costume drawn and painted on vellum by the Augsburg artist Catharina Sperling Heckel 1699-1741. She learned painting and drawing from her father the Augsburg goldsmith Michael Heckel engraving from Johann Ulrich Kraus and married the engraver Hieronymus Sperling 1695-1777 in 1725. It is not clear whether she made these drawings shortly before or shortly after her marriage. She is best known for her ca. 1728 miniature portrait of Charles Edward Stuart Bonnie Prince Charlie the young pretender to the English throne. She never recovered from the birth of her first child in 1741 dying within a few weeks. Each drawing shows a young German lady wearing a long gown and a cap or bonnet but one also carries a hat. The four drawings differ in the style of the gowns and other elements. In very good condition. With a few small chips in the paint of the frame. Lovely watercolour costume drawings of four young German ladies perhaps from a court wedding in the free Imperial city of Augsburg.l Cf. Thieme & Becker XVI pp. 208-209. hardcover‎

For centuriesthe House of Lords has provoked blind adorationblind rage and often public merriment.Opening with a knockabout eyewitness account of Mrs Thatcher's entry into the Other Place she had so long despisedacclaimed writeractor and man of the theatre John Wells now tells the full history of this unique hereditary institution. Since the Roman occupationsome kind of Senate has always existed in Britainbut it was in the 14thC that a Chamber of Peersdistinct and separate from the House of Commonsemerged. While the Commons represented the Communes the peoplethe Lords represented no one but themselves.Even the Bishopswho were in a sense the first democratically elected members of Parliament being chosen by their own clergydid not represent either the Church or their own diocese but were simply Wise Men with the right to advise the Head of State.Explaining the historical origins of their bizarre ritualsJohn Wells throws vivid light on the present-day institution and its possible future. In a series of dramaticlashbacks including the murder of Thomas Beckett Cromwell'sabolition of the Lords and the Great Reform BillWells demonstrates the House's record on Europeits political value as a sheet-anchor in stormy weather and its attitude to order just or unjust.By way of a description of the old Palace of Westminster before the fire of 1834 and a guide to the present buildingthe author brings us to the modern political arena with Wedgwood Benn's famous renunciation of his father's peeragegives a Press Gallery view of the Great Maastricht Debatetalks to the Black Rod penetrates the inner sanctum of the Lord Great Chamberlain's Chamberand meets the guardian of the Kremlina place of mystery under the Victoria Tower. Both entertaining and instructive' THE HOUSE of LORDS' is a fascinating and delightful work of history.
