THE ANCIENT GREEK HERO IN 24 HOURS
Belknap Press. Near Fine in Fine dust jacket. 2013. Hardcover. 0674073401 . Dustjacket is protected in mylar. ; The ancient Greeks concept of the hero was very different from what we understand by the term today Gregory Nagy arguesand it is only through analyzing their historical contexts that we can truly understand Achilles Odysseus Oedipus and Herakles. In Greek tradition a hero was a human male or female of the remote past who was endowed with superhuman abilities by virtue of being descended from an immortal god. Despite their mortality heroes like the gods were objects of cult worship. Nagy examines this distinctively religious notion of the hero in its many dimensions in texts spanning the eighth to fourth centuries bce: the Homeric Iliad and Odyssey; tragedies of Aeschylus Sophocles and Euripides; songs of Sappho and Pindar; and dialogues of Plato. All works are presented in English translation with attention to the subtleties of the original Greek and are often further illuminated by illustrations taken from Athenian vase paintings. ; 752 pages . THE BEST OF THE ACHAEANS Concepts of the Hero in Archaic Greek Poetry
The Johns Hopkins University Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1979. Hardcover. 0801822009 . Foxing to textblock. Scholar's bookplate to inner cover G. P. Goold. Includes 3 page typed review of book inscribed to G. P. Goold from "John" tipped in. ; Despite widespread interest in the Greek hero as a cult figure little was written about the relationship between the cult practices and the portrayals of the hero in poetry. The first edition of The Best of the Achaeans bridged that gap raising new questions about what could be known or conjectured about Greek heroes. In this revised edition which features a new preface by the author Gregory Nagy reconsiders his conclusions in the light of the subsequent debate and resumes his discussion of the special status of heroes in ancient Greek life and poetry. His book remains an engaging introduction both to the concept of the hero in Hellenic civilization and to the poetic forms through which the hero is defined: the Iliad and Odyssey in particular and archaic Greek poetry in general. ; 414 pages . Nair Anita; Diano F. E. (cur.)
La mia magica India. Favole e miti
ill., ril.

Ediz. a colori
ill., ril.
