Shelley was especially fond of Lewis's work although Byron mocked the author's "gibb'ring spectres" and "infernal brain" in the poem "English Bards and Scotch Reviewers. <br>Â Â Â Â <br>Â Â Â Â NCBEL III 743 first ed. Later 19th-century half sheep in imitation of morocco over marbled paper sides worn and abraded; leather chipping over head of spine covers pressure-stamped by a now-defunct institution spine with paper shelving label. Title-page and several others stamped; endpaper and final blank separated but present former with date slip; many pages not unexpectedly show light to moderate spots of foxing and there is some staining. Last leaf torn across outer corner taking top author's name in ads on verso it was John Beckmann and most of three words of the last poem's last verse "herte should breke". Pr. by W. To the critics who objected to his use of black slaves in a Gothic story he defended himself by saying that if he could "have produced the same effect by making my heroine blue blue I should have made her." "As far as Lewis's search for novelty and striking effects is concerned it is interesting to highlight the character of Hassan an African servant.Hassan is in Ormond's service because the earl has cruelly snatched him from his family and hating the white race that he considers responsible for his sufferences the black slave refuses to escape only because he is aware of his master's evil propensity to torture people around him. He hates all the world.that heart was once feeling and kind." This Lewis's most famous play went into eight printed editions by the following year and a total of eleven by 1803. Custom bound without the original wrappers in half blue morocco decorative paperboards spine with raised bands furrowed in gilt creating five compartments the middle compartment with a gilt device the compartments above and below with "Rosario" and "Monk Lewis" in gilt respectively pages with deckled edges and decorative endpapers matching the boards. Bound at the Haverhill Bindery with their ticket on the front pastedown "Chase Bros. Prop. 15 Washington St." Boards and spine worn spine slightly cocked the paper on the front board with a small abrasion and some edgewear to the pages overall still a very good copy with the binding sound and tight. A worn but nonetheless charmingly bound copy of Matthew Gregory Lewis' disturbing and controversial novel originally published in 1796. Laird & Lee Publishers hardcover
