<p>This is an edition of two texts by AbÅ« ‘Abd al-RaḥmÄn al-SulamÄ« d. 412/1021 one of the most important <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> authors. Al-SulamÄ« combined thorough knowledge of tradition <em>ḥadÄ«th</em> with the <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> heritage. He paved the way for the gradual acceptance of Ṣūfism into the mainstream of Islamic thought by endeavoring in much of his work to prove that Ṣūfism and Islam were mutually compatible .</p><p>The texts in this edition present two important aspects of al-Sulamī‟s writings. In the <em>JawÄmi‘ adÄb al-Ṣūfiyya</em> "<em>A collection of ṢūfÄ« rules of conduct</em>" al-SulamÄ« provides us with what is apparently the first comprehensive documentation of <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> customs and practices. Most of the <em>JawÄmi‘</em> consists of <em>Ṣūfi</em> sayings representing the views of five generations of thinkers. The subjects dealt with cover a wide range and reflect the preoccupations of <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> society.</p><p>The second work is a handbook of spiritual discipline entitled <em>‘UyÅ«b al-nafs wa-mudÄwÄtuhÄ</em> "<em>The defects of the soul and their remedy</em>". As its title suggests the <em>‘UyÅ«b</em> deals with one of the central motifs of Ṣūfism the constant struggle against the <em>nafs</em> or the "lower soul". The attitudes and beliefs expressed are on the whole characteristic of the early ascetics who regarded the conduct of the Prophet as the supreme example. In both style and content this work occupies the middle ground between the worlds of <em>ḥadÄ«th</em> <em>adab</em> and ethics. The two texts contribute not only to a better appreciation of al-SulamÄ«'s work but also to our understanding of a crucial phase in the history of Ṣūfism.</p> The Max Schloessinger Memorial Foundation paperback

To accommodate the needs of lay members of the <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> brotherhood the author makes prominent use of the traditional concept of <em>rukhá¹£a</em> the relaxation of strict rules .</p><p><em>KitÄb ÄdÄb al-murÄ«dÄ«n</em> is a book steeped in the <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> literary tradition and contains elements found in earlier <em>ṢūfÄ«</em> classics. However all the variegated elements have been recast by the author in his own mold. Its language is clear and simple in accordance with its purpose as a popular manual. La plupart des bibliographes ne connaissent qu’une édition de 1767.François Richer, un jurisconsulte natif d’Avranches est surtout connu pour son recueil des Causes célèbres. Dans cet ouvrage il explique les pouvoirs ecclésiastiques, conciles, censures religieuses, pouvoirs du magistrat et ses droits sur le dogme, sacrements, dîmes, etc. Conlon, 66.1347.Exemplaire provenant de la bibliothèque du MARQUIS D’ALIGRE (ex-libris.) Né à Paris en 1726 dans une famille qui compta deux chanceliers, il fut nommé Président du Parlement en 1768. Il fit plusieurs fois des remontrances au roi contre les impôts et contre les opérations ministérielles subversives. En 1788, en présence de Necker, il lut un mémoire au roi dans lequel il pronostiquait les malheurs qui, selon lui, découleraient de la convocation des États-Généraux. N’ayant pas été écouté par le roi, d’Aligre démissionna du Parlement. Le jour de la prise de la Bastille il fut arrêté mais put s’échapper grâce à un de ses anciens domestiques. Il émigra à Londres où l’attendait une fortune placée dans une banque anglaise. Il mourut en 1798 à Brunswick, laissant une fortune colossale à ses deux enfants.
