Bellissima incisione in buono stato. 42 x 30 cm. Esculapio è un personaggio della mitologia greca. Figlio di Apollo e di Arsinoe secondo Esiodo, oppure di Apollo e Coronide per Pindaro, è un semidio e dunque uomo mortale per Omero, si diceva fosse stato istruito nella medicina dal centauro Chirone, o che avesse ereditato tale proprietà dal padre Apollo. Divenne poi il dio della medicina, al pari di suo padre, ed era una divinità molto adorata dal popolo, in quanto benevola con gl'infermi; la costellazione dell'Ofiuco rappresenta il suo mito.

Bei der Vorlage zu dieser Radierung handelt es um ein verlorenes Fresko von Francesco Salviati. - Sehr guter Abdruck mit zweizeiligem Text unter der Darstellung, mit vertikaler Mittelfalte, winzigem Rändchen um die Plattenkante und leichten Papierschäden an drei Ecken.

Churchill 386. Sehr schöner, kräftiger, klarer und gleichmässiger Druck mit dem vollen Schriftrand. Auf die Plattenkante geschnitten, unten teils mit feinem Rändchen.- Von sehr schöner Erhaltung. Von Bartsch als ?chef-? ?uvre de Jean Muller? bezeichnet und charakterisiert als ?une des plus belles que cet artiste ait gravée. On y admire l'art avec lequel ce graveur a exprimé les differentes formes, en n `y employand presque qu 'une seule taille.? Nachdem die Probezüge der beiden ersten Druckzustände sich sämtlich in den öffentlichen Sammlungen von London, Wien und Amsterdam befinden, hier der im Handel frühest erreichbare III. Etat mit der Widmung an den Amsterdamer Dichter und Kunstsammler Hendrick Spiegel, den die Darstellung erläuternden Versen sowie den Künstleradressen.
